  1. That is the one thing I can't stand about amateur drafts, especially in baseball. Why should rookies be guaranteed these lucrative deals before playing one game of pro ball? In football, at least the players have opportunities to immediately impact the team for the upcoming season, some of these guys never see the majors in their careers (as may be the case with Eric Arnett, but that's another conversation). If baseball isn't going to have a salary cap for major league payrolls, I think the least they can do is install a rookie salary cap so that teams like the Rays aren't forced to pass on a better talent because they can't afford to pay them $5 million when they rely on building through their farm system. Not that every guy asks for that much money, but it certainly favors markets like Boston and New York in being able to select anyone they want instead of someone who will sign at a reasonable price.
  2. As happy as I am that Green is out and we have another reliever up, I can't help but be a little concerned about our bullpen still. Lots of inconsistency thus far in the arms there, and now quite a bit of injuries with Parra, Saito, and Braddock all going to the DL. So my question is: when Mark Rogers gets better, should they start using him as a reliever in hopes he can help the big league pen, a la Neftali Feliz? I know you always want to feel covered with starting pitching, but Estrada's emergence along with Rivas' good start makes me feel a bit more insured in case something does happen. Out of the pen, he should be able to hit 96 consistently if he's right. Just a thought, as it seems like the bullpen depth has taken a bit of a hit lately.
  3. I just wonder right now how this defense got so bad, was Escobar's presence really so big that that he allowed for Rickie to concentrate more on balls to his left and McGehee to stay in his happy little zone? Cause lord knows that Betancourt is covering maybe about a third of the range that Esco was. Or did Willie Randolph really help these guys that much? Who knows. I know everyone is unhappy, but I think the only upgrade I can see being made is for a more defensive minded shortstop. I don't care if the guy can hit or not, I just want someone who can cover ground, pick it, and throw it. Brendan Ryan would be a nice fit, I just wonder what it'd take to get him, can't be THAT high of a price.
  4. Yeah, I was pretty stunned to see Lindor that high. I have a hard time believing that injured or not, Rendon will fall out of the top 2. He's still DHing. I was interested to see what everyone made of his rankings. More and more am I seeing Sonny Gray fall though, and I'm hoping the Brewers could get a shot at him. Unfortunate they can't trade up in the baseball draft, lol. If they did that, the draft would probably last a week.
  5. SI's John Heyman released a list where he ranked the current top 25 draftees based on talent, health, and recent performance, along with 10 other intriguing prospects (who I assume would round out his top 35?). One of the interesting bits here is that he also has Sonny Gray kind of low, coming in at #10. Maybe there is a chance Brewers could have a shot at him? Here is the the top 10 with some of his descriptions: And even though their position here does not necessarily dictate where they'll go, just to get a feel here's numbers 12 and 15: Your thoughts on his rankings?
  6. I've heard some say this could rival the 2005 draft in talent, but that's saying a lot considering the results from that draft thus far. If Alex Gordon continues his breakout year, it makes it look that much better. Still, plenty of reasons to be excited about this one.
  7. What a day for Brevard. 12-3 in the 7th. Kentrail Davis, Khris Davis, and Scott Krieger all with 3-hit games. Khris Davis intrigues me. Great power, takes his walks, and hits for a decent average. Yet, he strikes out a lot, and heard he's kinda questionable in the field and his swing can get kind of long. He'll be one to watch, maybe a future at 1B?
  8. Boggs up still leaves 12 bench players and 13 pitchers...do they stick with that till Hart comes back, or is do we have another move coming I wonder? Kintzler would certainly go down if another position player was brought up, but I don't know who that would be.
  9. It's nice to see a lot of people here are high on this deal, I was getting depressed reading some people's thoughts as to why its too risky to give him money when he'll be "regressing". I like this deal a lot. He may drop off a bit during those years he'll be making that money, but not to the point where he'll be a black hole in the lineup. In order to maintain success, you have to keep fans coming to the ballpark so you can afford other players. Free agents will say "hey, they have Ryan Braun, that's a name I know and a guy I wanna play with". It's an investment, and every investment has a risk, it's the type of move a small market has to take sometimes. For the fans, this is symbolic. Braun is the face of the franchise, he's a name people will know coming to a park every year. Right now, his name is linked with success. It is a sign that the Brewers are staying competitive and trying to win, and he'll probably still be a better hitter than half the guys in the league at 34. Awesome signing.
  10. That's true, and I wouldn't expect any different. I suppose what's more appealing about Kottaras is that he brings a power threat that Counsell and Morgan simply don't have, and Kotsay really hasn't shown much of recently. I'd say of those 4, George is a bigger HR threat and arguably the most likely to hit a double. Morgan could do it with his speed, but there's also a chance he won't be PH a lot once he's healthy again.
