  1. I might be biased, but the Packers have to be one of the best destinations for a Head Coach in Football. No reason to settle for an outdated retread, or "connected" candidate. Unfortunately, I smell Murphy going with safe moderate ceiling/high floor candidates and passing on dynamic high risk options (high ceiling/low floor). everything he's done is conservative...
  2. Dubon. I think he's the answer to more than one question being asked around here, including this one. I respectfully disagree. Dubon is the answer if your primary plan and your backup plan fail (or "Plan C"). I think the Brewers are waiting on Tulo to make his decision before moving on (if he chooses another option). If he agrees to play for the Brewers, I can see him as a decent backup plan for Arcia, a temporary placeholder at 2B until Hiura is ready and to spell Shaw against tough lefties, etc. If Tulo chooses elsewhere I see the Brewers making a push for Lowrie or Cabrera first. Lowrie could take some PA away from Arcia, but he hasn't played at SS in 2 years and his range/defense may be just OK. Cabrera provides lower upside on the offensive and defensive side, but is likely cheaper and a shorter commitment. We'll see, but Tulo picking the Brewers would really be the best option at this point. I hope the Cal Brewers (esp. Braun & Yelich) have reached out to him.
  3. Last chance for the happy couple to be able to file married filing jointly for 2018? The tax code is amazing in some respects. You calculate some items based on fractions and exact number of days, but for dependents and something like marriage, oh just round up to the nearest year... Why not just enter date of the year for baby being born or marriage and calculate from their? For deaths everything is based on the date of death. I guess for marriage and births the thought is let's be generous, but for a death we calculate to the minute... if the intention was to do it as bass ackwards as possible, there would be minor changes to the current system...
  4. Where's "The importance of a backup plan for SS" Topic? Brewers were 28th in SS productivity last year (-2.7 WAA from average; only PA teams were worse) and, while Sogard is gone, what happens if Arcia continues to hit like a blind squirrel? His defense doesn't make up for his anemic bat and just hoping he's more like 2017 than 2018 is a path we've already been down before (Villar)... The Brewers were a 500 team last year when they were getting almost nothing out of the bottom of the lineup. Near average production out of C/SS/2B would go a long way for the Brewers to be a serious playoff contender in 2019. For all the concern about an upgrade at C and 2B, the Brewer got average production out of Pina/Kratz/Bandy last year (-0.2 WAA from average), and better production out of 2B (mostly due to Shaw; -0.2 WAA from average) than the black whole at SS. We need at least a platoon partner for Arcia and in a perfect world, a replacement in the wings, if he stinks again. Every other playoff team last year had at least a league average SS.
  5. So his coordinators are a significant part of the process. Given his/their track record I would guess they are in demand by other schools and with NWU being so academically inclined, and Football isn't a huge cash cow, they would not likely pay their assistants a ton of money, so there should have been plenty of departures. How many of his assistants have been hired away by other schools?
  6. Hopefully that stinker means there won't be any real interest in Philbin other than the consideration of going through the motions of an interview...
  7. They should have promoted Zook to IHC when they fired McCarthy... That would have guaranteed a better draft position... I know letting coaches go mid-season is pretty rare, but if anyone deserves NOT to have a job it's Zook...
  8. Yeah, Ramon was worse than a replacement level player for his CAREER. I don't understand the Flores/Gamel comparison.... Gamel has been equivalent to Ryan Braun the last two years. EQUIVALENT fWAR over ~850 PAs. Gamel = Braun >> Flores
  9. Yep, the brewers have been making roster decisions of square pegs into round holes simply because they are stuck with Braun's contract. Braun was replacement level first half of last year and only ended up slightly above replacement (1.3 fWAR) due to a hot streak at the end. Overall the Brewers are paying $10-$12M per Braun WAR and his contract makes them force him into the lineup. Everything in his numbers the last 2 years screams below average corner OF and, as you point out in another post, we were lucky that they didn't cut Aguilar after ST in 2018 because of a roster crunch. Last 3 years: Keon Broxton in 796 PA = 3.5 fWAR (0.440 WAR/100PA) Ryan Braun in 1436 PA = 6.3 fWAR (0.439 WAR/100PA) I won't even bother to look at salary as it isn't even a discussion at this point. There really is minimal value to playing Braun full-time at this point and, IMHO, absolutely no reason to continue to make roster decisions to get his "bat" in the lineup. His contract is a sunk cost so they should just move to minimize his weaknesses and maximize his strengths (i.e. reduce his playing time against RH). I think Stearns understands by replacing a poor platoon partner (Santana) with a very good platoon partner (Gamel) for Braun.
  10. Are there 2 players named Jordan Lyles, because I can't find the one anyone should be wringing their hands over losing...
  11. I don't recall who made the comment earlier about the Rangers being one of the worst teams at defensive shifts, but I think they were spot on: Claudio Career wOBA: No Shift = 0.328 Shift (ALL) = 0.222
  12. Now if Cain can continue to be a high OB guy...even if he drops 20-25 points, and plays good defense, his contract will be fine. But I think this is a more reasonable deal for the Phils than at 1st glance....at least my first glance. Your right the signing is about right for market value. Based on last year and this year, so far, the going price for a FA is closer to $8M/War than the historic $10M/War. So the Phillies need Cutch to make 6 WAR and the deal is market average. That's not a reach even with a noticeable reduction in his abilities. The one thing that may factor in is that the NL East has a ton of TOR starters and is a pitching deep division so it wouldn't surprise me that his stats take a hit as he has to face tougher pitching. What this signing says more than anything is that GMs with deep pockets don't leverage that as often as they just use it to be lazy. There are other options that could be had for $5-6M/WAR , but that might require only 1 year contracts and a need to repeat the exercise in 2020 and 2021 (that's work!)... They often just make the easy choice because they have the extra money. Speaking of the Cain signing, he needs to return 10 WAR for the Brewers to have made the right deal. He had 5.7 last year so in 1 year of the 5 year contract they are already halfway there... I'd bet a lot that in the next 4 years he can put up at least 4.3 WAR - that should be better odds than McCutcheon exceeding 6 WAR in 3 years.
