  1. Good opportunity for the Pirates to shed some potentially unnecessary payroll. One random observation, as of right now Ivan Nova is set to make nearly $2 million MORE than the Brewers highest paid pitcher (and possibly much more if he qualifies for his starts and innings pitched incentives).
  2. If the Brewers sign Daniel Murphy to a two year deal I hope they are either 1) convinced he has some positional flexibility to also play 1B and maybe even occasionally 3B, or 2) have made up their mind Keston Hiura is going to be part of a trade package for another big piece. I have been among Keston’s biggest fans since before he was even in the Brewers organization, but at present there isn’t a single place on the diamond for him outside of 2B. You simply can’t carry two players chained down to second base only on the 25 man roster for a significant portion of the season. Even if they had no intentions of calling him up this season, it would cause a strange situation for 2020. I guess they could make the deal with the idea of eventually trading Daniel Murphy, but that doesn’t seem like the Brewers M.O.

  4. While I agree that Kikuchi is very unlikely to sign with the Brewers, I wouldn’t say the chances are down to 0% just yet (insert Dumb & Dumber GIF). Two things of notes: 1) Some reports have indicated that Kikuchi is willing to play for any MLB team regardless of their geographical location. Sure, maybe that’s just a leverage play. 2) Stearns said the Brewers have an extensive history scouting Kikuchi. Again, I would still bet on him signing elsewhere, and the West coast teams are probably the actual favorites, but yes... I’m saying there is still a chance.
  5. I think the financials are being somewhat overstated as a potential road block. I believe the Brewers have budgeted money to spend on pitching when the time is right. I don't think they have a fixed salary threshold etched in stone. With the last two years of Kluber's contract being team options subject to buyout the risk is significantly mitigated. Obviously you hope to get three great years from Kluber, but if something catastrophic occurs you can pay the $1 million buyout and rid yourself of the financial commitment. That is a good framework to start with for a club that can't afford to be sunk with multiple years of dead money.
  6. They announced some additional games today (beyond what was posted previously)...
  7. There is a planned announcement later today at the Winter Meetings that Sunday Night Baseball is going to get moved to 6:00pm CT. I think that is certainly an improvement from a viewership standpoint. Here is the full article link: ESPN to Start Sunday Night Baseball Games Earlier in 2019 As far as ESPN Sunday night games I have seen announced thus far, here is the list... Braves at Phillies (March 31) Dodgers at Rockies (April 7) Red Sox at Yankees (June 2) Dodgers at Red Sox (July 14) Yankees at Red Sox (July 28) Red Sox at Yankees (August 4) Cubs vs. Pirates - Williamsport, PA (August 18) I am curious to see if the Brewers are selected for a Sunday Night Baseball date. History says it’s unlikely, but coming off an 96 win season and an NLCS appearance it seems at least possible.
  8. Always look forward to your player valuation posts, thanks for sharing!
  9. Yes, the link to the tweet you’re referencing is included at the bottom of the initial Trevor Bauer post. For those that have not clicked on it, the exact wording is:”Hearing brewers are in intense talks for Trevor Bauer. They’ve called about Kluber but they demand Keston.” As others have pointed out it’s best to take every rumor with a grain of salt, but it did at least come from someone who was acknowledged by Rosenthal for getting the specific details of the Moustakas trade correct hours before the national media.
  10. One possible connection when it comes to the Brewers potentially having interest in Trevor Bauer is the Brewers are working towards significant improvements in their sports sciences infrastructure which includes some similarities with Bauer’s partnership with Driveline. Both the Brewers and Driveline were featured in this article by Eno Sarris of The Athletic this week, The next ‘Moneyball’ is already happening all around us, in the Wild West of player development. The article includes the following passage, “There’s also a renewed emphasis on spending on hardware like digital cameras, wearable technology, portable tracking systems and other data-collection devices, as the Astros have done. The Brewers, for example, will debut a new spring facility next year that boasts a sport science lab that will collect data on their players as they practice and play.” The article goes on to detail Driveline’s attempts to use the data-driven research for player performance improvements. The article doesn’t name Bauer specifically, but he has a long and well advertised relationship with Driveline. Certainly could be nothing more than grasping at straws, but since the Brewers are a few months away from opening a 4,ooo+ square foot sports science lab maybe there is something enticing about bringing in a player that has fully embraced the use of similar technology and science.
  11. For me it is Bauer since it is two years of control versus just one, and I also would bet on Bauer having a better season next year than I would on Bumgarner away from the Bay and working with reduced stuff. Even if the Indians trade Bauer they would still have Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco, Mike Clevinger, Danny Salazar, and Shane Bieber to fill out the rotation with top prospect Triston McKenzie likely starting the season at Triple-A. Assuming some injuries occurred to those starters, Davies would likely be considered among the next tier of starting pitching options for the Indians which also includes Adam Plutko and Cody Anderson. Not that they couldn’t use Davies when injuries inevitably occur, but I don’t think they are going to place much value on him in any trade since he would be more of an insurance piece than anything.
