  1. Realistic if he continues to tear the cover off the ball and becomes an elite prospect, which I'm all in favor of
  2. Kodi Medeiros is underrated by Brewers fans and I find that pretty surprising. You would think people would get excited about a guy giving up no homeruns and striking out over a batter an inning in his first real taste of pro ball. Not to mention he was 19 playing in A ball and is left handed. Heck he also was really solid in not giving up many hits. His walk rate is a bit high, but nothing I would be overly concerned about. There are a lot of players that struggle with control issues when they first get into pro ball. I would be a bit surprised if he doesn't push himself onto some Top 100 lists before 2017. If he ends up in A+ he should put up some really nice stats. Agreed! 19 years old, his ground ball rates were ridiculous, and strong strikeout numbers on top of that. Anecdotally, there is a pattern if you look at guys with elite stuff who go on to become frontline starters where they struggle with BB/9 rates comparable to Medeiros's at the same age and level. If they're good enough, they often develop their control pretty fast as shoot up the prospect rankings. If you're lucky, you end up with Clayton Kershaw.
  3. Wow, some terrible "analysis" there. Anderson has a 7.3 K/9 in his 267 IP (he was better in the minors), a 4.17 FIP and 3.96 xFIP, and a 1.2 HR/9. That makes him just a touch worse than league average (2015: 7.8 K/9, 1.0 HR/9, 3.96 FIP, 3.96 xFIP). Meanwhile, Miller Park is not really any more or less hitter friendly than Chase Field (both skew more hitter-friendly than average), and Anderson is not an extreme flyball pitcher. By any metric, in 2015 Anderson was substantially better than Matt Garza and Wily Peralta, and more or less equivalent to Nelson and Jungmann. If you rank our projected rotation by xFIP from 2014-2015: Anderson, 3.96 xFIP (267.0 IP) Davies, 3.96 xFIP (34.0 IP) Peralta, 3.97 xFIP (307.3 IP) Nelson, 4.02 xFIP (246.6 IP) Jungmann, 4.10 xFIP (119.3 IP) Garza, 4.18 xFIP (312.0 IP) Obviously nobody is expecting him to be the best pitcher on the team though. I'd say five years of a slightly-worse-than-league-average SP who can either absorb innings at the back of the rotation, or have a nice first half and get flipped for prospects, is a great return. Not sure what that author is talking about at all.
  4. To me, it would make sense to go with 1B Carter 2B Gennett SS Villar 3B Cecchini IF Walsh IF Hill I don't see why we need both Cecchini and Middlebrooks on the major-league roster. Keep in mind Walsh can play OF too, so even if Counsell wants Rivera on the bench, Walsh could take the 5th OF spot as a utility OF/IF.
  5. Here is an article from ESPN Boston back when Diaz was a high school draft prospect: http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/high-school/post/_/id/31535/in-centrals-isan-diaz-a-phenom-has-awoken
  6. You know I am just going to throw this out there...but if you ended up giving them like the first player they asked for maaaaaaybe you gave up too much? Usually you start high and kind of end up meeting in the middle. If Dave Stewart got graded for his negotiating skills I think he would have an F. It's possible Stewart got us to take on part of Hill's salary as a compromise. Which really is only an issue for Mark A, what do I care what the team spends in a rebuilding year? DFA Aaron Hill for all I care, we got a really nice prospect!
  7. Have you watched him play the last couple years? I agree that he isn't equivalent to Aaron Hill and his $12M contract, but Segura stinks.
  8. There is that! I seem to recall a few posts recently saying something along the lines of "quick, trade some Brewers to Arizona before Stewart gets fired!" From McCalvy on Twitter: "One of Stearns' first contacts after getting the job was D-backs exec Dave Stewart."
  9. I see that Diaz was ranked as the Diamondbacks' #9 prospect for 2016 by Baseball America. Getting lots of praise on Twitter. Not bad!
  10. It sounds like he profiles more as a 2B, and thus is probably the best 2B prospect in the system now.
  11. Chase Anderson is not a throw in, he's a solid back-end starter and we will have him for five years. Basically you are trading Tyler Wagner and a redundant Jean Segura for five years of Tyler Wagner's ceiling, a veteran utility guy, and a nice SS prospect.
  12. Medeiros will be #1 as I've been arguing for some time (hopefully somewhat more credibly than putting Brent Sutter #1, no offense clancy ). I think Trent Clark is the real deal and will also be considered an elite prospect (top-20?) by season's end
  13. I like Guerrero, but as mentioned he becomes a free agent after the season if he is traded (so we would only have him for one year, or would have to negotiate with Scott Boras to buy out that provision). Even if it weren't for that clause, he's a free agent after 2017, so not a huge help to a rebuilding team. I'd prefer to see what Cecchini can do in an extended look.
  14. Liriano's brief stint in the majors came in 2014, not last season. I believe 2014 was his first full year back after TJ surgery? Last season he spent the entire year in AAA and hit .292/.383/.460/.843
  15. SRB, this young man has always had the tools. Scouts have varied in their opinions on his ceiling, but never on the raw talent. He missed a year to Tommy John surgery, and he didn't do well at the big league level, I'm sure that's where the drop in ranking comes from. Good point. Kiley McDaniel at Fangraphs still had him in his top 200 last season though (after his Tommy John and poor MLB stint), giving him the same rating as Knebel, Coulter, Taylor, Harrison, and Lara, for what it's worth. You'd think his great 2015 at AAA would have answered a lot of skeptics and bumped him up even further, but maybe not. Top-100 might be pushing it, but he wasn't even on the Padres Top 10 this season In any event, I'm excited to have him on a rebuilding team!
  16. Based on his past rankings, 2015 season, talent, etc., it seems like he should be considered a top-100 prospect to me. Anybody know why he seems to have fallen off 2016 lists, other than being one year older? He had a great year in AAA and showed that he can hit for AVG. Fantastic pick up.
  17. You're not thinking of old favorite Hernan "The Hurricane" Iribarren, are you? He was 2B not SS, but there was a lot of excitement about him for a brief moment in the mid-00s before his star quickly burned out (cups of coffee in '08-09 notwithstanding, though I'm sure most people posting on here remember Iribarren).
  18. Presumably you are thinking of Andres Martinez but he was not nearly as high profile as Lara and I don't think he was really the "shortstop of the future," not sure who else it would be (Santo Aybar??) Most of the comparatively big signings in the past have been outfielders, like Jose Pena and Jose Garcia.
  19. There is a systemic bias against the farm systems of certain teams, including the Brewers. I don't mean that as some kind of conspiratorial allegation, there are a variety of reasons for it that are mostly unintentional, but as someone who follows prospect (punditry) relatively closely I am convinced that it's true. If you took all the same prospect and moved them to the Texas Rangers system we would be consensus top-5 right now.
  20. It's a minor league deal, Capuano has been decent within the last three seasons, and the upside of his role on the major-league team is probably as a LOOGY. Not sure why anyone is upset?
  21. I hope they don't vote to permanently ruin NL baseball based on a marginal advantage in a couple of rebuilding seasons.
  22. Martes would be the most valuable part of the trade. He has very high upside.
