  1. Bruce doesn't belong in that discussion. He's more Corey Hart than he is Ryan Braun. He gets rated on what people think he can do, not what he's actually done. When did Latos become the 2nd coming? A 3.47 ERA last year in the AL West? He'll be solid but expect more like 3.80 in GAB. I'm on record as saying the Brewers will dearly miss Fielder and that's not meant as a knock on Gamel either. He just affected the lineup so much. Ramirez doesn't have near that affect. Braun has never been in a lineup with no Prince and that's going to affect him. Gonzalez is only an upgrade in the minds of Betancourt haters. He won't be. I think the division is up for grabs. But my worry is that if the mainstays of the Cardinal lineup stay healthy, they are the team to beat. Yeah Albert is gone, but Holiday, Berkman, and Beltran have all produced in their careers without Albert as a teammate. You can't say the same about Weeks, Braun and Hart who've all played almost entirely with Prince as a rock in there. Pre 2011 though, Greinke was coming off an underwhelming year after a previous Cy Young and changed teams. Latos had a lights out rookie year and an underwhelming year last year. Bruce at 25 isnt much different from Braun pre MVP. Id take Greinke and Braun today no question, but the Reds have the same potential we did a year ago. Its just potential, but you cant say it isnt eerily similiar.
  2. Anyone have numbers on how he was throwing to 2nd? I thought it was about average.
  3. Average catchers are not easy to find. 2013 UDFAs: Catchers Rod Barajas (37) - $3.5MM club option, no buyout Josh Bard (35) Henry Blanco (41) - $1.24MM mutual option Ryan Doumit (32) Koyie Hill (34) Chris Iannetta (30) - $5MM club option with a $250K buyout; player can void Gerald Laird (33) Russell Martin (30) Jeff Mathis (30) Brian McCann (29) - $12MM club option with a $500K buyout Jose Molina (37) - $1.5MM club option with a $300K buyout Miguel Montero (29) Mike Napoli (31) Dioner Navarro (29) Wil Nieves (35) Miguel Olivo (34) - $3MM club option with a $750K buyout Ronny Paulino (32) A.J. Pierzynski (36) Humberto Quintero (33) David Ross (36) Carlos Ruiz (34) - $5MM club option with a $500K buyout Brian Schneider (36) Kelly Shoppach (33) Chris Snyder (32) - mutual option Yorvit Torrealba (34) Matt Treanor (37)
  4. That should work out well, his first arb in 2014 would have been well over $2M right? He's getting a raise in 2012 and 13 but we should easily make that back. Its guaranteed money but it's a good bet imo.
  5. There are a lot of parallels between the 2012 Reds and the 2011 Brewers. Compare Votto, Bruce, Phillips, Latos, Cueto to Fielder, Braun, Weeks, Greinke, Gallardo.
  6. This really surprised me -Jack Moore
  7. Agreed. I would just usually assume that when both sides are looking at a trade like that, they are both docking value on it and trying to look else where if possible. The Reds would probably be OK with sending us a C+ prospect but the Brewers sending KRod over could pitch against them a half dozen times and cost them a close division this year. KRod probably isn't going to get anything great in a trade, it would probably be more salary dump than anything, so I'd rather send him as far away as possible if we have any hopes of winning the division.
  8. Because the Reds went all in and the Cardinals won the WS last year I don't know if we are 3rd or 1st but I see the top 3 as a pickem.
  9. I was watching stats a little bit today and I saw Gennett and Green were both a HR away in the 7th. Glad one of them got it.
  10. Well KC doesnt need a closer, they have 2-3 good options there still. The Reds probably wouldnt trade with us. They do need a closer though and Ive heard them linked to Marmol FWIW.
  11. The royals have at least 3 RP better than Broxton, that is a very deep bullpen. What does Yost like to do with closers?
  12. In 6 days the Mariners/As play the first regular season games at 6 AM in Tokyo (what the hell, MLB?)
  13. Wolf is getting hammered and Darvish mowed down Weeks, Morgan, Braun
  14. Why read into this? He's also got Ishikawa batting 4th and a DH in the lineup. I'd guess the 5th hitter is going to be Weeks or Hart with Gamel probably next in line.
  15. I hate UZR so much They are equally bad/terrible with the bat, but there is no question we went from below average defense to above average defense I am rooting against that vesting 2013 option though
  16. that crap made me late for work like 4 times already I would allow at least a half hour more than usual coming from the west. The construction is pretty much right between hwy 100 and miller park, so it couldn't be in a worse spot. I have to leave 15-20 minutes earlier than usual to get to work
  17. I think of it more like, you left the stove on and set the stove on fire but remembered before it burned down your house
  18. It will probably be 2 weeks. I don't see how this affects the infield at all. What could Gamel do that you would want to bench him 2 weeks into the season? Ishikawa would probably make the team and hopefully get 0 playing time until getting sent to AAA or whatever.
  19. I hope Weeks or Braun comments on what he looks like from the batters box
  20. Power spike I can buy but overall the best years are 30-35 for the most physically demanding position in baseball? That, not so much.
  21. I don't know, looking at their starting lineup, they have essentially 6 rookies penciled in as full time starters. They have this many ABs, career: 195 221 168 808 (Jed Lowrie) 208 469 192 7433 (Carlos Lee) So they pretty much have 2 guys that have a full season of experience. Also it's not like most of these guys are great prospects, they are just throwing it at the wall and see what sticks.
  22. I was thinking maybe they wanted to open up spots for prospects in the starting rotation, and they couldn't get any trade offers for Myers, so they moved him to the pen as opposed to sending one of their prospects back to AAA. Or bounce the prospect around between starting and bullpen, which might be worse.
  23. We NEED to find a SS to take some PAs away from Alex Gonzalez and his vesting of $4M at 525 PAs. Trust me, people are not going to want that to happen come June.
  24. What to do with Aoki now? I think he'll be a really good player, like maybe 3 WAR per 150 games, but how are we going to find out? There isn't much logic to playing Aoki over Morgan against RHP or over Gomez against LHP. LF and RF are locked down. You can shuffle Hart to 1B but then you are playing Aoki over Gamel. I don't see Aoki as someone you need to platoon, from what I understand he hits both sides pretty well. What days does he crack the line up though?