  12. The Brewers list of Spring Training Non-Roster Invitees is now at four... RHP Deolis Guerra C Tuffy Gosewisch LHP Angel Perdomo IF Jake Hager
  13. There continues to be plenty of smoke surrounding rumors the Indians are going to trade a starting pitcher this offseason. Let’s assume for a moment the starter the Indians trade is RHP Trevor Bauer. I don’t personally care for Bauer’s antics, but he is a top starting pitcher in his late-20’s with two years of control remaining. A recent MLB.com article, 5 potential trade scenarios for Bauer, Kluber, listed the following trade proposal... Questions... 1) Do you want the Brewers to trade for Trevor Bauer? 2) If yes, what type of offer do you think it would realistically take for the Brewers to acquire Bauer? Lastly, the individual credited as being the first person to publicly share the details of the Moustakas trade sent this Tweet earlier this evening.

  16. To be fair I think the people you are referring to are a very small number of posters. Mainly the thread is a cornucopia of synonyms for “relax”. I’m surprised this thread has made it to 5-pages in just a few days, but here we are.
  17. Longtime Brewers Front Office member Zack Minasian, most recently the Brewers Special Advisor to the GM for Scouting (and previously the Brewers Director of Pro Scouting), is leaving to become the Pro Scouting Director of the San Francisco Giants. Announcement made per Tweet from Andrew Baggarly. Baggarly’s Article for The Athletic includes the following excerpt:
  18. Sad news... Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo Are Killed in Car Crash They had played in this Venezuelan Winter League game at University Stadium in Caracas prior to the accident. Current Brewers playing in the eight team Venezuelan Winter League include Orlando Arcia and Jesus Aguilar. Current Brewers prospect Troy Stokes played in the league earlier this off-season and sent out this Tweet referencing the tragedy.
  19. Why does MLB Trade Rumors currently say the following?... Obviously a typo, but they had me for second.
  20. Slightly younger than that, Goldschmidt turned 31 this past September.
  21. It often depends on additional factors such as position scarcity as well as the type of needs and valuation system of the potential trade partner. Over the past year the Pirates (i.e. Gerrit Cole trade) and now Diamondbacks have made deals where they appeared to value major league ready role players. Other teams such as the Padres (i.e. Brad Hand trade) have taken less quantity while receiving a top prospect in return. I do think top prospects currently carry as much trade value right now as ever. Also, I think the trio of young pitchers often mentioned (Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta) would carry a good amount of trade value among the teams that favor major league ready pieces in return.
  22. Goldschmidt gave the Diamondbacks 40.1 WAR for a career earnings total of just $31 million. One reason I think the Cardinals may indeed be able to re-sign him is he may value certainty over the risk of waiting for a potential mega deal next off-season. I hope he doesn’t sign with them, but the amount of money St. Louis may offer him in a contract extension this off-season could be life changing for him and enough to entice him to bypass waiting for FA. If the Cardinals don’t re-sign him they will get a compensation draft pick if he turns down the qualifying offer and signs elsewhere, so that will help negate the loss of the draft pick in this trade.
  23. Good article on David Peralta from The Athletic, Trade value and upside: Breaking down David Peralta’s 2018 power surge. The story includes a couple of graphs with Peralta’s year-by-year statistics including the second displaying his Slugging and ISO. The article also points out that Peralta has one of the most quiet and simple swings in baseball, especially for someone who is hitting for a good amount of left-handed power. Peralta Swing Video Peralta is not a swing change or launch angle guy, but he has been improving his quality of contact. He is at the top of the leader boards when it comes to exit velocity and according to the article, “in 2018, he had 34 barrels out of 438 balls in play and 45.7 percent of his batted balls were hit at 95mph or above.” The article also goes on to point out that he increased his power versus southpaws last season. Not mentioned in the article, but Baseball Prospectus’ new DRC+ stat had Peralta as one of the 40 best hitters in baseball (in terms of deserved runs created) last season among players with 400+ plate appearances.
  24. If the Diamondbacks are looking for a roster reset I am curious if they would be willing to move the final two years of outfielder David Peralta. I know outfield isn’t the first thing that comes to mind in terms of need for the Brewers, but the lefty hitting Peralta is very good against right-handed pitchers. It would give the Brewers another very good left-handed bat in the lineup. It would also reduce the pressure of relying on Braun’s health throughout the season. Thoughts? Also potentially available is starting LHP Robbie Ray who also has just two years of control remaining. In addition to major league ready players with years of control it seems like the Diamondbacks are interested in accumulating draft picks to go with the one they added for losing Patrick Corbin (and maybe another one for losing A.J. Pollock). I think the Brewers could put together an intriguing offer for either player.
  25. I miss last offseason when it seemed like the majority of National League teams weren’t that interested in improving their teams.
