  1. The irony in all of this is that you are taking a team named after that tradition and identity ("Brewers") and now removing the link to the name which even more closely is linked to that identity and tradition ("Miller"). Miller isn't a corporation, it's the link to that identity. Milwaukee Brewers + Miller Park = identity/tradition, Milwaukee Brewers + American Family Insurance Field/Park/Stadium means nothing to that identity/tradition even with the name "Brewers".
  2. Milwaukee once had a national identity as the Beer Capital of the US and it was marketed as such years ago. When most of the Breweries shut down and/or merged that identity was lost and wasn't replaced (unless you want to argue former beer capital is an identity). Nationally Milwaukee is now just any small metropolitan area and has no true identity. That identity was a part of growing up in Milwaukee years ago and is important to many for nostalgia, but also sense of community. Miller was the leading brewery and intimately linked to the Beer Capital identity. Millers's battle with Anheuser-Busch was a national fight for Beer supremacy and the 1982 World Series was an extension of that battle. The sheer number of breweries in Milwaukee at least gave us the "Capital" identity whether Miller bested Anheuser or not. Most of that is now part of history as most breweries shut down and Miller was taken over, however, that link to a national identity is still an important part of Milwaukee identity to many and the link to Miller Park is a visceral thing, a part of history and a part of the Brewers history. Miller is not just a name of a brewery, it was a part of Milwaukee's identity for decades and while it isn't an independent Milwaukee-based company anymore, for many it is still a symbol of a day when we as a collective group had a national identity that set us apart from Portland, or Nashville, or Charlotte, or any other smaller metropolitan area. That is why many are upset over the loss of "Miller Park".
  3. A season for Pollock has been around 106 games a year. His career war of 17.2 equates to about 3 fWAR per "season". His deal is likely $65M as I doubt he opts out or declines the year 5 option. At a going rate of $10M per WAR for FA he would need to put up 6.5 WAR over the lifetime of the contract. At a closer to current rate of $8M per WAR he would need to put up a little over 8 WAR to be worth the contract. And for $6M per WAR that's 10.1 WAR. If he plays more than 106 games a year or gives the Dodgers more than 10 WAR (or 2 WAR/year) then he would offer very good value. It's a risk given his injury history, but his past performance and skill set would indicate that he has a very good chance to keep performing at a high level for the next few years. If I was betting man on over/under on 8 WAR, I'd have no problem putting some money on over.
  4. In year 1 of his contract he put up a -0.1 fWAR. Yep, he was below replacement level... He is, however, a bounce back candidate as he's consistently had crappy/good alternating years. I might even be inclined to have him as a late round fantasy pickup for 1B as his previous WAR on good years has been ~3.6 fWAR...
  5. Yep. And if he played for an East Coastish team, he'd get the recognition he deserves. I think the late start of West Coast games just prevents a lot of people from seeing him play and recognizing that he could be the greatest player of all time.
  6. Harper has a fWAR of 30.7 over 7 seasons with the nationals. Over that time that puts Harper 12th on the list of positional players. The list is actually Trout, an almost 50% drop, then the rest of the players in MLB. The press and hype over Harper exceeds about 8 of the players that are above him on the fWAR list for his career. Mike Trout has a fWAR of 64.7 in 7+ (7.25 ish) seasons in MLB. That's the player who should get the next record breaking contract. Edit: Machado is 15th on that list and Cain/Yelich are 18/19.
  7. If you divide attendance by estimated payroll, the Brewers have the largest number, which once again shows the level of support the Brewers get from their fans. The smallest market in MLB has the largest number of attendance per $ of payroll.
  8. Oh yeah, they were epic bad. It's been several years the brewer have been near the bottom of MLB and as I remember it was pretty consistent drop so whomever is responsible needs to be canned...
  9. You're right, he's probably better than Jacob Barnes too... Brach's K/9, BB/9, FIP, xFIP, and pitch velocity are all trending worse the last few years. Sure, he could find some adjustment that might give him some more velocity or not walk 4.5 batters per 9 IP, but all of those metrics state this is a player in decline. The Brewer's approach of finding RP who are just entering their prime has risks, but so does signing pitchers that are in decline... Would I take Brach over Albers? In a second, but that's a time travel issue. WRT Jeffress, he actually picked up about 1 MPH on his pitches last year compared to 2017 and that was part of the reason he had such a good year (xFIP, FIP, K/9, BB/9, ERA all better than Brach).
  10. I wouldn't be surprised if the Brewers are at least in contact with his agent. I just think the Brewers do have a budget constraint that the Padres, White Sox, and Phillies don't so in a bidding war we would likely lose. Even if Machado would settle for a high AAV contract for 3 years then an opt out, I still think the Brewers can't be competitive. A team (Padres) that would sink so much money in a mediocre Eric Hosmer may not know how to value Machado, but from what I've read they have money to spend. My only hesitation with naming them was that's a bad hitters park in SD and all the other prime bidders have very hitter friendly parks, which could sway Manny... Well if it doesn't happen, someone could start another thread about Ryan Braun - that would be good for 10-15 pages of posts!
