    I’m surprised there is someone pining for Doug Melvin. His tenure wasn’t bad and the trades back then were more flashy than it is today, but it’s not as if the end result was markedly better. Plus the farm system was consistently below-average, our development/scouting of international prospects was relatively primitive compared to how it is today, and we actually had non-competitive seasons mixed in with the highs.

    I imagine the Dodgers are way more comfortable with trading for Skubal because they know they can extend him and they have the budget to keep him for as long as they wish. We don't have that luxury.

    And that’s the thing- there’s no contract extension we can offer that can’t be easily countered by the likes of the Dodgers and Yankees. Those kind of teams can just throw out $400m+ contracts like Halloween candies.

    The Dodgers are the media darlings of baseball. They’ll be chirping about how we should simply trade Miz for a bag of balls and a thank you note because the Dodgers were gracious enough to gaze in our direction.

    I think if there’s one GM who would bank on that 21% chance, it’s AJ Preller.

    Considering that Miller is likely pitching only one inning per outing, you’re actually getting less than a full Misiorowski.

    Ironically, the Padres might be the only team dumb enough to give up that much for a reliever.

    Knowing the media’s hard-on for big-market teams, a moldy slice of cheese in their cafeteria would constitute as a prospect.

    Makes me wonder if that was one of the big reasons why we prioritized Maiorana over Havard. Maybe the FO told Havard something along the lines of "If you do well in JuCo we'll give you a fatter paycheck than what we can offer right now."

    WOW. Didn’t think we’d be able to sign him! He was one guy I really wanted us to sign. Good size, already good present stuff, and high spin breaking ball. Can’t wait to see what our pitching lab can do with him.

    Seems like a shortsighted move on Clemson’s part. They get a player back who they think they can compete with, but they likely harmed their own credibility with MLB teams. Unless every college adopts the same tactic all at once, not too many teams are gonna be thrilled with doing business with Clemson players. And that means fewer HS kids may be inclined to play for Clemson knowing that they may be soft-blackballed by the league.

    Unless Bell and Maiorana are willing to sign for $150k each (they likely aren’t), seems like they’re both going to college.

    If that’s true and that Clemson offered some last-minute NIL money, it seems like it’s gonna be a mess for everyone involved. We lose the slot money, Knaak is probably losing a lot of leverage once he’s a senior, and teams are probably going to be very wary of drafting players from Clemson knowing that they may pull the same stunt again.

I wonder what happened behind the scenes. This is the second time in three years where we failed to sign a top 10 pick. You’d think the FO would have a good idea of what it would take to sign these guys (and whether they’d be open to signing at all), so either someone didn’t do their due diligence or Knaak backed out at the last minute.

    How are you so certain that Miller will maintain his elite performance? By what metric can you be so ardent that he is and will continue to be infallible? It's true that we don't know what we'll get out of anyone, including Pena. But you're the one fired up about how Miller continuing to be elite is as certain as the sun rising in the morning.

    The history of baseball is littered with guys who people thought were going to be great but didn't pan out for one reason or another. Unless you have perfect clairvoyance (if you do, I'm not sure why you're not out there making a ton of profit with it), you can never be 100% certain how a player's career will pan out. It's easy to say that we shouldn't have trusted guys like Turnbow, Henderson, etc. because we have the benefit of hindsight, but at the time I'm sure there were plenty of people back then who at least wouldn't have guessed that things would fall apart so suddenly for them. That being said, I'm not saying that we should only offer a bag of balls for the guy- the Padres have the right to expect at least a solid return for him. But I think it is unwise to just readily hand someone like Pena for him.

    I'd be surprised if we don't sign Knaak. That would be the second time in 3 years in which we fail to sign a top 10 pick. You'd think our FO would have a good idea of how much these guys would sign for before drafting them.

    If Sproat can’t find any semblance of consistency, we may see Hardin up sooner rather than later.
