  1. Somewhat of a downtime on Brewers news as we approach Christmas (although with Stearns wheeling and dealing there could be 2 trades by the time I finish this post!) Anyways I thought it'd be interesting to see what the consensus opinion is here in comparing 2 young potential superstar MLB shortstops, Carlos Correa & Francisco Lindor. Interested in your opinions as to who you project to be a better player longterm, both in terms of franchise building and their overall value. I think it is a fascinating comparison and isn't quite the automatic slam-dunk for Correa like many seem to think. They both played about the same amount of games last year and Lindor had a 4.6 WAR vs Correa's 4.1 WAR. While Correa is no slouch with the glove, Lindor is clearly better defensively, offers switch-hitting ability and last year at least hit for a better average. Hard to pass up the power that Correa offers at a premium position though, and the possibility of him hitting 40+ HR's in 2016 and/or 2017 as a SS is a reasonable projection. Longterm Correa might be a 3B while Lindor is likely a career SS.
  2. OBP & OPS are starting to seem a little outdated. OBP assumes that a single is as valuable as a Triple. Slugging Percentage corrects for that, but OPS is weighted too heavily in the slugging department. I prefer wOBA and wRC+
  3. It's funny, because I have used my eyes to see that Braun was a below average defensive outfielder, and thought maybe my eyes were deceiving me, but the metrics seem to back that up
  4. These kind of posts are why I love Brewerfan.net Thank you for the smiles a long the way. i wasn't really joking. my point was that they should try to find a guy in his mid 20's with some potential rather than a guy on the wrong side of 30 on a 1 or 2 year deal to try to squeeze a few extra wins on the season. I like the suggestion of Fuyenmayor from KC, its the least KC could do for us after us helping them with a title. No, I got it. And what you are saying makes sense. I just enjoyed the timing of your post.
  5. Khris Davis, despite being a defensive liability (ranked 25th among all LF's in overall WAR last year) is a legit bat. He ranked 11th among all LF's in wRC+ and 8th in wOBA (ahead of Justin Upton in both categories and ahead of Alex Gordon in wOBA). While it is possible he improves even more, I think now is the time to try to maximize the return on him, or perhaps more specifically after the signings of Cespedes, Upton & Gordon (when a 4th team is left looking for a LF)
  6. Braun is another guy that is strictly a LF or DH, in any sense that borders realism. I suppose you could put Braun at 1B, and I was a longtime advocate of that, but I would be concerned he'd be fairly dreadful at 1B. I suppose if he's an average 1B or slightly below, defensively, and you save wear & tear on his body, hopefully prolonging his effectiveness with the bat, it is certainly worth a try. And during a rebuilding phase it would make sense to give it a shot With Stearns as our GM it is difficult to imagine both Braun & Davis in the same starting outfield, other than simply as a key aspect of "Operation Tankjob" during the rebuild
  7. Another roll of the dice on a high ceiling/high upside type of player
  8. I don't know if the 2016 Brewers are going to be any good at all, but with all the athleticism being added they might at least be fun to watch, and that counts for something (to me, as a fan) I at least feel like the franchise has a direction now
  9. That's a great article, thanks for posting. I would imagine many of us (including myself), are overestimating the trade value of Lucroy
  10. Agreed In regards to Santana. I'm just speculating. Read lots of Houston articles prior to the trade that suggested that players like Chris Carter and other players like him were wearing out their welcome in Houston because of the low BA/high strikeouts approach. And Domingo Santana was one of those mentioned. My speculation is that he was a throw-in. Again, hope I'm wrong, reading too much into it. I probably am At any rate, Phillips was clearly the center-piece of the trade.

  12. Maverick Phillips is a future All-Star (hopefully) Just an opinion, but I believe that Santana is not part of the longterm plans for the Brewers. Stearns was part of the brainthrust in Houston that traded away Santana. There is too much swing & miss in Santana's game, and not enough putting the ball in play. He did have a very good year in AAA this year, and he certainly has potential. I could be wrong, and I'm not saying that I personally think that Santana isn't going to be a very good player, I just suspect that Stearns doesn't value him highly and either did the Houston front office.
  13. I would think that: A) The Pirates have been trying to trade Broxton for awhile. He has talent and was never going to play CF for the Pirates B) Jason Rogers is more highly valued among MLB GM's than even us "not so casual" fans would like to think. Gotta give something to get and this could be a good solid trade for both parties
  14. Wow, that is one helluva return for Jason Rogers Keon Broxton is only 25, 6'3" and can go and get it in CF. I love how Stearns is upgrading the overall athleticism among the Brewers. Broxton is another player who will take his walks and get on base and steal 2nd.
  15. Well it is better than signing the likes of Mark Reynolds, Jeff Suppan, Matt Garza, Aramis Ramirez etc and saying "we are excited about the way we've built a perennial playoff contender."
  16. Great letter from a thoughtful owner. I just hope he sticks to the plan and keeps himself on an extremely short leash: "we will not take any shortcuts or look for quick fixes." Yes, please!
  17. That is 100% correct. And unfortunately for the Brewers, most of the rest of the front offices in MLB are getting much wiser and much more analytically advanced. Maybe the Brewers can sneak Braun past a Dave Dombrosky type while he still has a front office job.
  18. Defensive WAR offers us a way to quantify what many see with their own eyes. It's really as simple as that. Braun's bat, during his peak, had plenty of value, no doubt about that. I prefer a more complete player. And I certainly prefer a player who is less of an injury risk and (hindsight being 20/20) won't get suspended. I guarantee you that every GM in MLB, given the gift of hindsight/foresight, would take Alex Gordon over Ryan Braun if given the choice back in 2010. To say that Ryan Braun has been an epic disappointment is putting it very lightly, to me. Now that we have a past that can give us insight into the future, there is no way Braun ranks ahead of Gordon now
  19. Certainly worth taking a flyer on. Whatever happened with Middlebrooks? He was such a highly regarded prospect.
  20. Certainly worth taking a flyer on. Whatever happened with Middlebrooks? He was such a highly regarded prospect.
  21. Strikeouts for pitchers can really effect their pitch count, though, too. We saw that with Gallardo, for instance. One of the things that made Greg Maddux so great was that as a "groundball pitcher", he didn't have to rely on strikeouts to get through innings and kept his pitch count lower
  22. Im hardly a Braun fan these days but in fairness to him, he moved to RF to take one for the team. He turned himself into a pretty decent LF which is where anyone who traded for him would play him I would think. . Among all LF's, between the years 2009 & 2011, according to Fangraphs Braun ranked 32nd in defensive WAR. Right between Carlos Quentin & Delmon Young. He has never been anywhere close to even an OK defensive player. Despite that he still ranked 2nd overall among all LF's during those years, and 11th among all players, because of his bat.
  23. By the way: among all Outfielders in the Years 2012-2015 (i.e. the last 4 seasons), Alex Gordon ranks 6th with 18.6 WAR. Braun ranks 21st with 12.4 WAR (right in between Denard Span & Justin Upton). I think Gordon is pretty clearly a much more highly regarded overall player than Braun at this point. Gordon is a year younger, too, and has generally been much healthier in recent seasons
  24. Among RF's with 350 at-bats or more in 2015, Braun ranked 31st in MLB in 2015 in Defensive WAR (according to Fangraphs). He is one of the worst defensive RF's I've seen in quite awhile.
