  1. I'm optimistic that Medeiros is going to have a huge breakout into a #1/2 SP-type prospect, as I've been saying for a while. Mark my words! (But only remind me of them if I turn out to be correct)
  2. John Manuel suggested we have already moved into the top 5/10 recently. Factor in a top-3 draft pick in 2016, possible trades of Lucroy/Lind/Kh Davis, and breakouts from some of our recent high-risk teenagers (Medeiros, Gatewood, Harrison, Lara), and we could be in the running for best system in baseball in not too long.
  3. Jose Cuas 3-for-3 so far today with a triple and two home runs. He is an interesting prospect to watch, as the scouting report I read on him says he is a plus defender at 3B (they have him playing 2B today) with the potential to develop more power. A little old for Rookie ball, but he could develop into a real prospect I think.
  4. Quote from Baseball America's John Manuel in this recent Tom H piece:
  5. Seems like a purely objective medical risk/reward decision, not sure how we can fault the organization on this one...
  6. 1B Jon Singleton and 3B Colin Moran for 1B/DH Adam Lind this offseason? The Astros seem to have soured on Singleton and so unloading his (modest) contract might be appealing, whereas we can give him a longer leash while rebuilding and even if he never pans out the financial commitment is not huge. Might have to package somebody with Lind to get a deal done.
  7. If we trade Davis for that kind of return the man in charge should be fired. Khris Davis is worth at least one Top 100 type prospect at this point minimum. Why? He's such a negative Defensively. His highest HR total is 22 for the full season last year. And sits at 7 now this year. His BA from .244(below ML avg) to .230(even further below) Below Defense. Below BA. What does he provide that is remotely above average? Unless he goes on a HR tear to get above 20HRs again on this season, He's a Below average player. precisely a reason along with Gennett that they weren't top 100 ranked prospects. Why can he command one? Honestly? There isn't one thing of Davis on paper that sticks out that says anything but average at best. If he were a prospect right now in the Brewers Minors where are you ranking him? Probably 23rd ahead of Kyle Wren from what I know. Though 15th-23rd would seem to fit. I'd rank MLB's top 30 a little differently. But seriously if you have to grade Davis It'd have to be like this: Hit: 45 Power: 50 Run: 45 Arm: 40 Field: 45 Overall: 45 Top 100 prospects are Overall valued at 55 or higher. How does this 45 net one of those? Half a year of Brandon Moss just netted a very good pitching prospect in Rob Kaminsky. Davis is cheap and can slot right into someone's starting LF gig, and even if he's not a starter he has value as a platoon bat.
  8. Podsednik without the steals? What's left?
  9. I think it's telling that one of the main pieces in the Gomez traded was a guy like Santana who has already been destroying AAA for two seasons now. You can't really keep him there any longer, and yet it seems unlikely they traded for him to let him ride the bench. The plan is either to trade Davis or move Braun out of RF (the former being much more likely), which I am in favor of because I think Santana needs regular playing time (why not? we are rebuilding) to work on his K's against major-league pitching. Let him sink or swim, a positional battle would just add unnecessary stress. Give the guy 550+ PA so we can find out what we've got.
  10. It is very difficult to develop or sign a star catcher, but paradoxically fairly easy to find competent catchers floating around free agency. It would be nice to have an option in our system, but I would be opposed to making a catching prospect a substantial part of a significant deal like a Lucroy trade. Maybe if you can get a flier like Sisco as a throw-in, but otherwise my preferred strategy is to build a winning team and then find a catcher off the scrap-heap who can serviceably hit 8th and give you good defense. I would do this trade though: To ATL: C Jonathan Lucroy To MIL: C Christian Bethancourt SS Ozhaino Albies LHP Max Fried LHP Kolby Allard
  11. Since when are we pinning Suppan and Lohse on Mark A? New one to me.
  12. My guesses: C - Lucroy 1B - Rogers (Lind traded in the offseason) 2B - Gennett/Sardinas 3B - Dominguez SS - Segura LF - Braun CF - Reed (Schafer for the first month or so of the season, then Reed called up) RF - Santana (Davis traded in the offseason)
  13. I think he's clearly our ace going into 2016, not to say he's a #1/#2 by the league's standards, but he is better than anybody else we've got.
