  1. I don't think it will take 5-7 years given a motivated owner. I do think we will have some great draft picks in 2014-2015 and maybe 2016 and it'll be fun watching those ballplayers develop (unless Mark A trades them for CC Sabathia in 2015!)
  2. I was going to add, and this might pertain more to hitting than pitching. Most organizations simply don't invest enough in hitting instruction period. You have 15 hitters on a minor league team, and 1 hitting coach with one roving minor league instructor. Between games and travel there are maybe a few hours to get in cage time and BP. For 15 players. That is about 8 minutes a piece. These kids need 30-60 minutes of daily one on one instruction to correct their mechanics and they simply aren't getting it. On the pitching side there are similar issues with everyone getting in their bullpens and workouts. They might have more 1 on 1 time with the pitching coach than the hitters but it usually isn't enough.
  3. What frustrates me the most is that they weren't willing to complete the "going for it" mentality. They didn't win the Rafael Furcal sweepstakes and thought it was just fine to go with Yuni B at SS. They didn't see the problem with Wolf/Marcum and get another pitcher. Those 2 things would have really helped. If you are going to mortgage the future and go for it at least go all the way.... of course Roenicke might've screwed it all up anyways.... Arg!!!!
  4. I've been developing a few contacts among ex-pro ballplayers as Coaching in baseball is something I plan on pursuing as a career (more than likely at the High School & College level), and from what I understand what Hendrickson's Dad was saying is certainly not exclusive to the Brewers' organization and not exclusive to pitching either (the same is true with Hitters). I have much more expertise in hitting mechanics than pitching but I've heard similar stories from ex-pitchers too. Rare is the MLB organization that is all on the same page in terms of mechanics/philosophy and how to teach it and most importantly that invests the time to teach it. The organizations that really get that together are often the ones that excel. The Braves in the late 80's/early 90's and the Cardinals of the last decade are good examples of that. The crazy reality is that oftentimes players get way more individualized instruction in college than in the minors. On the flip side sometimes players do have all kinds of things wrong with their mechanics and fixing one thing reveals another flaw and that may have been the case with Hendrickson. I don't know Some of that is needed. That 4 seamer that hits 94/95 on the radar gun in college is going to get crushed in MLB. A lot of these college pitchers need to adjust and start throwing 90-92 2 seamers with movement. I think that is in part what is going on with Bradley/Jungman
  5. In terms of Lucroy, it just really depends on what is offered. Coulter is unlikely to ever be an MLB catcher. He'll probably play a different position if he can get his hitting together enough to even play MLB. He's only 19 years old so time will tell. Maldonado can certainly handle being a starting MLB catcher. And I say that with the knowledge that he is hitting .172 in the small sample of this season But anyways, Lucroy wouldn't be one of the main guys I'd trade. I would trade: Ramirez, Gallardo, Hart, Lohse, Aoki, Weeks (even just for salary relief), Axford, K-Rod, Henderson
  6. That is exactly correct. And it will be fascinating to see what the Brewers will do about it. The 3 main options are: 1) Mortgage the future even deeper by continuing to try to add significant pieces by trading away the best prospects in an attempt to contend this year or next year. (This year sure seems unlikely, and it is doubtful that we have the prospects anymore to pull off the Sabathia or Greinke type trades) 2) Stand pat, give the company line about "injuries and key players underperforming", make a few coaching changes, add another Kyle Lohse/Jeff Suppan type pitcher and another Aramis Ramirez type hitter and try to contend next season 3) Rebuild. Rebuild the coaching staff, be sellers at the trade deadline. Trade veterans for prospects
  7. No worries, we'll just trade Hellweg & Bradley for Mark Kotsay, and send Gennett, Morris & Jimmy Nelson to the Giants for Barry Zito....
