  1. interesting watching Gameday's take on the pitching. Marmol has pitches 6 inches off the plate for called strikes (see Weeks AB) and Turnbow is getting all of the plate for balls apparently.
  2. I'm going to go on record now, since the Brewers won convincingly, so I feel now is a good time to make the point about my perception of misuse of the pen. Obviously Yost is in love with what Riske brings to the table for good enough reason. But you can only use your favorite relievers so much. Riske has averaged about 50 innings over his last 2 years and he has now pitched 3 in the first 2 games. In the first game, he pitched in some miserable conditions. There are pitchers in the pen right now that the teams needs to see in live action, to see what they have so that they have confidence in putting them in games when it counts. It also helps to keep Riske's innings down and to keep these pitchers "warm" If they go a week without pitching, it can mess with their confidence and they start pressing in games. What I've seen from Yost is a tendency to avoid using these pitchers in obvious situations (like tonight with a 6-run lead in the ninth), yet throw them in the fire after riding the pine for 2 weeks with a game on the line. Why waste Riske's arm and why not keep the other pitchers involved when the game is over.
  3. The problem with Cordero is that his agent really jerked the Brewers around. The Brewers offered him a record contract, but his agent allowed Cinci to just barely outbid them, and then told the Brewers that Cinci is offering more (without specifying it was pennies higher). The Brewers were not extended the same luxury of just inching the offer a little higher, but had to bid higher, so they just gave up and were stunned to see that Cinci just edged them out.
  4. the only chance Estrada would have had running down FDome is if FDome would have fallen to his knees laughing as the hillarity ensued.
  5. I've been believing Gwynn's minor league stats like most on here, that he won't be any good, but this team does need OBP guys with speed to drive in, and if he somehow improves beyond his projections (and some believe his pedigree could make that happen), with his defense, he could turn into our future CF. Now I didn't believe he had that capability, but he has shown a lot during spring training and last night. I'm officially on the fence I guess. Certainly the Brewers could get someone with better power numbers out there, but this lineup doesn't like power by any stretch, and they can invest in more pitching instead. I think LaPorta will likely replace Fielder and we will rotate LaPorta as the 4th OF and backup 1B next year.
  6. I've heard it thrown around on a certain Badger board that catcher ERA is a bad stat and there is no proof of calling a 'good game' (which I totally disagree with but dont want to sucked into a time-wasting stats argument). To me, one thing I noticed just from watching Estrada vs Miller is that Miller called a lot more 'setup' pitches and 'finishing' pitches, while Estrada didn't. At least that was my perception. Like Miller would get a lot of low and aways and then finish with the high heat. It really struck me that Estrada rarely used the high heat to finish off a batter that was lost. Was I imagining this?
  7. what happened to Z. At least a positive development there apparently.
  8. wow does prince look stiff out there
  9. one time through the lineup and the guys getting on base were Kendall, Gwynn, & Hall..go figure.
  10. Trenni is a little better than Ann Carrol, unless you are into the crackhead look. While we have time to waste, I dug up Trenni's blog: http://www.blogger.com/profile/09777132742054979186
  11. Dillon's sample size isn't small at all. Though he was out of baseball in '06, he averaged .340ish combined from '05 to '08, with 1.000ish OPS, all between AAA and the majors. In fact, looking at his numbers, his projection on HRs is way too low. He should get 5-10 in limited action.
  12. This is 100% a false statement. The white sox won a WS because their pitching all had career years at the same time. They scored fewer runs after the trade and Pods runs scored per game was in the bottom half for leadoff hitters. Prince (45)- It is hard to hit 50+ multiple years in a row. Braun (35-40) Hart (20-30) - Not sure how much of the power was for real Hardy (20-30) - Last year was not a fluke at all, he has hit HR at a 23 HR pace since the 2nd half of his rookie year. I don't know if there is a higher level in him or not but I expect something in the 20's. Weeks (15-25) Hall (15-25) Cameron (18-25) - Even with the suspension I expect him to break 20 HR in the friendly HR park. Rest of team (15-30) - Not much power with the rest of the team. I stand corrected. I remembered reading that and thought it made sense.
