  1. I wonder what popped out to them about him. At first glance his stuff doesn't seem all that inspiring, but there's gotta be more to it than "Ethan Small did well so let's take someone similar."
  2. I didn't mean under slot, but I don't think he'd be asking for considerably over slot either.
  3. I'm curious as to what end if that's the case. I don't think Frelick nor Black would have huge demands (although they wouldn't be that underslot either), so that would be 3 straight picks where we wouldn't exactly be ponying up that much. So either we're really looking for someone to fall from rounds 3 onward or we just have a type and that's polished college hitters and Ethan Small clones lmao
  4. You'd think that after taking two polished college guys who wouldn't command hefty bonuses would allow us to take a risk in the 2nd round, but here we are taking Ethan Small 2.0. Color me a little confused
  5. Russell Smith for the second round pick. Now THERE'S our Ethan Small of the draft
  6. I was wondering why we went with Black instead of Stovall
  7. Damn, I was hoping that Solometo would fall to us but the Pirates nab him. Can't say for sure if we would've taken him even if he were available, but a guy can dream.
  8. You mean like Jacob Gatewood, Monte Harrison, Corey Ray swing for the fences? I was fine with both Gatewood and Harrison. When you swing for the fences sometimes you miss but when it works out you have a star on your hands. Or we take Montgomery, he fizzles out in A+, and then 3 years from now you whine about how our FO sucks at addressing corner IF.
  9. There was a time when I thought Stetson Allie had the potential to become the next Nolan Ryan or at the very least the next fireballing ace. Just goes to show how much I know
  10. You could honestly say the same about a guy with power but questionable hit tool. Power is worthless if a guy can't hit enough to make much use of it. Just ask Hiura. The difference is Frelick doesn't have questionable power, he literally doesn't have any power. His batting style doesn't really allow for there to be any future potential either. We will see how his bat translates to pro ball and the MLB. Maybe he can rack up some doubles down the road to have a good slugging percentage. We will also see how his speed translates to base stealing at the next level, another big part of how good he could be. I don't hate the pick, but I can certainly see why someone would be disappointed we took a 'low ceiling' guy in the Top 15 and being our first pick. I don't get too hung up who we draft because its easy to be a pessimist when most fail and many of the others get traded before they ever debut with us. I will start caring more a few years from now when he is valuable trade bait or close to the MLB level. I have found that freaking out good or bad is almost always comical in the end. The most impactful draft picks seem to more often be guys no one cares about one way or the other because they weren't drafted in the first round. The people everyone hypes up and wanted become absolutely nothing. The scouting reports in retrospect are usually about as accurate as a mock drafts are .Of the guys we draft this year 9/10 probably A) Suck or B) Never actually play for us. This ain't the NBA/NFL where they might help us win the championship next year. At 15, it's unlikely that we'll nab someone with both good hit tool and power tool. Most times we either get someone with a good hit tool and uninspiring/no power or someone with power but questionable hit tool. In such a scenario the former would be a better bet, IMO. Mind you, I'm not exactly thrilled with this pick, although I don't hate it either. I can see the merit in it, but I don't exactly consider it a flashy pick either.

  12. Bubba Chandler and Anthony Solometo are still on the board. Perhaps they could be targets if the Brewers feel like ponying up for them
  13. This draft for has been a bit irritating in that the guys who I wanted to fall ended up getting picked a few picks ahead of us (House, Ford). Madden would've been an amazing pick at 33, but of course the Tigers nab him just one pick ahead of us.
  14. IMO this draft has been... solid. Not as flashy as Day 1 of last year's draft but overall Frelick and Black seem like solid players.
  15. Wow, Marlins swinging for the fences with Mack after drafting Watson. Either they’re gonna go full discount mode on Day 2 or they’ve got some wicked deals under the table.
  16. From Will Sammon… Brewers scout Ty Blankmeyer on first round pick Sal Frelick: "If I was just a fan, I would go to the game and pay to watch Sal Frelick play baseball. ... This is the whole package in my opinion. It's legit." Must've repeated phrase, "He's a winner," half a dozen times. Perhaps Frelick is a solid player, but I’m chuckling at this statement because saying the guy is a winner seems like a really cliche thing to say. Sounds especially like something one would say to justify a controversial pick (which Frelick isn’t).
  17. I would’ve preferred Watson, but who knows. Perhaps there’s something behind the scenes between Watson and Miami that we’ll never know about.
  18. The Marlins have been in on Watson forever. It's very possible they had a deal worked out with him in the unlikely event he made it this far, and that's a luxury the Brewers probably weren't able to match. I wonder if this is similar to what went on with Jose Fernandez. Perhaps Watson just refused to sign with anyone except Miami.
  19. Watson to Miami. Clearly Miami has no issues with his signability
  20. Seems like we’re taking Frelick. I can’t believe we’re passing on Watson
  21. Bummed at Ford being taken by the Mariners, though. He was one of my faves
  22. House to Washington. I was hoping he’d fall to 15
