  1. Ryan Braun's career OBP right now is at .369 That is pretty low for a guy with Hall of Fame talent. Do you think he'll ever learn to be a more patient hitter? If he took a lot of walks he could be a .410+ OBP/1.000+ OPS guy year in and year out. With his baserunning skills, a much higher OBP would be a tremendous asset. I wonder if he'll ever grow into the type of player who can take 90+ Walks a season?
  2. I don't think any of that is really relevant with KRod now. Just because he did something in the past doesn't mean he will repeat it in the future. Is he a good relief pitcher? Yes. Is he the same KRod that he was 4-5 years ago? No. I'm pretty sure he's lost a few MPH in velocity. He's always given up a lot of baserunners but he was able to minimize the damage because he was able to strike guys out. During his lights out years, his K/9 was 12-13. Now he's around 9.5-10. His K/BB ratio has improved but he's also giving up more H/9, going from 5.5-7 to 7-9. All that being said, I still think he's a valuable pitcher. But looking at his career ERA+ or career WHIP or etc. really don't mean anything because of lot of those numbers are skewed from his elite seasons 5+ years ago and he's simply not the same pitcher he was. Well, yeah, I do tend to like to look at things in a historical context. But still K-Rod's ERA+ was 143 in 2011 (still higher than Sutter's average) and 179 in 2010. Small sample but K-Rod's ERA+ with the Brewers last season was 212! And K-Rod's WHIP was only slightly higher last season from when he had 62 saves in a season.... the point being, he is still a great talent....
  3. More re: K-Rod and his 167 career ERA+. Bruce Sutter is in the Hall of Fame and won a Cy Young and has a 136 career ERA+. Sutter had only 3 seasons where his ERA+ was over 167
  4. I haven't looked at any league wide averages, are runs up in general across MLB? Seems like there have been a lot of HR's in the early going Yes Axford & K-Rod are part of the current problem, but I don't suspect they'll implode so I'm not as concerned about them as I am about the rest of the bullpen. Although maybe I should be concerned, closers tend to fall apart from year to year. I've never really loved K-Rod just because it seems like he gets himself in jams too much, but his stats are very good career wise, maybe a WHIP that is a little too high, but a 167 career OPS+, 2.57 career ERA, 11.1 career K/9 are all pretty elite historically.... for whatever reason I always think of K-Rod as "the most likely player in MLB to have a steep decline"
  5. It is a legitimate cause for concern. The Brewers really need Greinke & Gallardo to pitch like Aces, not 3.75-4.00 ERA 1.300+ WHIP guys (along with Marcum pitching very strong) in order to contend, and that isn't even addressing the bullpen issues outside of K-Rod & Axford They will get better, I am sure of that: Wolf isn't an 7.17 ERA guy, Galardo isn't going to have his ERA over 6 etc etc The question is: will they get better enough?
  6. And have Fielder choke in the playoffs? (I apologize, couldn't resist)
  7. Until the Brewers develop a better option as a LHP for the bullpen, Parra's job is relatively safe. A LHP with Parra's stuff will get a ton of second chances in MLB
  8. Some of those pitches Axford threw to Molina and Freese were downright filthy. 97-98 MPH with movement.
  9. Strasburg was indeed pretty incredible in that game. He made Kemp look silly in 3 at-bats. Strasburg now has a 1.13 ERA and 0.875 WHIP and a 326 ERA+ (!) in 5 starts on this season. Harper is a legit 5 tool talent. Huge mega-potential
  10. Wow between Buck, McCarver and now Gibson it is a Cardinals Glory Fest on this telecast.....
  11. Here's a good article about Harper being brought up http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/post/bryce-harper-can-handle-this-challenge-ready-or-not/2012/04/28/gIQAxPcrmT_blog.html
  12. I can deal with Gomez starting anytime because I think his value on defense out-weighs whatever hitting edge Morgan or Aoki might provide (although I must add that this is merely what I think, I don't have any statistical data to back that up).... what I question is why he is batting 2nd vs a RHP? With Roenicke's seemingly reliance on small samples though, if Gomez goes 2-4 today with a double and a couple runs scored, he might end up starting a lot more vs RHP, which I don't think is such a bad idea (defense!). Kottaras in the 8 hole? I suppose I understand wanting to split up Kottaras & Gamel, but still....kinda a weird lineup but I do like that Roenicke is shaking things up ever so slightly
  13. It'll be fun to watch him play. He's only 19 and is hitting just .250 this season in AAA (small sample though of 80 or so at-bats).
  14. Big series and thank God for DVR as I have to work tonight....
  15. Team value of the Brewers now as compared to when Mark A bought the team is considerably higher. No doubt that the experience of being the Brewers owner is a profitable endeavor. But even if they do have money to spend, I wouldn't spend it on Oswalt. Too many age/injury concerns
  16. If Hardy continues to hit like he did last year for the next 9-10 years he'd actually, as crazy as it might sound, be talked about as a potential Hall of Fame candidate. I know that is a big "if" (averaging 30 HR's a season for 9-10 years into the age 38), but still....
  17. Casey McGehee's career OBP vs LHP is .328 ... that is just plain not good and not good enough to warrant a platoon spot. Plus Veras has value in the bullpen. That was a good trade for the Brewers
  18. Aoki is 30 years old and we have him signed for this year and 2013 with a team option for 2014 He is a fun player to watch and root for....
  19. Still not completely sold on him but the samples are way too small to really get a handle on what he can or cannot do. He might be as good as Morgan. I'd be surprised if Aoki could hit .300 in a platoon split, of course it'd be a pleasant surprise though, but Morgan only gets on base at a .350 clip vs RHP and I think Aoki could achieve that. Which brings to mind the thought that Morgan would really have a tremendous amount of more value if he walked more... and could steal more bases... and could field better... etc etc
  20. Thanks for the clarification. I suppose I was making the mistake of relying on a small sample with my eyes as opposed to checking the stats.
  21. I really think some people are underestimating the value Aramis brings to this team in terms of production at 3B and the way he works the count a lot of times in his at-bats.
  22. I like the bat that Aramis adds to our lineup and in particular I like his approach at the plate with RISP where he works the count and has historically hurt opposing teams in situations like that. He will make mental mistakes sometimes. I sense from him that he is a true professional and takes the game seriously and works towards minimizing his mistakes. Prince Fielder used to make mental mistakes once every 2-3 weeks at the very least (I was going to say "weekly" but that probably isn't fair). Most of Prince's mental mistakes came in the field (throwing to the wrong base, cutting off a throw when he didn't need to etc). It happens
  23. That is a great article, thank you for that. That writer seems to be saying that further injury to Strasburg's elbow is inevitable due to undue extra stress he puts on his elbow because of timing issues where his arm lags behind his body in his delivery.
  24. Thanks for your reply. My initial response would be: perennial Cy Young candidate at the very least. While I know the sample is very small, he looks to me like he could have the potential to be Top 10 - Top 20 Pitchers of All-Time. That is just potential though of course, who knows where he'll end up. The same sort of potential talk was made about Doc Gooden at a similar stage in his career....
  25. I get that, but I don't get why Brooks Conrad couldn't also be "this year's version of Mark Kotsay"? Conrad, if anything, is a gritty tough player who hustles all the time, and has MLB experience and successas a pinch-hitter and role player.
