  1. What do you expect exactly. Doug Davis is garbage and always has been. Narveson gets to picth middle relief and Manny is the last man on the staff while Davis and Suppan are entrenched in the rotation. Blame Melvin and dopey Macha for this mess.
  2. I dont like saying this but I think Hart is done as a productive major leaguer. A few years ago I thought he had the potential to do what Jayson Werth is doing now but at this point I see his career becoming more like Austin Kearns.
  3. I would definitely extend him since I think we can get a good deal and Rickie still has what it takes to be an elite offensive player. As for Lawrie the scouting reports regarding his defense have been negative to say the least. He most likely will end up an outfielder and will most likely be below average at any position.
  4. Other than Lawrie and Gamel do we have anyone else with the potential to become an elite offensive player. I see a clear lack of bats in our system and think we really need to focus on elite hitters in this years draft. I love our minor league pitching depth but offense looks like a problem.
  5. I cant rip on Zaun too much because at least he is not Kendall but he really does look awful.
  6. I said this in the offseason and I will say it again; our offense is appreciably weaker than it was last season and Gomez is worthless.
  7. I did want to sign Hardy but at the time I wanted to trade Escobar for pitching and keep Hardy. Most importantly I wanted the Brewers to make a choice between the two and trade the other shortstop for a top of the line starting pitcher. The last thing I wanted to do was keep both Escobar and Hardy as one of the two would have been great bait for starting pitching. Hardy had two years before free agency and was coming off a great year so I wanted the team to lock him up and trade Alcides who was and still is considered a top shortstop prospect. The worst decision was to hold onto both and not maximize the fact that we had two good shortstops while most teams dont have any. Melvin had to make this decision last offseason to get the most for whoever he was trading. I believe that Melvin had decided that Escobar was his shortstop for 2010 and beyond so he should have traded Hardy last offseason and signed a stop gap to share the position with Counsell last season. By waiting that extra year we were short in starting pitching for 2009 and were forced to sell low on Hardy whom had a bad year.
  8. Its called maximizing your assets. Melvin knew that we werent keeping Hardy past last season and that we needed started pitching so he should have moved that asset at its peak instead of selling at the bottom. Part of being a GM is having the ability to look past the upcoming season and doing whats best to keep your team competitive every year. That means trading players that wont be around long term before you are left settling for a guy like Gomez who has shown no ability whatsoever to hit major league pitching. Melvin continues to take the easy way out in regards to pitching. Instead of dealing for a fantastic pitcher like Vazquez or taking a chance on a true power arm in Morrow he would rather overspend on a decent but not great pitcher like Wolf and continue to overspend on the bullpen when we have guys like Axford and Braddock waiting in the wings at minimal cost. Now we are most likely tapped out financially and have to hope that Mulder can pitch again after several seasons off or that Suppan wont be as bad as he has been. Melvin has blown chance after chance to acquire top notch pitching like Vazquez or young power arms like Morrow.
  9. Melvin just doesnt know how to maximize his resources. He waited too long on Hardy and as a result traded him for way less than his previous years value. He has also held onto Hart too long and now it seems that he has no value. Its pretty likely that McGehee turns into a pumpkin in 2010 and that commodity will be worthless. Melvin is the guy that sold the market at 6500 and bought it before it tanked at 14000. When has Doug ever sold high on one of our players and bought low on someone elses. The Podsednik for Lee trade was a good example of this but I just havent seen any others. It takes very little creativity to pay LaTroy Hawkins close to 4 mil per year or pay Wolf 10 mil per season when we could have had him the year before for little more than half that. Clearly the Suppan and Hall deals have hurt us badly but its other moves like paying middle relievers Hawkins and Riske big money that has hurt us as well. Teams with our payroll limitations cant go out and spend more than 15 million on the bullpen and then say they dont have money for bigger needs like starting pitching.