  14. Forgive me: isn't Mark the very definition of "meddling"? Did I miss something? (Meaning that sincerely even though it sure reads condescending. Not intended that way) When has Mark A ever really meddled? He is hands-on maybe, but I don't recall him ever vetoing Melvin or forcing a move/signing to happen like goes on in Detroit.
  15. I'm not real big on Roache at this point, in fact I've been firmly in the skeptic category since his first half season in WI but that blurb about power is not remotely true, he's displaying above average power with a well below average hit tool. That's something very difficult to do. He's hit 22, 18, and so far this year 15 HRs between 2 levels. He's hitting a HR every 23 ABs for his career, and as I mentioned has hit 15 this season while striking out 37.43% of the time. I agree he's never going to be an OBP guy, he'd be a nice 5 or 6 hole hitter with that kind of power hitting .240 while batting 5th or 6th as a best case. We don't have a high AVE, high SLG, high OBP prospect like Fielder in the system at this time. Even Braun only had a trio of good OBP seasons, his OBP is normally 50 to 60 points higher than his BA, the Brewers just haven't developed that kind of hitter. I don't consider those minor league HR totals above-average for a first baseman.
  16. Dombrowski has overseen bad franchises being turned into World Series champions/contenders throughout his career, he did it in Montreal, Florida, and Detroit. Personally I think luck is a lot more important than the genius of the GM, but on paper he wouldn't be a bad fit for the Brewers. Who knows what he could do with a "good" owner like Mark A rather than the dumpster fire in Florida or the meddling in Detroit.
  17. It seems incredibly unlikely that Roache hits well enough to be a major-league 1B. He's 24 soon, not 19, and has shown neither above-average power nor OBP-skills in the minors.
  18. 90% chance Davies is in the rotation, that's why they traded for him...
  19. Lucroy is a good catcher. But if another team values him like an MVP catcher based on 2014 (or he values himself like an MVP catcher in contract negotiations), he needs to go sooner rather than later.
  20. Okay but you can do the same thing with the Cubs. I won't use Russell in AAA because he only had less than 50 at bats there. Russell at 20 in AA .302/.355/.529/.884 Schwarber at 22 between AA and AAA .323/.430/.591/1.021 Bryant at 22 between AA and AAA .325/.438/.661/1.099 It's close on all of them but the defensive value that the Cubs provide push them over the top for me. Kris Bryant also struck out 162 times in 492 AB.
  21. Collymore starting in LF tonight for his first game in the organization. Guess they're not going to play him at 2B.
  22. We could have easily moved K-Rod if we settled for partial salary relief and a flier like Collymore. I'm assuming that Melvin was (rightfully) demanding a more premium return given how good K-Rod has been yet again, and there just wan't a big market for closers (did any end up moving?).
  23. It's tough not to be biased by how they ultimately turned out, but I don't think Schwarber/Bryant are in the same league as Fielder/Braun. Neither one of those guys is likely going to be a .400+ wOBA type hitter. Bryant is obviously the best of the bunch, and he strikes out basically twice as much as Prince Fielder ever has, with less power and a worse hit tool. Comparing Schwarber to Jimmie Foxx is bonkers.
  24. Are we talking prospects, as in Rickie Weeks's ultimate MLB career is irrelevant? I think you clearly go with Fielder/Braun/Weeks in that scenario, even factoring in the potential that Schwarber actually sticks at C, because those three players were simply much better hitters. Then again, I guess you have to factor in the way league-wide offense has changed. I'd still go with Fielder/Braun/Weeks by a wide margin. Of course, the Cubs have the nice advantage that they have this young core and can outspend anybody on free agents on top of that...
  25. Ideally they would trade Lind, move Braun to 1B, and let Santana play RF (i.e. this winter or some point in 2016).
