  1. Xellence, what has changed is that Pedro will be a year farther removed from major shoulder surgery. It's too bad, because the injury also ruined his brother's career. At the same time, we won't know how much he can recover until he's had time to test it out
  2. pitchleague, it's nice as a teacher as I leave for work at 6 am and return home at about 6 pm. I miss morning and afternoon rush hour. Still, lots of idiots out here. My newest pet peeve is that when I'm 2nd in the left turn lane and the light goes green, people in AZ don't inch out into the intersection to turn. They wait behind the line, even with no red turn arrow on lights. If the light doesn't have any left-turn arrows, it means only one car might get through at the end of the light rather than 2.
  3. Here in AZ, my license is good until 2046. In other states they look at it and think it must be a mistake or forgery
  4. I was there last weekend with a field trip of 130 7th graders and had a fun time. It's a science field trip, so we hit up Scripps Aquarium and SeaWorld. Beware that it is chilly in the mornings due to the marine layer. Once it burns off, it can be nice and warm. Also, last year I got sunburnt on the field trip on a 55-degree, overcast day. So the sun can be intense there.

  7. He has one really good pitch, a sinker. He needs to work on a slider and changeup, because working in 6-11 pitch innings (remember, he statistically works VERY efficiently in the minors) he likely never gets to work on secondary pitches.
  8. Kent had fantastic hands, glovework, and instincts. Despite being one of the slowest men alive, his bat and the aforementioned skills made him a well above average 2b
  9. I'd love to add him due to his speed. In the past he has drawn some walks and played at least adequate defense. He's a better option than Gwynn. I like Duffy, but it never hurts to bring him to camp
  10. InsomniacInkRoss, Phoenix has kidnappings, but Tucson has more Mexican gang violence given its proximity to Nogales. Tucson is like 5 degrees cooler than Phoenix, so that means it's only 113 in the summer, not 118 degrees. Really, it's no different.
  11. Capuano is the most predictable pitcher I've ever seen and he's been pretty solid in the big leagues. To righties he pretty much just alternates changeup away, fastball in.
  12. Besides U of A, I haven't heard many positive things about Tucson as a hip place. It's pretty much just the University, retirees, a new working class, and immigrants. I live in the Phoenix area, and for the 5th largest metro area, it's a breeze to get around. I've always thought Prescott, AZ had a fun vibe, as it's got some snow, some warmth, and no humidity. It has been rated the top location to retire to several times in the last 10 years
  13. Did Schilling ever have surgery for the torn rotator cuff, or did he try to rehab it?
  14. Russ, don't forget College Basketball. I've long believed that if you ask people in Wisconsin what their favorite basketball team is, you'd get 1) Badgers-50% 2) Marquette-20% 3) other college team-15% 4) Bucks-15% My numbers could be way off, but I've always thought the MU following was very strong for such a mid-sized school.
  15. They discussed it on XM radio, and the player supposedly had faked his name and age. He didn't trust the family that he had claimed was his, so his signing bonus was in his biological uncle's bank account. That's why it was so difficult to track down the money. Apparently the kid was 4 years older than he had claimed when signed.
  16. lexi, congrats to Mat and his growing family. And congrats on being an aunt

  22. I also expected Dubaku to take off and disappear. I think there's something fishy with Almeda since he disappeared for about 4 episodes there.
  23. I'm a big fan of the network. Today I woke up to see Ryan's 7th no hitter. I didn't realize he thew nearly all fastballs, but it was that good (and wild) that guys couldn't lay off of it. Then they had a classic game of Yanks vs Tigers with Fidrych on the mound and Uecker as a commentator. Uecker started talking about his hitting prowess and had a good 2 minute-story that had me crying I was laughing so loudly
  24. If Koskie shows he can play, I'd love to have him back as a backup at 1b/3b in AAA to get his game back. I like Lamb, and I'm satisfied with Hall, but I just think Koskie's defense, OBP, and left-handed stick are great fits.
  25. I think the customer service aspect of teaching is a pain. For instance, if I'm a week behind on grading (due to planning, coaching, or...dare I say...having a life), I'll start getting emails as to why grades weren't entered for that week on the computer system. I think it must have been easier for teachers when there was no transparency. Grades were kept secret until midterms and finals, and parents pressured students to pull grades up. Instead, parents now email us to ask why the student got the grade they did. Don't they talk w/their kids? Still, there used to be some mystery for students and they continued to try hard. Now they can see their grade and it often means they want to give up because it seems a useless cause
