  1. I'd be happy with adding one or two more then next few innings and cruising to an easy 5-1 or 6-2 victory. It's been awhile since a game like that.
  2. Wow. Great PA by Narvaez. Can't believe he laid off the 2-2 change. That's going to be the difference tween a no-hitter and not. and might actually cost them the game.
  3. After this 3 game series vs. the Twins the Crew has 11 straight against the Pirates and Reds. An 8-6 record in this stretch would be good and anything less than 6-8 would be bad. Regardless, it will all come down to the last 2 weeks of September. 10 games against the Cardinals (3 doubleheaders) and 3 each against the Reds and Royals. That's 16 games in 14 days. Should be wild.
  4. I'm surprised Hader was only HM last year...although his value is elevated at the trade deadline when top teams are/were looking for relief help to put them over the top in October. On a pure "franchise building" type of trade value HM was probably about right. Still, there is no way that Urias has more trade value than Hader right now. So, I'd expect that Hader, Yelich and Woodruff might make the list pretty soon. I think a case could have been made for Houser/Burnes/Peralta in HM as well, but understand why they would be left off.
  5. For as poorly as the team has hit overall there have been a couple bright spots: Arcia, Urias and to a lesser extent Mathias have all looked pretty decent. I'd rather have those guys hitting well than guys like Gyorko and Holt and Sogard, who have no value to the franchise beyond October of this year. Regardless, the strength of this team is its pitching. It's easily the deepest group of arms the Brewers have had since... well, as long as I can remember. They haven't quite pitched up to their potential yet, but the signs are there.
  6. MLB.com has a front page article about 7 under-the-radar acquisitions that have made a big difference for their teams this year. Jesus Aguilar and Trent Grisham are among the 7. Considering the sheer number of under-the-radar moves that Stearns made last offseason he should get a couple hits eventually but so far he's pretty much come up Ofer. I don't think the season will end that way, but the first 3 weeks haven't been good to say the least.
  7. Good post Eye Black/Breen. The only truly BAD thing a GM can do is make terrible long term FA signings and trade away prospects who turn into all-stars. Evaluate Stearns on his signings of Cain, Yelich and Garcia, and his trading away of Dubon, Grisham, Harrison, Diaz, Brinson and Yamomoto (Although getting Yelich is a move that quite obviously is a HUGE win for Stearns in a way that should cover many, many of his misfires) GMs can also to GOOD things by finding diamonds in the rough. Stearns has almost done this but not quite with guys like Shaw, Aguilar, Thames and the host of short term guys we've cycled through the last few years (Pomeranz, Jordan Lyles, Moose, Grandal) Signing low risk veterans on short contracts to fill out the roster (Smoak, Sogard, Holt, Gyorko, Lindblom, Phelps) is just something that had to happen but shouldn't really be judged one way or the other. They are inconsequential moves as far as the "direction of the franchise" is concerned.
  8. No. 19 games is a next to meaningless sample with very little predictve value. While it might be about a third of this pandemic season, it is still less than 12% of an actual season. Before he got hired by the Rays, Jeff Sullivan wrote an article at FanGraphs examining which of actual 1st half results, pythag 1st half results or projected 2nd half results did the best job of predicting actual 2nd half results. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/how-best-to-predict-the-seasons-second-half/ Even after 80 games (4x more than we've played) the projected 2nd half results still did a better job of predicting the actual 2nd half results than either of 1st half actual or pythag results. Yep. Basically we may or may not be a good team, but that doesn't mean we can't win the World Series this year.
  9. Phelps is ready to go if need be but I think Hader starts out anyway.
  10. Every prospect website and publication has our system at or very near the bottom of the league. Usually means very little. It means nothing when we're last and everything when we're first!
  11. Yup, that’s the problem I haven’t seen mentioned. Even when they start playing that’s great, but they would still have a month and a half of baseball to play. Any kind of outbreak, even tiny, would make their entire season a disaster and put in doubt even playing 50 games. They better all just make their own bubble. There has to be some kind of cutoff. Or else just play games with the b team that has 0 contact with anybody from the A team positives.
  12. I never understood why we hired him. I'm firmly of the opinion that one should never hire a "good" hitting coach with a great reputation. That way when the bats go cold for the whole team at once it makes it really easy fix to just fire the hitting coach. In some sense all baseball coaches are hired to be fired, but that might actually the case for a hitting coach.
  13. I would argue that the roster was built more for NOT having the DH. With the versatility of our bench and the number of quality middle inning relievers we have we were going to be double switching and minimizing ABs by our pitchers more than other clubs in the NL.
  14. I completely agree. Throw in Urias as well to Narvaez and Garcia. The rest of the veteran pickups were pure stop gap players, but those 3 have a future with the club and Stearns needs to hit on 2 of them for the long term.
  15. Same thought here. It's not like AAA players are random scrubs off the street, they can still field a competitive team on a nightly basis. Probbly not for an entire YEAR, but filling in for a couple games here and there so that the league can play an even schedule makes more sense than cancelling or postponing indefinitely. Presumably there is a coaching staff at these alternate sites as well. it's baseball, they barely need coaches anyway.
  16. No more cross country road trips means fewer day games. Although fewer off days should mean that the players should get more getaway day games even if they aren't traveling far. I guess ratings are more important.
  17. The can win every game until the playoffs as far as I'm concerned. Then lose a couple.
