  1. A buddy of mine and I were talking about Mark Loretta and I'm starting to think that maybe Loretta was even better than I thought he was during his career (i.e. maybe I took him for granted). I know Loretta was not a Hall of Famer, and he only played in one All-Star game, but if you were assembling a team of All-Time greats, Loretta might be a good choice as a Utily player off the bench who could pinch hit vs LHP. The guy played 1B, 2B, SS, 3B and played them all at above league average. He was a career .306 hitter with a .392 OBP vs LHP (overall he hit .295 with a .360 OBP). He was an All-American college SS who occasionally pitched out of the bullpen and even had a 0.00 ERA in 1.1 innings in MLB. And he could play OF... Am I over-rating Loretta thinking that he could be a solid Utilty player on a team of All-Time greats? Is there another player who could play every infield position above league average and get on base at a .392 clip vs LHP? He didn't steal many bases, he didn't hit for power, but he did get a decent amount of doubles Just how good was Mark Loretta?
  2. Agreed. But is Maysonet an upgrade over Izturis? Maybe... Anyways, I do not think Ransom is a better option than Izturis either, mainly because of his career Fielding % of .957 at SS when League Average is around .972 (Izturis has a career .981 Fielding % at SS, that is a pretty significant difference), and as was mentioned maybe there is some other negative factor in the Ransom make up that we don't know about. He is 36 years old, and maybe there are some health issues/injury issues going on? Ransom's career OBP of .310 is pretty underwhelming too
  3. The biggest and most glaring mistake in this list is not having Satchell Paige in the Top 20. Many believe he should be in the Top 5. Top 20 should be a no-brainer
  4. It is very interesting how different people perceive things. I agree rluzinski, I have real concerns with Aoki's arm. I've seen posts here on Brewerfan.net that state that he has a great arm and I wonder if there is some other Aoki that I'm not watching (I've seen every game this year) I think it is time to permanently move Hart to 1B and use Morgan, Aoki, Gomez in CF/RF with Gomez & Aoki starting vs LHP and Morgan & Aoki starting vs RHP.... I wouldn't be opposed to having Gomez start all the time in CF. What he lacks in hitting vs RHP he more than makes up for in fielding. And I believe Gomez everyday is better than Ishikawa every day!
  5. btw I'd agree completely with Rickey Henderson hitting leadoff, even over Ty Cobb. I'm a big believer in the Total Bases + Walks + Steals stat and Rickey was stellar in that department. A Rickey rally with Hornsby or Cobb and Ted Williams and Ruth or Mantle coming up behind him? Yeah I could deal with that!
  6. My starting pitchers would be: Randy Johnson Pedro Martinez Satchell Paige Babe Ruth (allowing me to have Ruth hit and put Ty Cobb in the OF) I cannot go along with A-Rod because of the Roids. My SS would be Honus Wagner though I'd be tempted to put Hornsby at SS in order to make room for Jackie Robinson or Joe Morgan at 2B I'd go with Mickey Mantle over Mays in CF, a much higher OPS+ and OPS and OBP and I believe Mantle was a better overall hitter. I think there are better options at 1B than Gehrig. I know Gehrig was great but I think Mantle, Mays, and Aaron were better and proved it in much tougher, integrated leagues and all played 1B enough to handle it on my All-Time team.... My Catcher would be Josh Gibson. A .362 career BA in the Negro Leagues and Babe Ruth level power at C.
  7. Aroldis Chapman had his first save today, vs the Yankees. He has the potential to be an elite Closer. 0.00 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP in 22 innings now....
