  1. just got back. A decent Brewers contingent there. I sat infront of Jim Powell and his family for the first few innings, so I couldn't stop laughing at how I was at a game, yet was hearing his voice still. Fielder now makes me 6 for 6 in 2005 and 2006 spring training games. That's right, he's homered in all 6 I've been to. Hall with two great hustling triples. Koskie should have hit one. His deep drive came up a foot short of clearing the fence. Then I looked and he was barely at 1st. It's 430 to center, so I guess he thought he hit it out, but at least he still got to second. Still, should have been a triple. The Hurricane with a nice slashing liner that required a diving catch from I think Mark Sweeney. If he misses it, it's a triple. He's a lot skinnier than I thought he would be. I expected him to look more like Belliard. Nelson Cruz and Fielder absolutely crushed their homers. Both over the 430 part of the park. And Gross looks very good in the field. He was battling a tough sun, and yet he made the plays effortlessly. He also runs better than I expected. That means he's matched the total number of games (spring training and reg. season) that I've seen where Magruder played well defensively, and it's after watching Gross once
  2. off to the game...I look forward to seeing Gross in CF, and Cirillo at 2b.
  3. we need to find out if for the tv games, Sommerfeld needs a broadcast partner...wink wink
  4. square, I was wondering if there have been any reductions in costs to you in the last year. It seemed that we were placing a bit of a burden on ou, and then in the last year a lot of us realized this, and paid our share for the message boards. I was just really wondering if it has made a dramatic change in cost of the boards
  5. just was curious what happened to Don. Was something said to him? He wasn't removed, was he? I haven't seen any posts by him since the backlash at his comments, and I haven't seen his username as being logged in

  7. along the same lines of what 1992casey said, I'd like to be able to omit some people. Like if someone is making posts I don't like (ie, wasting my time), I'd like to be able to click a box by their username which prevents their posts from showing up. Then I can waste my time reading all the other posts I enjoy reading
  8. I just figured since you do a lot of writing here and for the other site, it couldn't hurt to point out the difference in name. Some people will see mistakes like that as a lack of time put into researching, and completely ignore how much detail you provide.
  9. colby, for reference, it is Santa Clara University, formerly University of Santa Clara (before Southern Cal bought the rights to USC from Santa Clara), not UC-Santa Clara. feel free to delete this post. This is the same school that produced Joey Gomes (minor leaguer for the DRays), Randy Winn, Steve Nash, Kurt Rambis, Brandy Chastain, Brent Jones, etc.
  10. thanks Colby. Anyone who jumps out at us like Dana Eveland or Manny Parra did? Do you see any of these guys likely commanding 7 figures?
  11. Rushford was one of the guys I really latched onto a while ago. I think we're all rooting for him.
  12. without knowing the facts about this guy, it would seem "soft-body" for a catcher means the guy doesn't have a 6-pack, or just looks like an average guy. He's not a physical specimen. I've been around Jeremy Brown, and heard that. And my favorite was A's catcher Kurt Suzuki looking at Prince taking fielding drills. He turned to me, and said "you think he's big and fat, you oughta see Landon Powell. Man he makes Prince look small." I'm not so sure I want to see a 270 lb catcher. I might not want to eat for a month
  13. the closest I came was seeing the daily lists of players currently on the different types of waivers during spring training last year.
  14. Colby, I think the Dbacks did make a strong effort to upgrade their pitching, as they took what, 4 or 5 college hard throwers in the next 2-3 rounds. Several should hit AA this year, and if 1 or 2 can pan out, it'll go down as a great draft
  15. Nance nearly hung it up after parting ways w/the Dbacks last spring training...good for the little guy (by little, I'd guess 5'4", 5'7" tops)
  16. It'd be awefully interesting, but suppose: -Davis has another solid year of 10-15 wins, ERA of 4.20 or lower, 200+ IP -Lee goes out, hits .285+ with 35 homers and 120 rbi -Hendrickson, Sarfate, Evelend, Gallardo, Rogers, Dillard, Wahpepah, etc have solid-to-good campaigns -Hart hits .275 with 15 homers in 350 at bats as a supersub -Cruz hits .290+ with 25+ homers in AAA. -Brewers are in contention until September They can't get fair value for their potential free agents at this point (assuming Davis can be a free agent). So do they make a strong push to resign Davis and Lee, know that they'll command around $7-8 and $8-10 million, respectively? At the same time, they could let them walk and find themselves with at least 1 first rounder, 2 supplemental picks, a second rounder, and then 2 1st/2nd rounders. For the Crew, that could mean they could go a number of ways. They could find a bunch of Will Inman types, and buy them out of going to college. They could take a college reliever. They could simply take the best player available. Or it's even arguable that they could do a number of things, including taking some best athletes and some best players.
