  1. This might sound weird, but maybe he’s freaked out about the pandemic. Wondering if he should even be out there playing. And the wildfires in Cali are worse than ever. Maybe his mind is elsewhere. Maybe he is thinking “I should have opted out like Lo Cain.” Baseball is too tough to play if you aren’t 100% dialed in and all in. Look, he’s human. These are extenuating circumstances in 2020. To answer the original question: no, I’m not worried about Yelich. Usually great players don’t just fall off the shelf in their prime years. Unless he was juicing before, or there is some sort of injury thing he is struggling with that will continue, he’s gonna be fine. Probably just needs to hit with Barry Bonds some more in the offseason and get the swing dialed back in and get the swagger back. He’ll be fine. And he’ll go back to being a star player

  4. The ball isn’t juiced like it was in 2018 or 2019. Is that the issue? Is it just a small sample of stats? He’s walking a lot. I think a big part of it has been that Hiura is struggling, and the rest of the team has been even worse than Hiura. It was different last year when Hiura was hitting, plus pitchers had to deal with Grandal and Moustakas, Aguillar in 2018, Thames when in a hot streak, etc... now, they can just pitch around Yelich. He isn’t being protected by anyone

  7. I’m just completely thrilled that Stearns and the Brewers didn’t give up on him. He was flat out filthy in the 2018 stretch run and postseason. Between Burnes and Woodruff, maybe just maybe the new reality is that the Brewers can indeed draft and develop pitchers!!!
  8. The return of Brady Clark?
  9. His MiLB splits were also a little better vs RHP. Trout has also been like that his whole career, and Trout has extreme split differences this year and is really struggling vs LHP. I’m no hitting expert but I’m guessing that they struggle with the sliders from lefties coming in on their hands. Keston is great at shooting a slider from a righty into right field.
  10. Yes. And trading for Trout.
  11. I would say that yours is the most likely prediction I’ve seen so far. In fact the payroll might be slashed so much that we don’t see Sogard’s option picked up. It’ll be mostly young guys like Urias in the lineup, with whoever else we have as minor league depth. Sogard has been so bad that he will probably agree to a pay cut and come back at 3 million instead of 5. With the way that Counsell has him in the lineup against all righties I would be surprised if he was not brought back. That falls into one of those “we must save the team from Counsell” categories. He is a good manager, but tends to get fixated on certain players no matter how badly they do, and benches others no matter how well they do. His biggest blind spot seems to be players who remind him of himself, and Sogard is definitely one of them.
  12. I continue to believe the biggest problem with Stearns is the budget set by ownership. It’s like somebody giving you 2 wings, a 20 year old engine, a 10 year old wheel, and some toothpicks, paper clips and duct tape and saying “build me a plane” and then later saying “OK now make it a fighter jet”. Somebody in the Trade Rumor forum said that they think Mark will slash payroll even more in this next offseason. I think they are right. And I get why that makes it all that much more important to get your draft picks right. I have always felt that the Brewers should invest more in the top Latin American players as international signings. However, I check my email every day and Stearns hasn’t asked for my advice.

