  1. By the way, when will all the chirping start about not signing Lima? He was a Newark Bear a month ago. I'm sure Melvin contacted him, but he couldn't promise him a spot on the major league roster. After all we have Pasqual Coco at Indy!
  2. MassBrew you've hit the bigtime now. You've learned the subtle technique of putting something catchy in the title then hiding the information so we have to look through every post. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  3. Philly probably shouldn't count as turf... I think it's some sort of hybrid between real grass and plastic stuff. Do they graft the grass onto plastic? That would be one weird hybrid. Sorta like scoop and confucious.
  4. xis, I'm sure they offered him a contract, but was it real or was it the minimum needed to retain his rights? I'm sure it was both. They probably offered him what they want to pay him which is pretty low compared to what he wants. I think I read somewhere that Rickie's agent gets paid by the hour instead of a percentage of salary. Hi, I'm Earl Scheib and I can negotiate that contract for $49.95.
  5. I know they had a meeting, have they even offered him anything? He should have been offered a contract. Based on the MLB rules if he is not sent a contract within 10 days (10?) by the team that drafted him then he becomes a free agent.
  6. What annoys me about the Viz situation is that we could have traded him easy last off season, but didn't think we were getting enough in return. I bet management feels stupid now! I wish I would have bought a few million shares of Microsoft when it was $0.01 a share. Hindsight is 20-20, but none of us have a souped up Delorean to make a hop back to this winter and make a trade with Vizcaino. If I did, I wouldn't be posting here, I would be enjoying my billions in the bank.
  7. He in no way should play in place of EY, who needs to play so he can have some trade value come the deadline. Eric Orlando Young is 36 years old and has over 5100 AB in the major leagues. I still am absolutely amazed that another 100 AB is going to make any difference in what people think they will be getting with EY. The difference in prospects would be someone who tops out in A+ versus AA. Loretta was a more marketable quantity last year and some argue that we shouldn't even play one of the players we got in that trade. Then we should release the player we get for EY the day after he joins the team. If that happens Ginter should get close to 400 AB's for the season and we should know more about him at that time. I'll use the same argument that Yost made about Helms, he needs consistant play (500 AB) to really know what he can accomplish.
  8. Why don't we just start every player in Milwaukee? If they don't get a hit or BB their first AB then we release them. Pitchers must K at least 1 batter and allow no runs in their first inning. Get rid of the minor leagues who needs them. They only slow the prospects from getting to Milwaukee.
  9. Jim Powell just talked about Matt Ford and potentially putting him in the rotation. He said that he didn't like that idea... he was happy that the Brewers are putting him into selective spots, setting him up to succeed, and being careful about how much they use him. Makes a lot of sense. He also mentioned that Ford will go to the Arizona Fall League as a starter... I hadn't heard that before but it makes sense. And if that's the case, it would probably be a bad idea to get him too many innings this year - wouldn't want him to burn out during/after the fall league. Oh good. I'm glad we're saving one of our better relievers so he can get more work in the AFL. Don't want to over burden him by having him get ML players out when we can have him pitch meaningless innings in the Fall. Setting him up to succeed? Too bad that approach doesn't hold for any other player on the team.
  10. Well the offense isn't doing too much either as they are making Tomko look pretty good while better teams make him look like Glendon Rusch. Look out Padres here we come!
  11. Rice is loaded with talent. They could have 3 starters go in the first round, and they always have a sleeper or two. That's good for the Brewers since we'll probably take pitchers in rounds 1-5 next year. However, I do have inside info that the Brewers are also considering experimenting with an alternating Pitcher/Position prospect draft order. If that's the case AND we start with a pitcher we have a good chance (it's 50/50). Now if the Brewers stay with a more traditional 5 and 5 draft "strategy" then we are set. I don't even want to get into the college/high school options at this point because that just confuses the whole draft "strategy".
  12. I related a tale that happened in Saturday's game, where Noochie Varner was introduced over the P.A. system to the crowd of over 5,000 as "Hoochie Mama". Noochie seems to be finding his bat in Huntsville (up to .276 BA) after a rough start. He even has a BB now! He also seems to have found his speed as he's 5 for 5 in SB attempts. Brad Nelson had two hits and two RBIs on the night, in just his second game back from the disabled list. Really nice to see Brad picking up where he left off before the injury. While Prince may get lots of props, Brad keeps on raking, and raking, and raking, and......
  13. Nice crowd......note to Beloit....MORE BOBBLEHEADS!! Not to Brian: Can we increase the emoticon list. Michael seems to be running out of them.
  14. I don't think there's a Division limitation. I think if a player chooses a D2 or D3 program he is also not DFE and draft eligible (until Junior year). Some players are draft eligible in their Sophomore years, but I don't know the exceptions to make them eligible.
  15. Maybe next year when he jumps up in the draft or as a DFE guy if he struggles in college? While UIC does qualify as a community college in quality, it is considered a full-time University. As such, he would not be a DFE candidate next year if he attended UIC.
