  1. This is from Perfect Game's CA overview. They had him as #67 prospect in the state: 67. DANNY KELLER, rhp, Newbury Park HS Long limbs/long arm action at projectable 6-5/185; 88-93 mph FB, flashes good CU spin, raw mechanics.
  2. If you're talking about Alex Dickerson, he's gone.
  3. I find it interesting that the Brewers have fixated on taller pitchers, yet they tend to draft outfielders on the shorter side. I understand there is a durability issue for pitchers that doesn't exist for position players. But it still seems out of whack to value body type so much for one type of player and not another.
  4. Michael Reed. That's more exciting. Not an easy sign. BA's #160. Here's the scouting report: Reed has created mixed opinions among Texas area scouts this spring. Those who buy into his strong 6-foot, 210-pound body and tools think he could fit in the second or third rounds, while others who worry about his lack of polish see him as more of a sixth- to 10th-rounder. His proponents think he profiles nicely as a right fielder who swings the bat with authority from the right side of the plate and backs up his raw power with plus speed and arm strength. Others think he has a mature, maxed-out frame and does everything with a lot of effort, and that he's a fringe to average runner. Reed also pitches, reaching 90 mph with his fastball, and he'll see action as a two-way player if he attends Mississippi. It may take second-round money to sign him away from Ole Miss, for whom his father Benton played football en route to a brief NFL career.
  5. Not to rekindle some of the earlier debates, but when there's grumbling about low-ceiling college players this pick is where my complaints lie. I don't have any problems with the pitchers we took, but what does Ramirez bring to the system that we don't already have with Gamel, Halton, Morris and Hawn? Especially after taking Morris and Hawn last year. I hope this isn't a trend where we burn a 4th or 5th rounder every year on a college 1b with AAAA written all over him. Sorry for the negativity.
  6. Piliere's comment: "Ramirez didn't bring his power with him to wood, so not sure I buy into him long term. I might have tried him on the mound."
  7. This is my least favorite pick so far. #197 on BA's board. Here's the report: Multiple scouts used the phrase "a really tough one" when evaluating Ramirez this spring. He's had a tremendous college career, starring for three seasons as the primary power threat in the heart of Cal State Fullerton's order as well as the team's closer. Some scouts prefer him as a pitcher. He has good feel for a solid four-pitch mix, including an 86-90 fastball, a plus changeup, a solid slider and curveball. But Ramirez wants to be a hitter, and the majority of scouts prefer him as a first baseman. After his monstrous sophomore season, Ramirez struggled to adjust to wood bats last summer with Team USA, causing some scouts to wonder if his lefthanded swing is more tailored to metal bats. He has undeniable strength in his bulky 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame, leading to above-average raw power but average game power. He does not have elite bat speed, and he sometimes exhibits an arm bar in his swing, making him vulnerable on the inner half. He uses his hands well and excels at lacing hard line drives into the left-center gap, and he has a chance to be an average hitter. Most of his home run power is to center-right, and he's gotten better at turning on balls. He's an average defender at first base, with soft hands but limited range. Ramirez could be drafted anywhere from the fourth to the 10th round.
  8. For high school bats, we've talked about Matt Dean and Derek Fisher, both of whom I believe to still be available. Both are probably tough signs at this point. Others still out there: Senquez Golson who is a speedy CF type and Ben Roberts who is Montana's version of Brandon Nimmo. Both would make me happy.
  9. Gagnon was #70 on BA's board, #69 for Perfect Game. Probably good value where we got him.
  10. Piliere just said this in his chat "Really like Gagnon. Good stuff, low 90s w/ pitchability. Very good in the Cape"
  11. Another college mid-rotation starter type.
  12. Barron, Dean, Derek Fisher and Johnny Eierman still on the board. Fisher will be tough to sign.
  13. Thomore was one of my favorites. Would have been nice to see him last until round 3. Still, I've got no objections to Lopez pick. Great to see the Brewers get an upside guy to balance against the two college guys yesterday.
  14. BA's 39th overall prospect here's the scouting report on Jorge Lopez:
  15. Jorge Lopez. Well, for those who want young pitchers with upside here you go.
  16. I liked Vogelbach. Kind of Prince-like. Overlooked because he's short and round but just kills the ball. That's too bad.
  17. Meo and Esposito now gone. Boy did the Diamondbacks do a nice job of adding arms.
  18. Wow. Pirates take Bell. They just don't hold back at all anymore.
  19. You mean Barron? Yeah, I really like Barron, Dean and pretty much all of the high school outfielders listed (including Johnny Eierman and Ben Roberts who I forgot). Also, here's the link to perfect game's top 331 players for a good quick reference beyond the guys I put up. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5838
  20. As for pitchers, it's quickest to break it down by college and high school: CollegeAnthony MeoJosh OsichErik JohnsonAndrew GagnonJack ArmstrongLenny LinskyBurch SmithAdam ConleyLogan VerretNoe RamirezCarter Capps High SchoolBryan BrickhouseDillon MaplesCody KukukMason HopeDillon PetersJorge LopezJake ReedAdrian HouserHawtin BuchananKody WattsCole WiperClay Holmes
  21. There's probably 3 clear first-round talents who are still available because of huge bonus demands: Josh Bell, Derek Norris and Dillon Howard. I can't see the Brewers taking one of them. There is a lot of talent still available. A quick run-down on some of the position player possibilities for rounds 2-3: 1bNicky Delmonico, HS (some think he can catch)Alex Dickerson, IndianaDan Vogelbach, HSAaron Westlake, VanderbiltRicky Oropesa, USCCody Asche, NebraskaRookie Davis, HS 2bBrad Miller, ClemsonRyan Wright, LouisvilleChristian Lopes, HS SSConnor Barron, HSBrandon Loy, TexasJulius Gaines, HSPhillip Evans, HSTyler Green, HS 3bMatt Dean, HS B. A. Vollmuth, Southern MissJason Esposito, Vanderbilt OFDerek Fisher, HS (probably a tough sign)Kyle Gaedele, ValpraisoCharles Tilson, HSGranden Goetzman, HSCarl Thomore, HSSenquez Golson, HSJake Cave, HSJason Coats, Texas Christian
  22. Forgot about Loy. I've had him in mind the past few weeks as a backup plan if we didn't get Lindor. I probably wouldn't want to take him before round 3, but after that I think he'd be a good pickup.
  23. Agreed. Who do you like for round 2? Trevor Story? Is Kyle Winkler still available? Ryan Wright? I don't know which high schoolers actually project to stay at short but Julius Gaines is still available. I really like Carl Thomore, HS, OF from New Jersey. Charlie Tilson might be a possibility. Also Matt Dean, HS, 3b sounds promising. As far as high school arms I like what I've read about Cody Kukuk and Cole Wiper. Kyle Winkler left a regional game this weekend after 12 pitches clutching his arm. He might now be a guy you take a flyer on real late.
  24. Phillies take Larry Greene in Supp round. I assume he would've been in consideration for Brewers' 2nd round pick. I didn't love him, so I'm not disappointed.
  25. If anyone wants to see a glowing scouting report on Jed Bradley: http://baseballbeginnings...03/22/jed-bradley-report
