  1. bush and capuano certainly are "stepping down" and trying to give their slots away. Suppan-bad. Vargas has been so-so. Sheets and Parra stellar--maybe Villy, depending how this outing goes.
  2. I wonder if some guys just need to change approach every once in awhile. Maddox has refined a few nuggets for us, but I wonder if a couple of our guys need to be nuggets for someone else. different pitching coach, new chance, get success.
  3. on the ESPN board last season, someone was trying to argue that home runs were rally killers.
  4. just wanted to say one more thing. If parra was some fragile thing, more is the reason to make use of him now before he shatters. I happen to believe most of that is behind him. This is not the spring of 2007 which followed a year where he had severe restrictions placed on him. His restrictions last year were minor or nonexistant; he just happened to break a thumb in a freak accident that shut him down. His restrictions in 2008 are such that he isn't likely to reach them.
  5. If you have one guy that can make 25 starts and have an era of 3.3 and two other guys that can make 35 starts and have an era of 4.95, you make sure the first guy gets his 25 starts. Period. It's not like you can't have those other two guys on the roster, or move them up when needed.
  6. the argument in my mind is that Parra is head and shoulders better. He can excel right now in the majors. He's got the stuff and makeup. He's wasted too much time on minor league DL. While I think Villanueva can be a very solid middle of the rotation starter for many years, I don't think he represents a significantly better chance to win right now than bush and cappy (and I expect at least one and probably both to bounce back a good bit). Some people love Villy and will think Ned and Doug are idiots if he isn't in the rotation. They will have a kiniption if he starts at Nashville. While I think he's clearly one of the 12 best pitchers, I wouldn't fret too much if he spent a month in Nashville. One of those older relievers will prove to be useless or get injured soon enough. So it really all depends on how you rank the 8 starters (I think we can come to a consensus that Sheets and Gallardo are the top two and Vargas is #8). Placing the other 5 is a case of constant argument. An argument that seems to get us nowhere.
  7. maybe the rockies will let us use their humidor? we can keep him all dewy fresh in there. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. If Parra's elbow falls off after pitching 30 innings, I'd rather those innings were helping the brewers rather than the sounds. I think it unlikely he has a severe injury, though. The 165 innings as a #5 starter isn't just my opinion, it's based on looking at stats for several years.
  9. hard for me to put much credibility into this when so many teams jump 10 or more places in one year. It suggests the brewers will fall next year, but doesn't consider the suppl. picks they will have.
  10. just for my information, for the people that want to send parra down, do they consider him one of the three top starters in ability? If they are like me and think he's no worse than third, and a whole lot better than the fourth, do they still want to send him down?
  11. I had thought that both inman and garrison were in SD top 10's by other sources.
  12. when I played ball as a kid, getting back into the routine of fielding came later than swinging the bat.
  13. Let's just say for a second that the Brewers win the division and Parra is on a hot streak through August and September, and hits 165 innings before the playoffs start. Then what do you do? Simply put, the season is a marathon rather than a sprint. That sums it up very well. Parra will be a major contributor this year- just maybe not until July or so. simply put, there is no better place to limit Parra's innings than in Milwaukee. As a 5th starter he just IS NOT going to surpass 165 innings (also the reason why Buchholz is going to be the 5th guy in BOS) UNLESS he is just outstanding (ROY, All-star), and you CAN NOT say you wouldn't want that production in milwaukee. Plenty of guys have been closed down during a pennant chase, if you have to do it. Granted, it depends on how you value the other starters. I happen to think that Sheets, Gallardo and Parra are far above everyone else. Then comes Suppan, just because you can count on the innings from him. Then comes Bush, Capuano and Villanueva. Then comes Vargas who won't give you a lot of innings nor will he give you great production.
  14. yeah, we got the good turnbow today. I think he got three outs on 3 pitches. I know the first two were.
  15. His brother Why can't I be in one of those families with two brothers playing professional sports??? well, you could if you had the right genes. Compare the length of your index finger to the length of your ring finger. Athletic studs like me have considerably longer ring fingers.
  16. that was marcus t. this is matt t. I think
  17. I knew I shouldn't have mentioned jackson's nice start. the error didn't help.
  18. MLB.com is probably behind considerably, but z. jackson has a couple innings of no hit ball. It would be nice if he could be a credible starter by the end of the year.
  19. yeah, you'll probably have 30 guys or more on the roster before callups, but isn't there sense in having the ones you think are the best 25 on the roster?
  20. first, why is this on the TRANSACTIONS board? second, insulin can be a PED, but it's used by bodybuilders to lean out. However, if he's really fat that TOTALLY supports the diabetes case. It's insensitive to blame a guy with diabetes for getting fat. It's not in his best interest, clearly, but they often happen together.
  21. A 5th starter will usually have under 30 starts and 160 innings. I don't think there is any reason to worry about him going over 165 innings, unless he is putting up ROY numbers, and if he is, don't you want him to be doing that in MIL rather than NASH? They can always close him down for a start or two.
  22. I guess nunez is only capable of getting on by an error, but still brought the runs home.
  23. I think nunez is obligated to hit a HR after committing an error. Isn't that a rule for ST games for brewer 3b?