  11. Brachs on the wrong side of 30 (a few days shy of 33 on opening day), had his best season at age 29 and has been getting worse each year. Typical Cubs buy of an aging reliever that has low upside, but high floor. Is he better than Matt Albers? Absolutely. Is he better than anyone else in the Brewers bullpen? nope. Given that the Cubs can't afford anything else, it's probably their best option.
  12. Those numbers are pretty proportional to what Lorenzo Cain got last year (including the 5th year player option), given that both signed FA contract at age 31, injury history and better historical performance from Cain...
  13. Briggs, do you get up to Milwaukee at all to see the Brewers "live"? Would the name change impact your "investment" in brewers? Just wondering as there has been a lot of unhappy people on social media and wondering if there would be any real impact to the name change other than negative comments on it... In general, for those who are really unhappy with the name change, how will this impact your spending on the brewers? None, some, a lot? How are you going to put your unhappiness into action?
  14. 1. Bryce Harper - Phillies 2. Manny Machado - Padres - they are one of the mystery teams and will end up throwing the most money at him. 3. A.J. Pollack - Dodgers - Friedman et al. are just waiting for Harper to set the market. 4. Dallas Kuechel - Phillies 5. Craig Kimbrel - Red Sox 6. Mike Moustakas - White Sox - they miss out on big two and are left going after Moustakas. 7. Marwin Gonzalez - Cardinals - they have money to spend and could use a super utility player. 8. Gio Gonzalez - Oakland 9. Adam Jones - Orioles - if the Indians wanted Jones and Jones wanted to play in Cleveland they would already have made a deal, I think Jones wants to stay close to home and will re-up with the Os. 10. Wade Miley - Braves.
  15. Because they are smart enough to understand the term "warrior" refers to fighters across multiple cultures, not just Native Americans... They also don't have any promotional logos, etc. that make a clear relationship between the name "Warriors" and Native Americans... Marquette could have just adopted similar "generic" logos for "Warriors", but instead tripped head first into the... (the remainder of this post won't pass any profanity filter)....
  16. I think the Pomeranz signing is similar to the Grandal signing for the Brewers. Both players want to maximize their ability to put up awesome numbers so that when they go into FA next year they get a deal they feel they are worth... As others have stated Pomeranz + AmFamArama Field/Park/Stadium doesn't offer the same opportunity as AT&T Park.
  17. That sounds like a bit of hyperbole to me... Like when I post that Orlando Arcia would have the same stats if he went up to the plate blindfolded...
  18. One of the tweets from Haudricourt said that the Giants wanted to interview him for their President of Baseball ops last year (before hiring Farhan Zaidi) and that this promotion basically prevents any team from talking to him unless the Brewers give permission. Edit: as MadScientist indicated in his above post..
  19. For me it's: First Wisconsin Building Marquette Warriors Marc Plaza As an alumnus I am firmly on record that they won't get one dollar of donations from me until they get rid of the "Golden Eagles" abomination....
  20. 1. Bryce Harper I wonder if the Nats would stick by the 10/$300M offer they made at the end of the season given it sounds like teams are not inclined to go past 7 years on Harper? I know that they're the elite of the current FA class, but both Harper and Machado are really the lower end of elite in MLB. Neither has put up the numbers of Mookie Betts/Mike Trout (few players have), but they are really in the mix with a lot of players who can put up 30WAR in 6 years... Do you break the bank for them then what's left when a true elite player like Trout/Betts comes? Yelich looks like a 5WAR player, Jose Ramirez may have surpassed Machado in value, so have Bregman and Lindor. While both of these guys have numbers that are better than most of the current Free Agents, there's a lot of talent in MLB that is close to them or better, so do you break the current salary structure for them when there will be 20+ of the same type coming and looking for similar deals. I wouldn't blink to give Trout a 8 year $40M-$50M AAV contract as he will likely end his career as the greatest of all time... Machado and Harper are in the top 30-40 players, not the top 10-15...
  21. Many bluetooth devices don't broadcast or receive connection signals all the time. Sometimes you just need to make sure they are both "broadcasting" at the same time (usually during power up they will by default). Try getting your TV ready to find the speaker and activate it's 5 minute search, then power cycle your Sony speakers and see if the TV "sees" the speakers. If that doesn't work, follow the instructions on the Sony to Connect to Sony TV, then activate the TV to search for speakers. If neither of those work, then there is likely a bluetooth incompatibility issue...
  22. The Phillies owner was quoted early in the off-season that they were going to be stupid with some of their money this free agent season...
