  1. The pitching staff would need to have a really, really lucky year. But it's not like we're the Astros; we still have a potentially elite offensive core.
  2. 1) MLB leaks absurd lifetime ban story to dumb media 2) MLB tells Braun: "Ok, but we will accept a plea for a 50-game suspension" 3) MLB (hopefully) gets laughed out of room 4) MLB unable to suspend Braun due to complete lack of evidence; Bug Selig sheds tear; no reasonable fan cares
  3. Axford is more expensive. KRod is a rental. I don't see how a 3.53ERA RP is mediocre? His ERA was 3 prior to a recent Season Worst 3ER in .1 ip outing. He'll likely erode it back down towards 3. Actually Thornton is more expensive (and also comes with a $1M buyout for next season, unless they want to spend $6M on him). He was an elite reliever from 2008-10 but has been in decline ever since; his ERA this year is 3.86 and that's overperforming his peripherals (4.71 FIP!). He also has a .414 OBP vs. RHB this season, so basically they have to use him as a LOOGY if they have any sense. So they got an expensive, sort of mediocre LOOGY. In contrast, Axford and K-Rod have the ability to close, Axford is under team control for a few more years, and both have pitching outstanding over the last few months. They should have way more value than Thornton.
  4. BA had Jacobs as the Red Sox #13 prospect entering the season. I agree though, the White Sox received good value for a 36 year old reliever owed $3.5 million. Yeah, my mistake. He was #6 pre-2012. Even #13 is not a bad return though.
  5. White Sox trade Matt Thornton to Red Sox for OF Brandon Jacobs Seems like pretty good news for us. Thornton is expensive and has been relatively mediocre for a while now, whereas Baseball America had Jacobs as the Red Sox #6 prospect entering the season I would expect K-Rod/Axford to bring back substantially better than that.
  6. Reports that Texas interested in Gallardo and/or Aoki Would that be enough for Olt and a pitcher? The problem being the Rangers don't seem to have any quality SP prospects. If hadn't just gone on the DL, I'd says Joey Gallo and Mike Olt. Screw pitching, I want a team again that hits .200 with 4+ HR per game!!! (The Brewers way)
  7. I definitely agree that it's possible, but client confidentiality is a huge deal for law firms. That would be a pretty egregious offense, not something that is just a run of the mill mistake. Which is why I was wondering what the evidence for assuming it was Braun's camp was. I highly doubt his girlfriend or parents were going around talking about how Braun was going to get suspended for 50-games (remember, the initial leak was fairly specific). It seems much more likely to me that somebody at MLB leaked it, or somebody involved with the drug testing (who I assume would be an agent of MLB's and thus would still make MLB liable for the leak). But they got away with it (1) because Braun wanted everything to die down, and (2) the MLBPA probably didn't want to bring a potentially huge lawsuit against MLB (what would the damages be for harm to Braun's career/financial interests -- in the millions?)
  8. Yes, but a competent professional can investigate something without disclosing who his or her client is or what the exact situation is. I'm guessing the caliber of representatives that Braun has would not make that mistake (and likely deal with huge issues of confidentiality on a regular basis). Though I could be wrong if it was reported as being a friend of Braun's or something as torts suggested above. (Not a great friend!)
  9. That would have required Braun's legal team to make the horrendous error of informing the third-party about all the details of the suspension, why would they have done that? If you are doing research on PEDs you don't say "Hey, I'm representing Ryan J. Braun who just got suspended for 50-games for a PED test, can I ask you some questions?"
  10. I think the general consensus is that the leak came from someone Braun consulted and not from MLB. What is the basis for that, again? (Honestly asking) I find it almost inconceivable that his legal team would let that leak.
  11. Excuse me? Under what provision in the CBA would they be a able to suspend him 50-100 games for refusing to answer questions. There is no way that would survive an appeal. This is either (1) totally made up; (2) a hopefully ineffective ploy to put pressure on players; (3) a bad faith move by MLB because they know that even if Braun successfully appeals a second (failed) suspension will permanently tar him.
  12. I am 100% sure that in the first few months after the 2010 draft (and into that Winter, I believe), he was considered one of the main frontrunners to be the first overall pick in the following year's draft. Obviously he didn't take that step forward, from a scouting perspective, but that was the analysis at the time.
  13. Jungmann has a 1.156 WHIP at AA this season and was a consensus top-15 pick with former possible-first-overall-type talent. I think it's a little too soon to call that pick a mistake. He's going to be undervalued in rankings because those inevitably rely on shorthand markers and the fact is he's not a big strikeout pitcher. That doesn't mean he can't be a great pitcher.