  11. Hence the word "somewhat". It's better than what Gomez, Betancourt, Counsell, and Almonte have brought so far (not to dig on Craig who isn't expected to be a big hitter and hasn't gotten nearly as many PA). In the perfect world, I would have rather had Boggs and Cruz over Almonte and Reed, and in an even more perfect world, I would have liked to see Kotsay get the boot when Hart got back. I think the organization has learned their lesson with the first 2, but unfortunately, I think we're stuck with Kotsay. It isn't a Brewers team without a gritty veteran to play way more than he should be.
  12. Exactly Ennder, Kottaras has proved thus far to be a valuable asset with the bat, and Lucroy has definitely taken a step forward on his D. I'm cringing far less every time someone throws a ball in the dirt. The unfortunate thing though is that we will be unable to use Kottaras as a PH a lot unless it's late innings and then putting him behind the plate, like the Braves do a lot with McCann (although he's better all around than George). But yeah, I'd let go of Nieves.
  13. I like that top 7, but I might put Scarpetta over Rivas based on talent. Before the year, I remember a lot of people saying they liked him to eventually surpass Peralta. Obviously, that won't be happening as long as Wily keeps dealing the way he has (save that crazy inning in this last start), but he still has a high ceiling and hopefully will start being more consistent with his outings. Thornburg is where he should be now, but I could see him pull an Odorizzi and make a big jump depending how his season goes.
  14. Toss me on the Mike Walker bandwagon, can never have enough 3B prospects. Kind of reminds me a little of Taylor Green's emergence, we'll see if he keeps hitting all season.
  15. And who is to say Boggs doesn't go the road of Reed and have a terrible 0-fer spell the way Reed did or the way Almonte has been going? Kotsay has been getting a lot of crap, but at least he's been hitting somewhat in his role. Can't say the same for a lot of others, Counsell included. Morgan has been the most effective bench player so far, but arguments will start as soon as he and Hart are healthy as to whether he should remain a "bench" player.
  16. Right, I guess IMO the importance for Rogers to throw strikes s that he hasn't shown to be as durable as either of those guys, although Unit had his fair share of injuries. We'll see how his season goes, as long as he's healthy it should be a productive one. And wow on Peralta, talk about a guy taking a step further.
  17. Hmm...'way outside' doesn't sound too comforting, was kind of hoping part of that was being squeezed. I mean, no matter what happens, he'll likely be in the majors based off his talent. It's just a matter of whether he'll be a starter or in the pen. I do wonder though if fatigue had anything to do with the consecutive walks he issued late though.
  18. An interesting start for Mark Rogers, everything looks good for him except those walks. The fact he's only 25 and is arguably still developing leaves some hope that he could yet improve on his command, but one has to wonder by how much. That said, the fact he was able to throw 97 pitches and get into the 6th is a good to see after the shoulder problem in spring, just frustrating that almost half were balls. I wasn't able to listen while he was throwing, did anyone catch what his velocity was?
  19. Scouting report says Roberts is good behind the dish, so good to see he's living up to expectations there. Would love to see some of that offensive potential surface, double today is a nice start.
  20. Komatsu wasn't listed on the injury report, was he? It's nice to see Morris and Kentrail off to a good start in Brevard though.
  21. Heck of a night for the T-Rats so far. Nicely pitched game by Ross, one mistake pitch, and an aggressive offense. Nick Shaw is picking up where he left off in the Arizona League.
  22. Trenni to the rescue... vs. LH in 2010 Morgan: 71 g, .200 avg, .280 OBP, 10 BB, 34 K Gomez: 48 g, .196a, .271OBP, 8BB, 26 K Doesn't necessarily justify batting Morgan up in the order, but you'd almost rather have him in against a lefty than Gomez since they're basically a wash. Their career numbers are on par with those too.
  23. Exactly, and with how poorly the bottom of the lineup has hit so far, you almost have to play the hot hand with Morgan just to open up scoring opportunities. I have no doubt Prince will get going soon, but without Hart, you need to take offense where you can get it. And so far, Kotsay hasn't looked good in the field or at the plate...
  24. Really? Was not aware Parra was actually on a schedule. Interesting though, do you know if Mitre has any options? I wonder if they're committed to him as a long reliever or whether they just want him for depth.
  25. I would assume when Hawkins gets back, one of the lefties (either Stetter or Braddock) would be optioned down. My take was that the whole idea of having two lefties to begin with was that Parra would also double as the long reliever, but injuries obviously changed those plans and left a door open for Stetter. The real question is when Parra will even be available again, and then would they choose to option Mitre, who I think still does have an option (correct me if I'm wrong). I agree on Estrada though, if he does well, no reason not to give him another start unless they think Mark Rogers will be ready and raring.
