  1. Sure, but if he had a 2.73 FIP as well then he would either not be available or would cost Hiura + Turang. I think Minor is a great target because he pitches deep into games, he is left handed, and this season is not just a fluke, he really was this good a few years ago back before he got injured.
  2. There's a spectrum of sports broadcasters: *A legend like Uecker actually adds to my enjoyment of the game. *BA and Rock add nothing to my enjoyment of the game and possibly detract from it a little, but... *If you listen to other team's broadcasters they are mostly awful and greatly detract from my enjoyment of the game. So I'm not a huge fan of BA and Rock's commentary, but it is way above average.
  3. I mean he barely pitched this season before they rushed him to the majors. Didn't he have like 3.0 IP total in the minors? It's not surprising that he's rusty out of the gate.
  4. Hopefully he can lead us into battle like a Persian king and serve as a wrecking ball in the rotation. Our own Smyly Cyrus.
  5. I too await the Dubon Era, but in terms of cycling up utility guys from AAA right now, it's not as if Saladino hasn't earned the first look. He's been smoking it all season, .288/.375/.568.
  6. Perez has not been great, but it's not like Saladino is going to light the world on fire at the plate. Any chance this move is foreshadowing a trade that might make use of Perez's now vacant 40-man spot?
  7. They're DFA'ing Hernan, which suggests to me that Shaw is not coming back up anytime soon. No more need for a bat for LHP.
  8. Will Smith would be the ideal target because he wouldn't have to close and could be used more based on matchups (not that he is really struggling as the full-time closer). From 2017-2019 he has best xFIP against LHB in all of the majors by a substantial margin. Dominant lefty killer. A lower profile guy is Tim Mayza on the Blue Jays. He's been solid overall in a relative small sample over the last two seasons, but especially effective against lefties.
  9. It's always hard to give up on a guy, but Aguilar needs to go given that we are locked in a division race. We could still probably trade him to an optimistic team in rebuild mode and get a fringe prospect in return. I'm more confident in Shaw turning things around long-term, and it is a more logical roster construction. vs. RHP 1B - Thames 2B - Hiura 3B - Moustakas bench bat for LHRP: Gamel, Perez (SS/2B/3B) vs. LHP 1B - Moustakas 2B - Hiura 3B - Perez bench bat for RHRP: Shaw (3B/2B/1B), Gamel
  10. Ok, here's your upside pick, folks
  11. Well I know who I want! 3B Drew Mendoza "The raw power is legitimate, though, and the team that thinks it can get him to tap into it more consistently will take him in the early rounds, with some seeing a three true outcomes hitter like Russell Branyan in him."
  12. Haven't seen it mentioned yet but Ethan Small could be welcomed to the majors one day by fellow Mississippi State alum Brandon Woodruff.
  13. No, but there's a looong way to go for that to happen, and those who advocated signing Keuchel(I wasn't among them) were doing so because he had a proven track record and in spite of his diminishing FB velocity. Very few guys who are 4 year college guys add velocity to their FB. Hopefully we got one as he's just one year removed from TJ. I see what you're saying, I just don't think it's a fair comp. Compare the 4th year Jr with the 18 year old Prep kid with 4 pitches, a 65 fastball that touches 97 and scouts think will add a MPH or 3 yet and could be a future ace, and it's easy to see why he was the "exciting" pick. I liked Malone as an option too, but there are a lot more guys who through 100 mph than there are with a 15+ K/9 in the SEC. I'm not sure Keuchel is a good comp because he is a low-K/9 pitcher. There are lots of strikeout pitchers with lower top velocity if their fastball plays. Throwing super hard is just one way of having an effective fastball.
  14. It sounds like his fastball is very effective though (Jim Callis referenced his fastball "shape"). A couple random examples off the top of my head (there may be other or better examples), among the most valuable fastballs in MLB in 2019: 5. Hyun-Jin Ryu, +10.1, average velocity: 90.9 mph 12. Matthew Boyd, +7.4, average velocity: 92.1 mph
  15. It's a common misperception that fastball quality is directly correlated to fastball velocity, which is not the case.
  16. They all say that, except for like top 5 picks. Re: the notion that Small is a "boring" pick: 83.0 IP, 1.84 ERA, 0.810 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9, 15.1 K/9! Boring, ok.
  17. I'm glad. Seems like he was definitely going to the Cubs otherwise.
  18. A couple big "reaches" here (at least according to most rankings). Good news for the Brewers!
  19. If MLB is not going to allow draft pick trading, what is their excuse for the first round of the draft being so ponderously slow?
  20. UNLV player going to play with Bryce Harper. Nice!
  21. I'm willing to improve the MLB Network draft coverage for free! They don't even have to pay me to host it.
  22. Malone is supposed to have the highest upside of any pitcher in the draft. Wouldn't be upset with that pick!
  23. Fangraphs final mock has us taking LHP Hunter Barco (HS)
  24. Does anyone know of good live draft night coverage (as in, not the MLB Network broadcast)?