  16. Listening to Jack Z. I got the feeling that they didn't feel great about there being a lot of true position 'baseball players' in this draft, so they went with a lot of athletes. Well it's always been my feeling that when things are tight or there is less talent then if you are smart and know what you are doing then you have an advantage because you should be able to pick the better ones. If all of this is just a crap shoot then it doesn't matter as much. Given that the Bando era was so bad and the Jack Z era seems to be a lot better then I don't think it's a crap shoot. In lean times you have to work harder, but if you know what you're doing that gives you an edge over Cam Bonifay. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif And I am still not happy with this draft unless some mathematician/statistician can explain to me that it is highly likely that the best player available was a position player in rounds 1-5, a pitcher in rounds 6-10, a position player in rounds 11-15, and a pitcher in rounds 16-20.
  17. The draft is going to go in directions that you don't expect it to. Gee I could of sworn that this was all decided days before the draft and every pick is a foregone conclusion. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif Serioiusly, I doubt most people on this board think an exact order will be followed since we got Mike Jones in 2001 and we weren't expecting him and last year Kazmir went shooting by when everyone predicted he would go in the top 5. After the elite players the draft seems to have dramatic turns and twists. One factor, which was hard to predict the influence, was how having Boras as a representative would affect a players draft position (down almost always, but how far?). It appears he represents few players at the top 40 (don't know the exact #, colbyjack always has this one down pretty good and might be able to give us an updated #) so there may be a few less factors influencing the rollercoaster on Tuesday and Wednesday.
  18. So who do you take? ............. Interesting call...I don't see how you can lose. I'm not sure it's really a complicated decision. Sleeth is not in the concencus top group. Weeks and Young are considered by almost everyone in the know as the concensus top 2 players, with the rest dropping in to the next grouping of players. The Brewers pick second. They should (and I expect them) to pick Weeks or Young depending on whom the Devil Rays take at #1. The one wild card IMO is whether the Devil Rays go for Harvey as a budget pick then we need to decide whether to take Young or Weeks.
  19. The point is moot..... The Brewers will be drafting Rickie Weeks, assuming Tampa Bay does not.... Anyone wanna wager? I think that it will be Weeks if he is available and the only thing I ask is that they pick him as a 2B. While it won't be the end of the world if they select him as a CF, I think it sends a bad signal to David Krynzel who is having the kind of year that you don't draft someone who's played 99.99% of his games NOT at CF, as a CF. Krynzel may never make it to the majors, but why make a statement by drafting Weeks as a CF. That would piss me off.
  20. With his bat, OhioScout among others have chimed in that he needs to learn to hit the breaking ball better, but really, who doesn't, especially at that level? Here's my main problem with the attitude that he'll move thru the system quickly. If he can't learn to hit the breaking ball it could take him just as long as a HS standout to make it to the majors and he could be another Wes Helms (production-wise) if he never does learn to hit a breaking ball. I'm pretty resolved to the fact he'll be our #1 draft pick, but there's just something about Weeks that bothers me.
  21. Harrington's advisor is indeed Scott Boras. However, the first time around I believe it was Tommy Tanzer. He turned down 7 figures TWICE! Yep it was Tanzer and I do believe the Harrington's have filed a lawsuit against him for misrepresentation.
  22. My guess is that it will be Loewen, but I'm too scared to be disappointed for the 3rd year in a row to make that my final answer . Considering your track record the last few years, could you do me a favor and root for Weeks! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. the Brewers have had a pretty nasty career betting against the odds & taking guys with big warning signs (Gold & Neugie in '98 being exhibits A & B). Good point and I would add that Kyle Peterson was another example of a player with warning signs that turned out bad. If this were baseball the 3 strikes and you're out rule would be in effect. Oh wait.....nevermind.
  24. I think Melvin's thinking is that if it comes down to two players, who are more or less equally talented, and one of them happens to project to get the majors in 2 years, and the other one 4-5 years, you take the guy who takes less time. I agree that using projected time to get to the majors as a tiebreaker is a good idea. Unfortunately, if it is used as a criteria for making the initial evaluations then you are biasing your ranking process with a criteria that should be used only for tie-breaking. The state of the Rangers farm system with regards to pitching and Melvin's statements just make me nervous that he may not be a very good final arbiter especially if he ignores some data (position prospects fail often also) that doesn't fit his bias.
  25. I'm becoming firmly of the belief that you pick the best player. In fact if Melvin decides to go with the closest to the majors prospect over the best player available then he should be fired. Immediately. The problem with this organization has been an inability to do the right thing from the top to the bottom. This team needs talent up and down the organizational ladder, sacrificing talent for speed to the majors is just the kind of decision that Wendy would make. I hope they go into this draft and pick the best player available at each position (regardless of signability - read $). We're in the 11th straight year of losing because this organization doesn't know how to plan long-term. Anything short of "the Best" is another slap in the face to the fans.
