  1. good for him. Too bad he got hurt, because the old Koskie was better than all of our current 3b options
  2. My college roommate (in 1999) used to complain to his mom about his homework load. Of course he left out that he did his work in co-ed study groups that were spending 80% of the time flirting, 15% planning parties, and 5% doing work. My students today have the same problem in 7th grade due to MP3 players, cell phones (calls and texting), etc. I had a professor at Santa Clara that roamed between Santa Clara and Stanford (with some other schools like Golden Gate), depending on need (since he wasn't tenured). One time he admitted how much he preferred teaching at SCU, because the school allowed him to give any grade the student deserved. At Stanford they didn't want non-tenured teachers giving anything lower than an A, as they'd hate to have students grad school chances hanging on a grade by one of these teachers. Ridiculous if you ask me
  3. In my district I have roughly 50% of my 7th graders reading on a 3rd-4th grade level and doing math on a 3rd-4th grade level. Yet they keep getting promoted because "experts" say that we could damage them emotionally by holding them back. Some new studies are being used to implement new strategies. For instance, for a student not turning in his/her work, the student gets 50%. Personally, I'm fairly conservative, but I have decided that the US needs to implement a mandatory birth control plan for all teens. We have a ridiculously high teen birth rate, and at my school that is directly correlated with poorly parented, unmotivated students. My honors students were born when their parents were roughly 27-35, my regular students were born when parents were 14-20, and it's VERY evident in their grades, behavior, personal relationships, maturity, motivation, etc.
  4. craigharmann, As most of us MU fans felt, Crean simply couldn't coach athletes. He always tried to play disciplined, slow, grind-it-out Big Ten style with a small athletic team in an athletic league. Williams has adapted his system to meet his players. Crean's style will likely thrive in the Big Ten over time, but it appears this move has been best for all parties.
  5. Marte and Burroughs were supposed to be the studs for the next decade. Oh well.
  6. Last year Hardy seemed to embrace going to RF for the first time. Starting in about June, he started driving the ball towards the right side for the first time in his career. I was amazed at how a self-proclaimed dead-pull hitter was getting hits to RF consistently.
  7. I always liked playing both 3b and 2b, so I've never fully understood why they aren't more interchangeable. 3b requires a bit better reaction time and arm, while 2nd requires footwork (for DP's) and range. If Lawrie can handle 2b, he could probably handle 3rd. 2b might be a position for the low minors to work on his offense, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him at 3b by AA.
  8. I find it interesting that people seem impressed Fielder is a natural righty. A significant portion of MLB left-handed hitters are actually righties. On the PGA golf tour, the golfer known as "lefty" is actually a righty. There is a common theory in sports that it's better to hit opposite-handed in swinging sports, as it allows the dominant hand to lead the swing and the weak hand to roll through. Cecil was a very good fielder (no pun intended) and was very agile. His son is more bowling ball shaped. While quick, Prince is also nowhere near the defender his father was
  9. i loved that I was in Panama for the last one, and all the townspeople came out to the bars to watch and drink. They were cussing at the TV, expecting Panama to crush all opponents
  10. mlbtraderumors mentions that if Izzy doesn't return to the Cards on a minor league deal, the Brewers are among the teams known to have an interest in him.
  11. Patrick or Toby, I thought there was a signing deadline now. If the deadline was mid-August, how could he have signed this weekend?
  12. I'd like to see Rottino tried at 3rd, 2nd, and C this spring. With Salome in AAA, I'd like Vinny to work on being a 25th man. I think he could have lots of value by being at least competent at multiple positions.
  13. So how crazy...9 people at least temporarily holding the office of president in a 13 year span!
  14. Peavey, they claim that in season 1 there is a pres, then Palmer, then Palmer cedes power to a VP temporarily, then the guy in Air Force One, Logan, Logan's VP takes over, Palmer II, Palmer II's VP (Noah something), and Taylor. That's 9. I didn't see any seasons up until Logan, but each president listed on wikipedia has been mentioned in this thread EXCEPT for the VP that takes over for Logan (well, I mentioned it earlier, but others didn't).
  15. wikipedia says there have been 9 presidents serving a total of 4+ terms (Taylor is the 5th 4-year term on the show).
  16. Don't forget, Logan was arrested, with his sneaky VP taking over. so that's 8 presidents
  17. I'm just curious, but how many presidents has Jack served under? This is my third season, and it's now the 5th president in those 3 days. I know of the first Palmer, too. So Jack has served under at least 6 presidents. Doing some simple math, even if Palmer was at the end of his term(s), then followed by Logan and his VP for 4 years, followed by Palmer/creepy VP for 4 more, and now at the start of Taylor's term, that's a minimum of 10 years over which all these things happen.
  18. You mean like how Mario Williams went before Reggie Bush? This happens in all sports' drafts.

  20. Ryan Howard demanded a trade as a minor leaguer because the Phillies went out of their way to block him in Philly. Frankly, there's a reason top talents normally don't hit 40 homers a year in AAA--they get called up! It would be like if we had Prince in AAA and then went out and signed Teixeira for 6 years. That's what the Phillies did with Thome
  21. I hope that one day Prince can be the player that Howard is. But after knowing Howard, there's no chip on his shoulder. He's just a fun guy out doing what he enjoys. Prince needs to learn that, along with how to lose weight. Howard's much taller than Prince and built much more muscularly. He's also much more athletic.
  22. Bush's pitching numbers were pretty good until he blew out his elbow. I'd consider bringing him in for a tryout