  14. I don't see Melvin trading either Lohse or Gallardo if he's not getting a close-to-ready SP in return. If he doesn't get someone for the 2014 rotation he's just going to have to sign another free agent this offseason. What about a Boston trade with something like Lohse/Axford for one of Barnes or Webster (and some lower-level fliers)?
  15. Considering the Dodgers gave up absolutely nothing for Nolasco, if anything I feel like it hurts Gallardo's trade value. Obviously Gallardo is still better than Nolasco and has an extra year of team control, but it doesn't help when roughly comparable pitchers are going for peanuts.
  16. Lindor is not even close to possible for Gallardo. Only reason I could see them trading Bauer is because he has struggled so much this season.
  17. Possible targets? I'm assuming Melvin will only trade Gallardo if he's getting back starting pitching that: (1) is top-100 prospect quality, and (2) will be ready to contribute by 2013-2014. So out of teams that have expressed interest in Gallardo or pitching generally, does that limit targets to these SP? Trevor Bauer (CLE, RHP) (AAA) Tyler Skaggs (ARI, LHP) (AAA/MLB) Zach Lee (LAD, RHP) (AA) Cody Buckel (TEX, RHP) (AA) Matt Barnes (BOS, RHP) (AA) Allen Webster (BOS, RHP) (AAA/MLB) To me the obvious trade target here is Boston, not Arizona. A package built around Barnes/Webster seems more realistic for Gallardo's current value. It might be too rich with how well he's been playing, but maybe they could ask for Garin Cecchini (3B) as well. Cecchini and one of Barnes/Webster would be a pretty great return, imo, and one that could pretty realistically happen.
  18. Best odds at this point are obviously on Rodon, just because the Brewers have a likely chance to get the 1/2 overall pick, and we already know they like the guy.
  19. There's a difference between being a big dude and having comic books arms. Frank Thomas had those comic book arms that strangely only seemed to exist in the 1990s and that no era has had before or since. Adam Dunn and Dave Kingman look/looked nothing like Thomas.
  20. Skaggs plus??? I would trade Gallardo and our entire bullpen for Skaggs. That would be a fantastic return, they don't need to add anything. Isn't he the top LHP prospect in baseball?
  21. This article is infuriating. The public are the ones who are outraged by PED use? No, it's irresponsible "news" outlets like ESPN that manufacture false outrage that keep bringing these stories up. And if you shove something down the public's throat long enough I guess people are going to be duped into feeling outraged. *Edit* And another thing, but I'm tired of frauds like Frank Thomas acting all high and might about PEDs when the odds are better than not that he was using to. Please name another player in the history of the game with Frank Thomas's physique who wasn't taking something. Though I guess he needs to shout the loudest so they don't keep him out of the Hall of Fame too.
  22. Cabrera is/was a once-in-a-generation type talent though. I tried to find past top international prospects via google archives (though kind of jumbled). In 2008 the consensus top player was Michael Ynoa, who is currently 21 in A-ball for the Athletics with mediocre numbers in his minor league career (didn't make BA Organizational Top 10 this year). In 2009 the consensus top three players seems to have been (order unclear): Miguel Sano, who signed with the Twins, is now at AA, and was ranked #9 in baseball by BA for 2013; Wagner Mateo, who is 20 and was demoted to Rookie ball this year for the Diamondbacks; and Gary Sanhez, who was #57 overall in baseball for 2013 In 2010 there were actual BA rankings: the #1 prospect Martin (Estelion) Peguero, currently looks like a bust for the Mariners; #2 Luis Heredia is a good prospect for the Pirates and was ranked #78 overall coming into 2013 by BA; #3 Adonys Cardona is look like a bust for the Blue Jays So of these seven top-3-caliber international prospects, 4 are looking like total busts, 1 is a top-10 caliber prospect, and 2 are top-100 caliber prospects.
  23. I like BA/MLB but ranking 16-year-old international prospects seems pretty nonsensical to me. Maybe there is a consensus generational-type talent every once in a while, but I don't think spending $2+ million on a 16-year-old (whatever "scouts" grade him) is really netting you a "very good prospect" These players getting $750k-$3m are all relatively interchangeable I think. Maybe the guys at the higher end of that scale are slightly more impressive, but we're not talking a huge difference in baseball money/talent here.
  24. Just because a few of our "top" prospects are OF doesn't mean we are by any means over-crowded with MLB-caliber starting OF, other than Braun and Gomez (Aoki is good but a short-term piece). I don't actually know much about Eaton though, I just think two top-100 prospects would be a pretty solid return.
  25. Skaggs was the BA #12 prospect in baseball entering the season. I really don't think Gallardo is the caliber of pitcher that brings Skaggs into the discussion (maybe a few years ago based on potential, but he has never taken the expected step forward and is having a mediocre season...) Something like Davidson/Eaton would be a pretty great return.
