  1. I guess they couldn't find a trade partner at that price? Seems like we could have gotten another Spanberger like return and still saved the cash...
  2. Why are pinch hitters crappy? Generally it's a guy who is quite good if the L/R matchup works out, and R/R matchups are usually okay too.
  3. ONLY for the starting pitcher in both leagues. Take him out, and you lose the DH (who can still stay in the game by playing the field) This is getting away from the point of the thread, though. There is a long and interesting thread about proposals and ideas to improve the game and blah blah blah which can be bumped at any time but I'm looking for actual changes in this thread.
  4. Many proposals and recommendations have been bandied about in the least couple of years with 2020 being the target year for implementation, but I've heard conflicting reports on what is or has actually been approved. This is a necessary thing to nail down before the hot stove season so GMs can make a plan and build their rosters accordingly. -26 man rosters? -September call-up roster limits? -defined "pitcher" and "position player" roles and capped roster spots for pitchers? -3 batter/end of an inning minimum for relievers? -anything else I'm missing? Just looking to know what has actually been confirmed for next year, or what the timeline is for these changes.
  5. Pomeranz is a free agent and Knebel is coming off a major arm injury. Seems like a bad/dangerous plan to me. Hader is cheap and effective. A couple of years from now? Totally on board with trading him. But trading from a position of weakness to address another weakness doesn’t make sense to me. Hader IS cheap and effective, that's what makes him a valuable trade chip. The bullpen is by far the strength of the team. We have a good OF as well. Having a strong and deep position player group and starting pitching is more important/fundamental than having a closer. A back end bullpen of Knebel, Black, Peralta, D Williams, Burnes and Pomeranz (if signed) has a very high ceiling/potential if not a long track record of reliability. There aren't many "reliable" relievers (including Hader...heck even Kimbrel as we saw this year). I'm afraid of signing a few expensive veteran FAs to fill holes and have them flop, and have Hader becoming less effective and more expensive (thus losing trade value). With the farm system we currently have we could get stuck in a very bad place very quickly and for many years on end forcing us to trade Woodruff, Yelich, Hiura and completely start over. I think we can re-stock right now and put ourself in a decent position to win NOW with Braun and Cain still around AND build around Yelich, Hiura, Woodruff, +(whoever we get from a Hader trade) to win throughout the 2020s.
  6. Subero did more than just coach 1st base. Having an assistant fluent in Spanish is a plus too. I didn't know that Subero was Venezuelan too...So all of our tenured latino players (Arcia, Pina, Guerra, Perez, and Aguilar, anyway) and a coach were Venezuelan. Aguilar is already gone, Perez has been DFA'd once, Guerra is turning 35 and Arcia may be non-tendered. I'd feel bad for Pina if they were all close and he is the only one retained, but that's pro-sports.
  7. I'm of the opinion that: A. Relievers are more volatile than other players B. Elite relievers have more value to excellent teams than good teams, to good teams than mediocre teams, and to mediocre teams than to bad teams C. The Brewers w/o Grandal and Moustakas are a mediocre team (with a poor farm system). If we can get a C, 3B, SS, and right-handed 1B man/slugger then it makes sense to hold on to Hader. If not, it certainly makes sense to trade Hader--especially if we can fill some of those holes I listed with good, young, cheap players.
  8. Hiura, Grisham, Woodruff, and Yelich have trade value too, but that's pretty much it...even including minor leaguers...which is kind of sad. I think Grish and Woodruff are actually better than whatever their trade value is thought to be, and they are already young and controllable- so it'd be dumb to trade them. I don't think they could get proper value for Yelich either I would be willing to move Hiura unless they are positive the DH is coming in 2021 (or maybe 2022), or if they are completely sold that he'll improve his D. Hader just seems like a sell high guy to me, and we need young position players, so if you find a team willing to move a few of them I think now is the time to do it.