  8. Johnny Damon throws like someone's Grandma. Aoki's arm isn't as bad as Damon's but it is pretty bad. Seems like a good slap hitter though
  9. I suppose Ramirez is getting old and needs a day off sometimes and a day game after a night game but I really wonder about taking him out just when he's finally heating up.... I completely understand sitting Weeks though, that move is needed
  10. Agree with others saying Morgan starting instead of Aoki makes zero sense. This isn't Little League where you have to be "fair" and give everyone a chance. Would like to see Melvin trade Morgan so that this option is taken away from Roenicke
  11. LHB's are hitting just .219 vs Perez, while RHB's are hitting .283 vs Perez, in the small sample of his MLB experience. Will Roenicke be smart enough to never, ever let Perez pitch to a RHB? I'm guessing no. But would be thrilled to be wrong
  12. So, are you suggesting that Randy Johnson was on steroids? I'm prepared to accept that some eras were easier to hit in than others, and that there are adjustments that need to be made when comparing players from different decades. That is why players like Richie Allen (Dick Allen) deserve higher rankings for the numbers he put up in the late 60's/early 70's. But if we are severely discounting players like Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Delgado and Jeff Bagwell for the remarkable numbers they put up in the Steroid era, then we need to be prepared to call Randy Johnson & Pedro Martinez Top 5 pitchers of all-time. Can't have it both ways. (And I do think of the Big Unit & Pedro as Top 5 pitchers by the way)
  13. Weeks is hitting 6th tonight. Hopefully that helps a little.
  14. Johan Santana has the potential to be considered one of the Top 20 pitchers of All-Time when he retires, depending of course on the rest of his career and what type of decline he has. As of right now he has a career 3.10 ERA and a career 141 ERA+ (which has him tied with Trevor Hoffman for 13th All-Time). Considering that part of his career happened during the tail-end of the Steroid Era, his career stats are awe-inspiring. And it does appear that he is back completely. I'm not sure that adding Wright & Santana would make us the favorites to win the World Series unfortunately. We are still way too far from having the pieces to make a run even with adding those 2 great players. And I seriously doubt the Mets would trade Wright this year. It ain't happening. Not unless we traded the Mets Gallardo or Braun.
  15. I hadn't really thought about trading Axford but it makes sense on a lot of levels and he'd have a lot of trade value. I would be shocked if Melvin would trade Axford though Greinke & K-Rod have some pretty significant trade value, especially (obviously) Greinke. Hart is another guy I would trade, as well as Marcum. Maybe a team would take Morgan as an extra part of a trade to "sweeten the deal".
  16. 2 mistakes doesn't make it right. The fact that others teams made the mistake of not picking him up the following year doesn't negate the mistake of trading him in the first place. How much better would this team look right now with Nelson Cruz in right and Corey Hart at 1B? Or they could've gotten a haul for Fielder a few years back. Or they could've traded Hart by now. Any way you look at it, it was a poor decision and poor talent evaluation.
  17. I think with the Greinke trade it was Melvin taking a shot/rolling the dice and I could write about could've and should've all day long but I think it was the right move because without the complete collapse of Marcum and maybe making one other smart move (trading for Furcal for instance) the Brewers would have gone to the World Series and had a great shot at winning the whole thing. So in that way it is worth it...
  18. I thought more about "context" and not just as it applies to Alfonso Soriano (!) If we are prepared to discount Soriano and players like, for instance, Carlos Delgado because of the times they played in, then are we prepared to say that Randy Johnson is probably the greatest pitcher of all-time? If we look at how dominant Randy Johnson was, in the steroid era, pitching to juiced up players, to me that is way more impressive than Walter Johnson & Cy Young playing in segregated leagues with a higher mound and much bigger strike-zone
  19. I really think at this point they need to DL Rickie Weeks and give him a few days off with a rehab assignment in Appleton & Nashville to get his swing and confidence back. They can't embarass him by just sending him to the minors but they could DL him and say "we're still a little concerned about that hand, it is still giving him troubles" etc
  20. Escobar was a key aspect of the Greinke trade, so in that way his value was golden. As far as our use of Hardy, that remains to be seen. If Carlos Gomez can actually play up to his potential (a big "if" that has followed him his whole career) then it was a great trade.
  21. vs LHP is actually where Conrad has the most value. For all we know tonight might be Conrad's "one last chance"
  22. wow that looks like a Spring Training split-squad lineup.... I hope the other Brewers split squad does well in their game back in Maryvale today and we can win 2. oh wait....
  23. Hudson is just 34 years old but is batting just .211 this season with a .260 OBP...yet he has 5 triples this season in 35 games. That's strange.
  24. I wonder where Josh Gibson should rank in this list? It is pretty reasonable to say that best players from the Negro Leagues were just as great as the best players from MLB, and Gibson averaged about 50 HR's per 154 games and had a career batting average of .362 ... considering the power plus average numbers while playing the premium position of catcher I'd put him in the Top 5 All-Time
