  1. this whole idea of low minor pitchers being "blocked" is really not an issue. By the time they are developed enough to be in the majors there will be room for them, or you can trade them at a premium. Of course, parra might be an exception to that rule if he doesn't go north with the big club.
  2. I posted this elsewhere, but.... Since H4H builds homes, and thus there is a lot of carpentry work involved... Jesus=Jewish Carpenter=Messiah Braun=Hebrew Hammer=? I'm just saying...
  3. if we are talking long-term, I think Vargas will be a bartender somewhere in the caribbean. just a hunch.
  4. Vargas is the perfect #6 starter, in my mind, or would be if he is cheaper. Problem is, there are 7 guys ahead of him, as far as I'm concerned. I think Vargas has a good shot to be on the opening day roster, but that will require an injury or two and/or trade or two to other starters. Livan got $5m, Vargas at $3.6 doesn't seem that bad for a team wanting a 5th starter.
  5. They could have put a package for Santana together but Santana would have used his no trade clause because we wouldn't be able to give him the extension he wanted. good point. I didn't think of that.
  6. dillon had a herniated disk in his back that was surgically-repaired. I don't know if they fused vertebrae or what. He probably wasn't **fully** recovered before 2005 or 2006.
  7. If Gwynn starts out like he did last year, he could well have a BA of .320 and OBP of .400 or so by the time Cameron comes back. I started a thread on this topic a month or so ago.
  8. Dillon is a special case. He had a physical problem which was fixed, medically. He's no where near a typical 32-year old minor leaguer who raked in AAA.
  9. In retrospect, you don't do the linebrink trade. Period. At the time it was entirely appropriate as it was an attempt to win the division, but since that failed, you can view the trade as a failure. Unfortunately we live in the here and now rather than "retrospect land". So, what happens if the brewers didn't do that trade? They would have more chips available to acquire someone. They still wouldn't have a prospect like Jones to get Bedard, they still wouldn't have a prospect like Maybin to get Cabrera. They could have put together a package as good as MN got for Santana, but he'd clearly be a rental for the brewers. As far as the long-term impact for the organization and the team, I think it's close to a wash, but that depends, obviously, on how inman, garrison, and thatcher progress from here forward, and who the brewers pick with the compensatory selections.
  10. I can't believe Nunez is on the OD roster, unless an infielder is injured to start the season.
  11. katin is 25. if he only gets $1500 for 7 months, that's a lot less than your $1200 for 12 months. And I'm sure you did get "comp'ed"--tuition and all goods and services that go along with it, such as cheap entertainment, health care and food available at school. $1500 a month for someone who would otherwise be in college seems quite reasonable. For someone who wants to live as a real adult human being, it's not nearly enough. And Katin was a late-round pick so he probably didn't get much of a bonus.
  12. I was thinking of Sheets and Gallardo hitting. It would be neat if the home team could decide whether the game is played with a DH or not. Sheets pitching--DH! Gallardo pitching--Let him hit! oh, and Parra is a good hitting pitcher, too.
  13. minor leaguers still get a per diem, don't they? that should take care of food. I can't believe they aren't comp'ed bats and gloves by the manufacturers.
  14. that is more of a preparation to move Suppan when his no-trade clause ends.
  15. the brewers need for sheets past 2008 will be determined by how well he and the other starters perform.
  16. hernandez will still be an innings-eater, imo. I'm surprised he lasted this long. He was one of the TWO B-type free agent starting pitchers; Glavine was the A.
  17. seems like it would be a good investment to give some of those late draft picks $20k or so to live off during the offseason. They could concentrate on conditioning, etc. Or, have dormitories in AZ where they could stay.
  18. cueto and votto might not be overpaying. I'm not sure how cueto projects.
  19. there is a wide continuum between making a single trade for short-term interests and the binge and purge history of the Marlins. Just seemed another one-year guy could help level out the salary for the team, since all the young guys are starting to hit arbitration and their salaries will be increasing. Burnett seemed to be an obvious choice to me since the jays aren't going to get to the playoffs this year and he is available for the right price. Other players are in similar positions.
  20. You're not stupid. At least not on this issue.
  21. I hope Parra is performing well in MLB....I'm not certain what stats are considered for starting pitchers. Tom Glavine was the sole A-class starter, with Livan Hernandez and Freddy Garcia being the B's this year (how is a rubber-arm like Livan still without a contract?). Sheets rate stats would clearly put him in the A category. If Sheets is doing well and healthy in 2008, he'll probably end up an A. If he's not, there won't be many clubs desiring him.
  22. why not try to make a "big" trade that will increase the chance of winning the division, even if it is acquiring a rental player like AJ Burnett for someone we could have longer-term? Trade Capuano and a 10-ish prospect or two for Burnett? Never really know which year will be our best bet to win something significant. Don't want to let it pass by without doing whatever it takes to win. Maybe let the season play out for awhile, then acquire someone to fill an exposed need?
  23. that would mean a guy that had a .400/.400/.800 OBP/SLG/OPS would be as valuable (.400x1.75 + .400=1.100) as a guy that had a .320/.540/.860 (.320*1.75 + .540 = 1.100). hmm. I'd kinda like to have both kinds of guys in my lineup. this is just an observation.
  24. that $1500 a month seems low, but I'm only basing it on my memory of what the minor league portion of the contracts of major league veterans are. I thought a goodly number make six figure salaries in the minors.
  25. I don't think so. There isn't that much of a house margin.