  14. I get the need to be optimistic but you have to be wearing rose colored glasses to see Ray as being an Acuna type talent. He really is that type of freaky athletic talent. The “if” is the big part of it. If he can get the hitting together. It’s the hardest thing to do in sports.
  15. Keston is #2 or #3 on the team currently in OPS. It’s been a brutal year offensively for the entire roster. I think it is an anomaly, he is and will be an elite hitter. I saw Corey Ray score from first on a single in the gap in Spring Training this year. I also saw him hit a bomb. He shows flashes of being legit. The pick had risks in it, it might not work out, but his athleticism is superstar quality, thus is was a high ceiling/low floor type pick and at the time it was made, I get it. He’s an Acuna type talent if he can get the hitting together.
  16. I still like the Brice Turang pick, too. Yeah I know he struggled in High A ball in 2019, and he has missed an entire season of development now (which is true for every minor leaguer of course) but he’s only 20 years old and was an LSU recruit. I think he will develop the ability to hit MLB pitching. The glove is legit. For a 21st overall pick I think it was high value, getting a bigtime SEC Shortstop recruit like that, who likely can stick at Short. He’s got the genes (Dad played MLB, Mom played D1 Softball). If he had gone to LSU he’d be draft eligible next summer with the hopes of him getting on the MLB field in 2023 or 2024 or so. It’s far too early to give up on him. At the same time, Stearns went out and traded for Urias, who has 6 years of control and a lot of upside too, so he’s not putting all the eggs in the Turang basket as far as Shortstop of the future.
  17. Like Keston Hiura for instance? And Devin Williams? Ok you got me. Two whole players in 4 years. I will say they have been somewhat good at drafting pitching but outside of Hiura, we have been pretty horrible at drafting position players. Meant to add: and Corbin Burnes... and Monte Harrison who helped us get Yelich. How long has Stearns been the GM? How many draft picks should already be helping the major league team in that time? I still have confidence in Corey Ray being a piece of the puzzle in 2022. And the kid they drafted #1 this year, too, should be a good one.
  18. Like Keston Hiura for instance? And Devin Williams?
  19. I haven’t seen mention of the Cain signing. Maybe I missed it. That was a tremendous signing and a big part of why the Brewers went to the playoffs 2 straight years. He’s the type of player whose value is much more than what his stats show... and you can see the current void without him. Stearns has also shown the ability to get valuable players on one year contracts. I think that will continue in future seasons.
  20. The Brewers should absolutely sign Bauer to a 1 year, $30 million dollar contract. It’s a perfect solution to being a small market team. It’s similar to Grandal plus Moose, right? Except it is a TOR arm which is much much more valuable and based on the entire history of the franchise, much more difficult for the Brewers to acquire. I don’t think they’ll do it though
  21. I’m good with the trade. I trust Stearns. I think some of the free agent signings were made with the idea that “if we aren’t in it we can flip these guys at the deadline”. Since they are still in it, there is no reason to be full on sellers, but also Sogard, Healy, Holt, Smoak have very very little trade value, I would guess... Can’t help but wonder which hitter they were trying to trade for.
  22. When Sogard was signed there was some talk of him playing the role of backup and gritty veteran pinch hitter off the bench. I like him in that role. He has a high contact rate and in clutch situations late in games he has value as a PH. However, I thought that Counsell would see Sogard as a starter and would play him too much. Urias being unavailable at the start of the season exasperated that situation, of course. I still like Sogard as a pinch hitter if we can make the playoffs. Assuming Braun is starting most playoff games, I can think of no one else on the roster I’d rather have taking that vital pinch hit at bat in the 9th inning when we need somebody to make contact, move a guy over, drive in a run etc I still think the problem is Counsell. He’d look at Urias, Arcia, & to a lesser degree Hiura and decide that he wants Sogard and Holt to start. I’m always cautious about Counsell giving too much playing time to players that remind him of himself.
  23. Yes. I have. I think Jopal78 put it better than I would have, below: I strongly agree. I think Stearns is limited in what he can do, due to budget concerns, too.
  24. I like the longterm potential of Urias, and thus I am very happy about the trade. You have to give to get. That’s good that Grisham is doing well. The Brewers have a lot of outfielders, and outfield depth.
  25. I think Urias is gonna be really good. It hurts to see Davies doing so well but you gotta give to get... There’s been a weird shift in culture with the Brewers. Aguillar, Villar, Santana, Perez all gone and replaced by players like Smoak, Healey, Gamel, & Holt. The really fun Latin American culture in the dugout replaced by guys who maybe remind Counsell of himself. Really, really boring so far. Not a ton of energy. Feels like a team without an identity. I’ve always been a Hiura fan. Like I said I think Urias will be good. Yelich is a superstar. But, yeah... it’s been a weird change.