  17. thanks brewers19, just saw myself in the fall league final game one, and now looking at Inman
  18. gave it a try (wanted to see if I'm present in his fall league wrap-up bit, as I was wandering the field). But unfortunately I have no programs capable of playing that file format
  19. anyone know how Thompson fared against lefties? He had some good rates in the minors last year, and I was wondering if there was a chance the Crew might have brought him in to have a chance to compete for a bullpen spot
  20. congrats Brian. I think the Branyan cease-fire could really help calm down the site a bit. And to the person who said the Ginter arguments were fiercer, I cannot agree. I'm pretty sure we all liked Ginter. Some felt he was a starter. Some felt his potential was rotting away on the bench. Some felt he was solid as a PH/super-sub. But the Branyan issue is much more volatile. I mean, people are being foolish enough to call out others who said he'd be cut. Gee, the Journal Sentinal, mlb.com, and other sources all said he was unlikely to be tendered a contract. I'll admit I expected (and stated so) him to be cut, but due to a numbers issue rather than a talent issue. Perhaps we need another "I told you so" thread, as I think it was kind of therapeutic last June or so.
  21. welcome to the fold
  22. Thompson had a pretty good strikeout rate and ERA last year, his first in several years. Who knows, he could have a Jaret Wright-like return from the dead. Ryan Anderson, Neugy, and Gold can also hope for something like this
  23. SoCal, if that's the case, then we should just let Helling, Eveland, or Hendrickson man the 5th spot and not pursue a free agent.
  24. on Stephen Drew (from the top 20 list): He plays without much outward enthusiasm, leading some scouts to express concern about his competitive drive In the fall league, most prospects walk around as if they think they're "big league." Stephen Drew started out quietly, and by mid-way through the season emerged as the lone player that truly carried himself like a big leaguer. It's funny that scouts question his "outward enthusiasm", because he was the only one on the team willing to call someone out for not trying, not caring, or not playing the game the proper way. He's going to be a star. His career path could be like Yount's...SS for a while, then OF. He'll hit like his brother, too.
  25. For instance, we always heard that Ben Hendrickson threw in the low-90s with the ability to touch the mid-90s on occasion, but when he was called up, he seemed to pitch in the 88 mph range. Did anyone ever actually witness him throwing as hard as 91-94 on a reliable radar gun? My initial reports on Hendrickson were in the '03 Fall League. I noted that his velocity wasn't eye-popping, but I couldn't figure out why the Fall League's top hitters couldn't touch him. Specifically, he threw a lot of fastballs over the plate, thigh high. Were they on the black of the plate? Did they move a lot? I don't know, but the top hitters in the minors repeatedly hit weak rollers, bleeders, and broken bat groundouts off of him. Nothing was hit hard. So there was something he was doing, be it location, velocity, pitch selection, or movement. Another unique example is that one of our Fall League trainers is from the Braves system, and asked me what I thought of Capellan. I said that I liked what I saw of his mechanics, however, it was odd that this hard thrower was throwing only 91-92. He was shocked, saying that he rarely dropped as low as 94 last year on their guns, averaging 97-98 in each outing...that's right, averaging. As for Rottino, I think his point was that he caught a lot early on, and rarely if ever after that (he said 20-something games). He felt it was because he was needed at other positions since they had two other competent catchers moreso than the Brewers deciding he couldn't catch.