  13. 1) Jeffrey Hammonds. 2) Jeffrey Hammonds. 3) Jeffrey Hammonds. 4) Jeffrey Hammonds. 5) Jeffrey Hammonds. 6) Troy Tulowitski 7) Every other ex-Rockie... Edit: if the rest of baseball was paying attention to Schoop last season with the Brewers he will never see a fastball again (even ahead 3-0 in the count).
  14. Dipito looks like he’s auditioning for MLB networks first reality show titles biggest loser... I feel for the Mariners fans like I felt for the Angels fans when Dipito was their GM... go Seahawks!
  15. The comparison isn’t perfect. For one thing Montana was the starter for 10.5 years and Young for 8 (they had much more overlap than Favre/Rodgers as Young only began starting in his age 30 season plus he was in Tampa for 2 years). In 5 years we’ll have 30 years of packer HOF QB compared to 18.5 years of Niners. I’m not inspired that they will be back in the super bowl for the next couple of years so we shall see where the Packers end up in comparison. I’m one of those who remembers the bad years as that was most of my first 30 years of life. The packers from the 70’s to early 90s were the lions of that period. I understand the argument that many current fans whine about every decision, that often comes with prolonged success. The other problem with a team that’s been successful for as long as the current packers is that lost in the winning is an over abundance of bad coaching. The winning masks the underperformance. I can’t prove that McCarthy was a problem with the Net results for the last 13 years because it’s a complicated exercise with a lot of variables, but I sure as heck can see the ultimate return (super bowl appearances) is not what it should be given the talent. McCarthy had 13 years to show it was just bad luck and he’ll leave without showing that. It will be fun to see how he performs at his next gig. For his sake he should find a team with a lot of untapped talent to make him look good.
  16. The only other comparison I can think of to the Packers with Favre and Rodgers is the Niners with Joe Montana and Steve Young. The Niners were 5-0 in super bowls with those 2 quarterbacks. The Packers are 2-1 with a ton of missed opportunities. Not all of that is on McCarthy, but let's not forget the talent level he has had at his disposal (not so much recently, but plenty of his 13 years). This organization has underperformed given having those 2 QBs back to back with only 3 super bowl appearances in 25 years. McCarthy was/is a nice guy from all indications, but his game decisions/adjustments are mediocre and its time to move on. No hate for him, but his talents aren't enough to elevate a mediocre team and it can be argued he has hampered a talented team.
  17. I was through with McCarthy after the embarrassing loss to Seattle in the playoffs... Just been waiting for the axe to fall for years... Murphy is part of the problem... Way too slow getting rid of Ted Thompson and now with McCarthy. Wouldn't mind seeing the board dump him and bring in a new President who restructures the team back to what makes sense and not the twisted crap Murphy created by not having McCarthy report to Gute... This isn't nearly as bad as the need to clean house back in the early 90's, but this is an organization that has a very questionable leader who keeps NOT making the necessary decision or when he does make a decision, gets it wrong (reporting structure).
  18. As most cinema buffs are probably aware, Filmstruck is closing down tomorrow due to poor leadership by AT&T/Time Warner/WarnerMedia. For those not in the know, Filmstruck was a streaming service partnership between Turner Classic Movies and Criterion that focused on film classics through the Criterion collection, TCM and other sources. While I had issues with Filmstruck it didn't impact my subscribing to the service. The main desire for me was access to the Criterion library of classic movies and their great supplements. Criterion.com/Criterion announced before Thanksgiving that they would offer their own streaming service starting in "Spring 2019". For those not aware, you can sign up for "charter membership" at criterion.com (just a name/email/type of membership) signup at this point (no credit card, payment info, etc). For anyone interested in this resource I recommend going to criterion.com and signing up. Filmstruck from all indications was not a money losing operation, it just didn't encompass a large enough footprint for a large media giant to care about. If you are looking for alternatives to the Hollywood movie drones/clones, MUBI (Love it), Criterion (Love it) and Fandor (Like it) are three options for streaming services of alternative movies/films, shorts, documentaries. Support real cinema and go to criterion.com and signup (you don't have to commit to anything)!
  19. Funny, I thought the disservice is all the posters jumping to conclusions without a fraction of the information... information they aren't entitled to, unless they view themselves as entitled...
  20. After that last inning I don't know which team I want to win... Initially I wanted the Rockies as they just don't have the talent of the Cubs, but after seeing another inning of the futile Cubs offense it would be really nice to kick them out of the playoffs...
  21. It would be great to have a large enough Brewers fan contingent to chant "lets go brewers" and psych out both teams...
  22. The 2018 NL MVP is a race like the 1973 Belmont stakes was a race...
  23. Yelich and Cain account for almost 50% of the Brewers offensive WAR... Both are in the discussion for MVP... The only other comparable playoff team is the Indians with Ramirez/Lindor accounting for 50% of the offense (or Red Sox driven by Betts monster season)... Imagine if the rest of the Brewers offense hadn't regressed so much - 1st in the central with a comfortable lead, best record in the NL with home field throughout the playoffs...
  24. So it's not a new AAA Affiliate, the AAA affiliate in CS is moving to San Antonio and the AA team in San Antonio is moving to Amarillo, but leaving the name of "Missions" in San Antonio... ok... Well at least it is out of Colorado Springs, but my pick would have been Alamoniacs...