  10. There are always excuses as to why we add mediocre talent like Wolf while an ace like Vazquez gets traded for a bunch of fluff. Melvin always takes the easy way out signing the average free agents like Wolf and Hawkins instead of making a trade to acquire a far better pitcher. This offseason has been a huge disappointment thus far and that likely wont change. We have marginally improved our rotation while we have weakned our lineup significantly by replacing Cameron with Gomez. I just dont see how this team is better right now than it was when we ended the 2009 season. If Melvin hadnt decided to spend 15 million plus on our bullpen we could have had enough money for two starting pitchers instead of one plus a extreme long shot like Mulder. Listen if Vazquez was traded for meaningful value I wouldnt complain but when the headliner of the deal is Melky Cabrera all I can do is scratch my head in disbelief. Seriously cabrera isnt even as good as Corey Hart and Im sure a deal with Hart/McGehee, Odorizzi and Coffey would have been a far better haul than what Atlanta recieved.
  11. Good thing Melvin is off in Spain while a great pitcher gets traded for garbage. The Brewers could have easily beaten this offer without including Gamel. Id really love to know what the appeal is with Melky Cabrera. Once again Melvin is showing that he is overmatched. The reason we dont have enough money to add a good starting pitcher is because Doug insists on having a 15 million dollar bullpen. Trades like this just have me scratching my head. We could have offered a package of Hart/McGehee and an A ball pitcher like Odorizzi plus a bullpen arm like Coffey and that would have been a far better package than what Atlanta received. Maybe Melvin did offer more than Hart but I just find it hard to believe that we couldnt beat this extremely underwhelming package. Melvin just seems to have no creativity whatsoever when it comes to improving this team.
  12. The only way I would make a Halladay deal is if we had a long term deal in place with him. If we can get him signed I would be willing to give up Gamel/Lawrie, Parra and a minor league arm.
  13. I think the decision to not offer Lopez arbitration is ridiculous. At 5 mil for one year he wouldnt have exactly killed our budget and odds are he will find at least a 2 yr deal. This decision may mean that the budget will be real tight do to the economy. Look around baseball and you will see very few guys offered arbitration. I think we are in for a long offseason because I dont see us aquiring the top of the rotation SP we need and the offense looks much weaker than last season as well. I expect this offseason in baseball to be like last years where only the top guys get big money and the rest are just happy to get one year deals. Looks like most of baseball is in belt tightening mode and the Brewers sure look like they are headed in that direction.
  14. Nice pickup for depth and if its means Kendall is gone all the better.
  15. We got Butler from Tampa for Gabe Gross.
  16. Can you imagine how long our games could be with Davis followed by Vargas in the same game. We could really set records for longest 9 inning games if those two pitch for us in the same game.
  17. Melvin is really in a tough spot here. Lackey is really the only top of the rotation free agent so a team in a large market will probably overpay for him and the rest of the free agents are bottom of the rotation types. The real intriguing free agents are guys like Sheets and Harden who have huge upside but carry substantial injuury risks with them. Assuming we dont sign Lackey we will probably be forced to overpay for mediocrity or take big risks with the injured guys and who knows how that will turn out.
  18. How about McGehee and Butler for jackson. Detroit can get a cost controlled third baseman to replace Inge who is also on the block as well as a potential young arm in Butler.
  19. Im happy with this move. There is no reason to pay that much money for a replacement level pitcher. I think there is a better than good chance that Narveson can better Loopers output at a fraction of the cost.
  20. I was told by a friend who works in another organization that Harang was offered for Hardy but that Melvin didnt want to trade JJ inside the division. Since my friend doesnt work for the Brewers or Reds who know for sure if its true but the guy is tuned in.
  21. Hardy would have been a nice start to getting Jackson. With so few quality shortstops on the market I find it hard to believe that Gomez was the best we could get for JJ.
  22. If we dont have any real flexibility to add difference makers maybe we ought to think about rebuilding. Adding the likes of Davis and Washburn may keep us around .500 but really wont be enough to contend with. With that in mind we should try to sign Prince long term and if that fails we might be better off trading him now. The last thing we should do is try to tread water knowing that the window has closed.
