  1. what's tough for me is that I love the minors, but it's amazing how quickly I forgot where these guys came from (college, hs, juco). But it seems like this year's draft and DFE signings are beginning with an explosion not seen in recent memory. What was the Belcher year, '00? I think that's the last time I was this pumped about draftee performance
  2. So I'm trying to look at Ben's stats. I see a few trends, but nothing major. I know the PCL is a very offensive league. Ben's 4.72 ERA is only 18th. His numbers compare very similarly to the highly touted Adam Wainwright. His home ERA is 5.50, whip 1.47, and GO:FO 1.56, allowing 10 homers His road ERA is 3.71, whip is 1.40, and GO:FO is 1.92, allowing 5 homers. Is Nashville an offensive park? I thought they were all the western parks like Tucson, Colorado Springs, Sacramento, Fresno, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Oklahoma, etc. It would figure that he'd have similar GO:FO in both splits, but what could explain the difference? Is the Nashville infield hard as a rock? Sure the team has made a ton of errors in the IF (58, not counting Weeks and Fielder, whom I can't find). And we all know that if there's 10 bad bounces, a fair share will be hits while the rest are errors. IE, by not "punishing" the fielder for a bad bounce, we punish the pitcher. So those in Nashville, is the infield difficult to play on? Are there lots of tough bounces? I ask, because a sinkerballer named Brandon Webb carried horrible AAA stats, in part because the bounces were so bad in Tucson that if a routine ball gets by/over someone, how can you punish the fielder? The result skews the pitcher's hits and runs stats, and it leads to longer innings, likely resulting in more homers, more true hits, and more walks.
  3. Ben has the sinker working so far against a very solid lineup, and a 1st place club at that
  4. bjamesw22, that statement is motivating me to look at his numbers. He's had a fine year for someone re-inventing himself.
  5. Many of us would have him in that #5 role in '06, working with the big league staff. What have we seen of Dave? We've seen that for 2-3 weeks at a time he can be an impact player on offense and defense, then he slides into these deep funks. We were singing his praises before he came to Milwaukee just as we did back in his 1st half of '03 in AA. I tend to think that not all players benefit the same way from playing every day in the minors. For instance, every minor leaguer was a starter in little league, HS, and some in college/JuCo. Where do the smart players in sports usually play? the bench. They're the ones with less talent, but who know how to maximize their value to the team. They play within their means. Having David as a 5th OF would likely be an upgrade over Magruder both offensively and defensively. But will he learn more playing every day in AAA than on the bench in Milwaukee? Throw in that we've got a series of CF's (Gwynn, Moss, Lewis) who are deserving of a move up, and Ford, Chapman, and Fermaint all penciled in for the A-ball squads, and we have tons of talent there. Also, David stealing bases at a much higher rate this year.
  6. yeah, Stanford is on quarters. Santa Clara (my former school) is quarters. Really, much of the west, including Cal schools, is quarters. At the same time, it's almost unheard of in the midwest. Sept 29th is awefully late. We started around Sept 17-19 .
  7. very nice Colby. I really appreciate the review. How about a DFE review?
  8. Don't wanna jinx my boy, but Krynzel appears to be doing his typical Jenkins/Jekyll and Hyde.
  9. Murray now has the chance to follow Heether and go from non-prospect unable to hit, TO pseudo prospect with intriguing tools
  10. So who was the last Brewer to hit a HR in his first ML at-bat? no idea if any have. as his first hit, I'm pretty sure it was Jenkins. Wasn't it in SF?
  11. wow, that was terrible by Hall. What a bad secondary lead
  12. Hart got out...must have been his elbow being so low (sarcasm)
  13. But how do you identify it and how do you correlate it's existence with winning? Baseball is for the most part an individual sport, football isn't If that were true, then the A's would have been far less successful this past 5 seasons. I went into the Fall League last year expecting a bunch of jerks. I figured the A's took only high performance studs, not phyical specimens, so these guys--the OBP college studs--would be a bunch of wild punks. In reality, they were all very polite. Several were southerners who responded to questions with "yes, sir" or "I'm just happy to be playing pro ball." The A's make it a point of drafting high character players, and it seems as though the Brewers value character quite a bit. Character is important, because you have to live with them each day for 8 months. There's a reason that Luis Terrero is disliked on the Diamondbacks, Curt Schilling is disliked wherever he goes, and other stars--like Bonds, Pedro, etc-- get lukewarm comments from teammates.
  14. I'm thinking more and more than the Crew should trade Lee this off season and give LF to Hart. depends. Reports from the organization say Lee is VERY happy in Milwaukee. It's the tough tradeoff. Jenkins is a career Brewer, known for his streaks. Lee is younger, has more power, and much more consistent. Jenkins walks more, but also strikes out more. And Lee seems to be healthier. I think Hart's best role next year is as a bench player, getting about 3 starts a week. Heck, this could even be an audition for the CF job for next year, which would make Krynzel the 4th OF if Clark is dealt. Pretty exciting being able to speculate about big leaguers, not kids in A ball
  15. ...someone was looking ahead to CO, and I have to say that visiting Coors could help get the offense going
  16. just to flash back to my spring training observations, I said Capellan reminds me of Bartolo Colon in terms of his mechanics, how he uses his legs, and how he effortlessly throws hard.
  17. wow, Hart killed that one. Strange, his elbow seems low, not high. So much for that theory...
  18. wow, that pitch almost landed short of the plate, and Helms drove it all the way to the wall in Right Center. That's Vlads-like
  19. now Weeks doing his best to manufacture a run. Nice job by Hall hitting it to the OF, too
  20. now Weeks trying to pad my SB stats in roto leagues
  21. peavey, it's no surprise. When I saw him in spring training, I came on here and said he has CF speed, just is terrible at judging flyballs. If he's made strides with tracking balls and getting jumps, he could play a CF in the mold of Brady Clark (ie, avg at best)
  22. minor league field conditions are usually very poor. In Tucson, it was a joke when Brandon Webb (extreme GB pitcher) was there. Several times a game there were bad hops. This led to both increased errors and increased hit totals. The result is good infielders made 30+ errors and Webb had a high ERA
  23. Morris? He owns us. Let's hope Santos has one of his good games
  24. nice outing by Inman. I'm converted to his church, where we worship every 5th day. So is he having the best debut by a HS pitcher since Wilhelmsen?
