  1. They added a lot more than 1 Win with Prince Fielder in that lineup. I don't care what WAR says, or any other advanced Metric, that's a good team. WAR is meant to compare players and measure their performances, I don't know a whole lot of people who literally take WAR and translate it literally into actual wins and losses. Prince and Cabrera in the middle of that order is devastating, and they already had a great lineup, and they're still trying to acquire Garza for Turner+ whomever. Verlander/Fister/Garza/Porcello and that lineup is as close to a lock to win a division as any team you're going to see going into next year IMO. Well I think the point was VMart is a pretty good hitter too. Same value for defense and baserunning (none). If you look at it as a trade of VMart for Prince they gain a little bit, but not that much. Prince is on a 9 year deal though, not a 1 year replacement plan for VMart, so I suppose it doesn't make sense to look at it in those terms. If the Tigers decided "VMart is hurt, must Prince Fielder for 9 years" they are seriously screwed up.
  2. Moneyball should have been right up my alley but I was disappointed.
  3. IMO Fielder will be a good/great hitter for a long time but he had to move to DH as soon as possible or he would be costing many runs on his defense.
  4. Jimmy Rollins actually said rather cryptically that he knew of cases of failed drug tests that were overturned and never went public
  5. Whoa the career difference between Aramis and McGehee is microscopic? One of them has OPSed over 800 7 of the past 8 years, the other has done it twice, once in half a season, and last year was the worst offensive 3B in the league by a wide margin. And Prince was probably the worst defensive 1B in baseball. He has the reach of a tree stump and the range of a walrus.
  6. It's pretty much the same process as the courts with lawyer teams and multiple hearings, etc. That crap can take years.
  7. I don't think people are fully prepared for Alex Gonzalez. Offensively last year his numbers were almost identical to Yuni B. The only category that really sticks out as being different is K%, Gonzalez struck out twice as often.
  8. I doubt he'll even address it until after the appeal process
  9. If I was going to trade him I would look for a LOOGY and a prospect. I'd rather have KRod but if I had to cut salary, that is how I would do it for this team.
  10. related: This is what I think the 25 man roster will look like OF Ryan Braun* OF Nyjer Morgan OF Carlos Gomez OF Norichika Aoki OF Corey Hart OF Caleb Gindl/Logan Shafer* 1B Mat Gamel 2B Rickie Weeks SS Alex Gonzalez 3B Aramis Ramirez IF Cesar Izturis/Brooks Conrad/Jeff Bianchi IF Taylor Green/Travis Ishikawa C Jonathon Lucroy C George Kottaras SP Yovani Gallardo SP Zack Greinke SP Shaun Marcum SP Randy Wolf SP Chris Narveson RP John Axford RP Francisco Rodriguez RP Kameron Loe RP Jose Veras RP Marco Estrada RP Zack Braddock/Manny Parra RP Brandon Kintzler/Fankie De La Cruz/Mike McClendon/Michael Fiers/Tim Dillard Braun will probably get suspended and they will use Shafer/Gindl for 50 games. Izturis will be a strong favorite to backup middle infield, and Green to backup corner infield. The last 2 bullpen spots I'm just guessing. They might use one of those for another infielder like Ishikawa, but I don't think they will sign any more relievers to a MLB contract. They will probably keep that roster spot open for whatever comes up. If I forgot about someone, let me know. I left off Rogers, Scarpetta, Peralta, Rivas, a few others because I don't think they will be on the roster opening day.
  11. Well whatever happens they did a lot of good things. They brought him in for a workout first, they gave him an incentive laden deal, they didn't bid a crazy amount. Not many teams that post can say that.
  12. If Hart plays some 1B it's going to be weird watching an outfield of Aoki - Gomez - Morgan
  13. It's still too much but $8M is very very reasonable. This actually makes him very tradable as well, since I'm sure he would have had a lot of suitors on the free market if he was looking for 1 year $8M.
  14. http://newspaper.li/static/0ef4c1b7f8339a31bbda4cb66bf3a0be.jpg Assistant manager or assistant to the general manager????
  15. Can't platoon more than 1 or 2 positions. But it's always worth it to platoon 1 or 2 positions.
  16. I can see why he was available as a 24/25 year old who couldn't OPS .700 in AA last year with 500 plate appearances
  17. If you don't want to install anything or screw around with your cookies you can always just use a proxy server. Just google something like 'free proxy' or 'proxy web browser' and you will find a million websites that let you put in a web address.
  18. JSOnline has some hilarious security. I remember I used to get a bunch of free content just by stopping a redirect.
  19. You definitely can't use UZR/150 because that's an extrapolation stat and WAR is a counting stat. For example Craig Counsell had an off the charts UZR/150 last year of 40 because UZR liked him in a small sample and extrapolated it like he was an every day starter. I don't buy into the 'past 3 seasons' logic of UZR either for a few reasons. Things change, in 3 years a player can be a different quality fielder in that time. Mostly though, if a stat isn't accurate over 1 season and over 1000 innings, I don't trust the 3 year average much more.
  20. UZR is the worst. I really, really like the wOBA side of it, really good for comparing offensive production. Just think about this: last year Casey McGehee would have been a negative WAR player but his fielding was judged so good by UZR that he was supposedly a positive one.

  22. Glad to have someone who sees the CF position next year the same way I do. I do really like watching Gomez play defense in center field. He reminds me of a golden retriever chasing down a frisbee.
  23. Probably won't hear much info until after things settle. Anything said can and will be used against them in a court of law, they say.