  8. Maybe the Giants will trade us Barry Zito for Scooter Gennett, Hunter Morris, and our best prospect pitcher....
  9. Mark Kotsay is batting .286 this year for the Padres, I bet Doug is working the phones, trying to bring back our missing link CF
  10. If it makes you feel better, I'm pretty indifferent about him
  11. Go Brewers! I mean, Go Braves! Nice to see Bianchi hitting well
  12. While I agree that it's unlikely that kind of deal will occur, I certainly don't think it's idiotic to entertain the notion of potentially trading any player. I mean, in Braun, a team would be netting one of the top 5(?) hitters in the game, who happens to be signed for essentially the rest of his career at really reasonable rates. You never know what some GM out there might be willing to part with to add him. I'd take Strasburg & Harper for Braun. 3 years of Strasburg plus 5 of Harper (before they each go join the Yankees) would be cool But no way would the Nationals do that
  13. Because of the 2nd Wild-Card, teams are much less likely to trade players at the deadline anymore, which puts the Brewers in a strong position to rebuild their farm system if they go ahead and trade Gallardo, Lohse, Weeks, Ramirez, Axford, K-Rod, Hart in July. Simple supply & demand and the lack of "supply" (less teams being willing to sell at the deadline) could elevate those player's worth and return Unfortunately, Mark A is not likely to approve such a thing. And that is a big part of the problem with this franchise
  14. Good article on Ackley http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/22321401/wedge-all-wet-sabremetrics-isnt-behind-ackley-slump-he-just-lost-his-way
  15. Well Dustin Ackley has never actually played one inning of 3B in professional baseball. He has been mostly a league average fielder at 2B He was a 1st round pick and highly prized and certainly has potential to be better than Bianchi. There is every reason to believe that Scooter Gennett could be as good or a lot better than Ackley (and Scooter is 2 years younger) but aquiring Ackley and correcting what is going on with him could help the Crew. He's better than Yuni B that is for sure
  16. Trust me, I'm not real big on the Brewers current farm system, but I do like those players. The exciting thing about Morris is that he has really improved his walk rate while retaining or developing power. His age 24 season he is showing more power than Gamel did at age 24. LaPorta at age 24 had 17 HR's in 93 games. Morris has 10 in 44 games so far this year (both in AAA ball) I like Scooter. A lot. He has hit for average at every level. Now, I'm enough of a stats-geek to realize that BA is not a very good stat, but he is putting up a .347 OBP in addition to his .305 I do get the comparison to Tony Gwynn Jr: Tony put up similar numbers in his age 23 season as Scooter is putting up now (and Tony had a lot more stolen bases and better defense) I think Scooter will give the Brewers quality at-bats and help the team as a left handed batter in the lineup. I think he projects to do better as a MLB hitter than Gwynn did. I really like Scooter's mechanics and approach at the plate. I think he can consistently hit .300/.340/.720 at the MLB level and there is value in that
  17. Braun has a Clause in his Contract in which he would have to approve any trades. He has investments in Wisconsin with restaurants/whatnot and is not likely to approve trades. And I seriously doubt Mark A would trade him Hell, alot of us are finding it hard to believe that Mark A would even be cool with trading Gallardo/Hart/Ramirez. Trading Braun just ain't gonna happen
  18. Dave Bush in 2008 was a much much better pitcher than any of our 3/4/5/6 starting pitchers. His ERA was 4.18 that year with a 1.141 WHIP. He was much more similar to Lohse of '13 than any of our other guys If you are going to compare the 2008 Brewers to the 2013 Brewers the 2008 team will win every time due to vastly superior pitching 2008 Brewers had Prince in a down year with 34 HR's and a .879 OPS which is vastly better than the production of this year's Brewers. Corey Hart being injury prone has to be factored into that as well. Jason Kendall of 2008 and a 2.9 WAR (baseball reference), hit .246/.327/.651 and caught 151 games that year. Lucroy has real value on defense but I wouldn't say he is better defensively than Kendall was. Lucroy's WAR so far this year is a -0.1 (!), his OBP is .280 something. He is worse this year than Kendall was
  19. I honestly think the Brewers are really as bad as they look right now. I think they are one of 5-6 worst teams in MLB and I'm looking forward to a Top 5 draft pick in 2014 We don't have many players who do all the little things a winning team needs: drawing key walks, playing smart baseball, making the extra plays on the field or the basepaths. We're a team of free swingers with one of the worst starting pitching rotations in MLB and a manager who is seemingly losing control of the team and a GM & Owner who think "we aren't that bad"/"we're just a few players away" We really are that bad
  20. Escobar is on the verge of being an All-Star player. LaPorta got us Sabathia and a playoff berth. Lawrie is still young. Gamel if he can stay healthy = who knows. No idea what to think about Jeffress
  21. I would say that is probably about right.
  22. what are they? 5-20 in the last 25 games? Still think Roenicke's job is safe & sound?
  23. Go Brewers! Up late watching the Brew Crew...hoping to see Gallardo hit a walk-off pinch hit HR