  13. either Yost or Melvin mentioned that if Hardy goes down, they wouldnt hesitate to grab Escobar from AA or AAA in the preseason. I think it was already the plan regardless of what he in spring training, that he would start in AA and work though the progression.
  14. Locking up Braun long-term would show an unprecedented commitment to the fans and to the players. It would be a big number, and would give Braun long-term security. It would give the organization additional "discounted" years. Locking up Prince would be risky. He can only play one position (IF THAT, long term). Based on his agent, you are paying a premium. He is not the fan-friendly player Braun is, who is concerned about the community and the welfare of the organization. It seems like "he just wants his". To me its Javon Walker vs Ahman Green or Donald Driver. Braun seems more cerebral and a student of the game, while Prince is all about the bombs and the money. Wait til the end of his contract is near and trade for top prospects, or let him walk in free agency and get some top sandwich picks. I'm just not worried about keeping him, especially with LaPorta on deck.
  15. I would lock up Braun first in a heartbeat. He isn't a Boras guy, he should be cheap enough due to the increased risk and unknowns, is much less of an injury risk, seems to be every bit as talented in hitting (less power, better consistency), has better speed, plays a tougher position, incredible work ethic, is more committed to the fans and the team I feel. I really think Braun is the future face of the organization.
  16. Last year, the Crew dominated with 231 dingers to lead all teams. 3 NL teams led the race. How will this year compare and does anyone compete with them? Prince (50)- should be in the same vicinity..more ABs, more protection Braun (40-45) - didn't play in a quarter of the season..hit 44 last year between AAA & MLB Hart (25-30) - full time starter Hardy (25) - can he stay healthy & regain his stroke Weeks (20-25) - needs to stay healthy Hall (20-25) full-time; more comfortable position Cameron (15-20) - will miss some PT Gross (5-10) - depends on PT Kendall/Rivera (5) Pitchers (5) Gwynn (0-5) Dillon (0-5) Counsell (0-5) Kapler (0-5) Basically, it looks to me like 210-260 range..maybe a little better than last year. Which kind of begs the question if it really is necessary to have the much power in the lineup. The ChiSox struggled as a result of excess power and though it seemed like the Brewers fleeced them for Carlos Lee, they won the WS partly by getting someone (Podsednick) on the bases to drive in. Only Braun and Dillon put up great averages, but that's another conversation.
  17. I'd take Braun, but I agree with Bushie in the sense that i felt Yo should have been used in some pinch hit situations last year.
  18. 1. I fault him for not firing Yost yet. What is he waiting for. 2. I went thinking top 3 GMs in baseball before last year to probably top 10, due to the most recent trades he's made last year. 3. Someone mentioned he got fleeced in getting Linebrink for those 3 pictchers. While the deal looks poor right now, you neglected to mention that the Crew gets high draft picks also.
  19. I really like this move after seeing they will pocket the $3MM. Obviously, Vargas showed last year that he was unable to help this club, and his low innings really hurt the team. He wasn't in the top 6 (Bush is 6th when Yo returns) and maybe not even top 7 (Narveson). If 2 pitchers down for the Crew, did they really want to use use Vargas in a pinch? No. Either some minor leaguer will emerge (Narveson) or they will trade for a playoff run, in which case they would want to upgrade anyways. Chances are, someone is going to want to dump salary, in which case they can use Vargas' $3M and get something out of it they can use.
  20. at what point are we allowed to worry about the big cash in our pitching staff.. Gagne & Suppan?
  21. kapler over dillon? hard to believe. I know Munson has the hot bat spring, how's his defense at C. Is anyone else even challenging?
  22. I'm in. Brother has asked me to drive down for that game.
  23. I think you meant to say: I drinking we can gallardo moving into Suppan #2 spot before long
  24. wow, excellent read! If you got anything else, keep it coming!
