  1. John Hellweg is 6 foot 9, 210 pounds, big strikeouts in the lower levels but the strikeout rate dipped in AA this year http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=hellwe001joh
  2. I'm thrilled, Segura is a bigtime SS talent... that ain't easy to find... he hit .294 in AAA this year as a 22 year old, .346 OBP, 33 SB's in 97 games.... this is our new starting SS and soon to be lead-off hitter for the next 4-5-6 years
  3. That type of thinking, which I agree with, is one of the reasons I'd be thrilled with SS Jean Segura of the Angels. He raked in AAA as a 22 year old this year and just made his MLB debut
  4. And the good news just keeps on coming: Phillies plan to NOT trade Cliff Lee http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/19668767/sources-phillies-plan-to-hold-onto-cliff-lee-through-the-deadline Time for Doug Melvin to play some serious hardball.... I sincerely believe that the reason this is taking so long is that the Angels & Rangers are bidding against each other and Melvin is trying to get Profar. Doesn't mean he'll get him, but I think (guess) that is what he's trying to do
  5. Did Hart's contract get extended and no one told me? Hart is only under contract through 2013. We have Gamel for, what, 4-5 more years?
  6. The Marlins are asking for 2 or 3 top prospects for Josh Johnson, so unless they lower their asking price he won't get moved before the deadline (per numerous reports on Twitter).... Everything seems to be falling into place for the Brewers. Mike Olt & a pitcher, please
  7. Is there an "ignore" button on here? Last I checked a) The Brewers don't play in the AL East b) An incredible amount of changes can happen between now and April 2013: injuries on other teams, trades, player slumps, player breakouts c) Every team in the NL Central are contenders for 2013, besides maybe the Cubs Its a "lock"
  8. Not that he was a direct competition for Greinke, but it looks like Matt Garza will be on the DL until after the trade deadline. One less pitcher available
  9. it is simply not Mark A or Doug Melvin's MO to do a complete rebuild... they will try to reload for 2013 or 2014 at the very latest
  10. Gallardo really is a good solid #3 pitcher on a contending team, maybe a #2. Alot of fans just think of him as "the ace of the team" and when he doesn't live up to that, they get frustrated. He's a 113 ERA+ guy, 3.65 ERA, 1.240 WHIP....he pretty consistently gets those numbers and on a team with a couple of real aces he'd be one of the best #3 starters in baseball (Vogelsong, Cliff Lee etc).... some of us (myself included) thought he'd turn the corner this year and be a Cy Young candidate. He is what he is.... He's (literally) the least of our pitching worries. He's durable, he's tough, he can hit a little, he has a 2.08 ERA postseason ERA in 26 innings, he's under an extremely team friendly ($6 million a year for his production is freakin' great in this day and age) contract through 2015. After Braun, Gallardo is the last Brewer I'd trade http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gallayo01.shtml
  11. At this point I'm just really hoping for Mike Olt
  12. Agreed. But it needs to be the right pitcher. Teheran's struggles in both AAA & MLB definitely give one pause. Scouts say it is just because he is young and has been rushed up the ladder too quickly. Its a tough call either way. I suppose the risk with going with Olt is that we could end up like the 2009-2010 Brewers: lots of offense and no playoffs. I really like a lot of our young pitchers though. I think it is reasonable to suggest that Fiers could end up being better than Teheran and I like the potential of Peralta/Bradley/Nelson/Thornburg/Jungmann... Olt could be a special bat, better hitting potential than anyone we have in our system right now
  13. Olt. Teheran is a great talent but pitchers can be so "iffy". A 3B with power is very valuable. Neither are lights out for sure prospects. Teheran could end up being a closer if he doesn't figure out the breaking ball. Olt has a possibility of a bust due to his lack of great bat speed. I think Olt projects to be a little like Adam Dunn if Adam Dunn could play 3B, and Teheran projects to be like Rafeal Soriano. Those are my "best case scenario" projections for them. I know a lot of scouts much smarter than I see Teheran as a future MLB ace, so obviously take what I'm saying here with a grain of salt!
  14. Orioles are said to be looking for a 3B, too... I guess it really depends on if we are reloading for 2013 or rebuilding for 2014/2015
  15. Profar is only 19 and is in AA. It isn't like he is a guy who is crushing AAA pitchers....maybe you call up a 19 year old from AA in the stretch run but wow that IS a big risk
  16. Sounds like the Orioles are refusing to trade one of their top prospects and are moving on to pursuing lesser players than Greinke http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/19660930/orioles-look-into-colon-liriano-headley-and-hitters-who-can-get-on-base
  17. It is certainly in Doug Melvin's and Mark A's M.O. to try to make sure the Brewers are a contender in 2013, no matter how legit that might seem, that is how they've gone about things year in and year out. Mark A has gotta be freaking out a little about being sellers this year and is probably pressuring Doug to make sure and get players for 2013. I have seen zero evidence that the Brewers organization has a long-term plan that would include building up a roster of top prospects. So, in that sense, the Elvis Andrus rumor has some credibility to it. Same with the Ervin Santana talk (if Santana was added to Segura).... I don't like it but it will actually shock me a little if we DO get a top prospect that we can control for 6 years C'mon, Doug, surprise me, I double dog dare ya
  18. Teheran. Olt. Segura. Delgdo. Maybe Martin Perez
  19. I could see Melvin liking Ervin Santana, because of his bizarre enthusiasm for slightly above average "proven" MLB pitchers, but Santana wouldn't be a main piece of the trade, since he's only under contract through 2013
  20. Greinke straight up for Profar is unlikely. But in the midst of a legit bidding war with Texas' divisional rivals? Greinke plus a couple pieces (Hart and K-Rod as a throw in maybe/) could maybe, conceivably land us Profar.... one can hope at least
  21. Shields is an attempt to lower the price on Greinke. He is not competition in the trade market for Greinke. Shields is also a fall-back move for teams because only one team will land Greinke and a lot of contending teams need pitching
  22. via Twitter: Mike DiGiovanna ‏@MikeDiGiovanna So #Angels skip Santana Fri, move Haren, Wilson up, leaving rotation opening for Sun ... the day Greinke is scheduled to pitch. Interesting.