  9. Of course he had to stick with him once he was in. That's why he shouldn't have come in in the first place, especially with a right handed heavy bottom of the order coming up. Either leave a dealing Pomeranz in or go to Peralta/Guerra for at the very least the first couple of batter in the 8th and then see what to do from there . I'm not foaming at the mouth at CCs decision though. He's been right much more often than not this year--and it wasn't a completely boneheaded move. It's just one I wouldn't have made.
  10. Except both teams have to agree for a trade to occur. With the weak FA class, and many other holes to fill with a crap farm system, hopefully they are able to save some $ yet still upgrade. Iglesias and Mercer are 2 options Of course. I'm just on a message board and coming up with hypotheticals. The A's are an historically cheap ballclub and Semien is on his last last arby year. The trade value website thingy has his surplus value in the low 30s, same as Sean Murphy. Hader is in the mid 60s. Neuse has no where to play with Chapman and Olson still in their pre-arby years. He's a mediocre prospect who has put up good numbers, has a trade surplus value in single digits similar to a Grisham or maybe Corey Ray. So at least the numbers work out for a Hader+Ray?+Arcia? for Semien, Murphy and Neuse.
  11. I wanted somebody else to start the 8th. If you bring somebody else in (or leave Pomeranz in) and they scuffle for a bit, you still have Hader to bring in the game. If you start the 8th with Hader and he scuffles a bit...you pretty much have to leave him in and let him wriggle out of it or blow it--and even if he wriggles out of it, you have a difficult decision of leaving him out there in the 9th with a high pitch count. We had other options.
  12. We don't have the prospect capital to make a Yelich type deal, but I get where you are coming from. We need to look for the Shaw's and Aguilar's of the world. Prospects/1st/2nd year players who are blocked/bottlenecked at a position on any team (Shelden Neuse?, Nick Gordon?) . Also look for veteran guys at the end of their arbitration time/contracts who we can pick up for okay prospects (Marcus Semien?). EDIT:If we make Hiura/Hader/Grisham available then we might be able to make a bigger splash. I'd be okay trading Hader or Hiura for the right deal. I'm probably higher on Grisham (relative to his perceived trade value) than others though.
  13. I think they gotta move Hader this offseason. We've got a lot of holes to fill and his value probably peaked this past July...I could see his career blowing up real quick similar to a lot of other relievers. Still, he's the most dominant reliever in the game right now even with all the long balls.
  14. I'd trade for Marcus Semien. A's should probably sell him this offseason. Trade Hader for Semien, Sean Murphy, Shelden Neuse, and James Kaprelian. Throw in some throw ins if the A's want them.
  15. I think they gotta go for it for one more year--just don't make any long term FA signings. Stearns and co. seem to have a great eye for diamonds in the rough (Lyles, Pomeranz, Miley, etc.)--load up on as many guys as you can in Spring Training and just work it out from there. Basically a repeat strategy of this year and hope for better injury luck and fewer guys falling off a cliff. The Grandal/Moose question is a huge one though...
  16. Let Woody throw to Rendon then let Claudio finish the inning if it's clean, then PH for Claudio in the 5th. If Rendon gets on go to Suter.

  18. This is ridiculous. When the tying run scored in the bottom of the 9th I was hoping CC would IBB the next two guys and let em hit the showers/bus/airport. Or there would be a mysterious passed ball. Just stupid.
  19. Wow. That was atrocious. I guess he thought the C was going to turn the other way, but it wouldn't have mattered if he just runs through the plate w/o even sliding.
  20. I've heard that if we tie the Cards and lose game 163 we will host the Nationals even if they have a better record. No, I don't believe that's correct. We can tie the Cards and if the Nats have a better record, they are still WC1. It's just that game 163 will have no bearing on WC standings. Thanks for the correction. There was a tweet from McCalvy this week that I misread, not seeing the "tied" part with the Nats.

  22. Wow.....Hiura actually made a play. Too bad it's 7 runs too late...
