  1. Teams make bad moves. What happened to baseball writers with enough confidence in their methods to push back and not try to rationalize everything any team does. The Padres made an idiotic move a couple years ago to when they inexplicably gave Eric Hosmer a mega-contract. Anyone with a minimal familiarity with saber metrics could have told you that as a bad move, and surprise, so far it was! The Padres are a bad front office.
  2. This is nonsense! Stick by you numbers or they are meaningless. Urias was a consensus top-20 prospect coming into 2019, and he proceeded to absolutely decimate AAA pitching (.410 wOBA) over most of 2019. The fact that he had 249 so-so plate appearances as a 22-year-old in the majors (which were arguably BABIP based, because he maintained solid BB/K numbers) means his value dropped $40 million? His overall season should have increased his prospect value.
  3. Odds are much higher that he is traded for a minimal return than he is non-tendered. He still isn't going to cost very much via arbitration. I'd say 60% stay on the team as bench bat and splits time with Urias; 30% traded for a flier prospect; 10% non-tendered.
  4. Villar is not really a "4 WAR" player. He put up 4 fWAR last season because he played every single game of the season and accumulated 700+ PA, and because his defensive metrics had a flukey year. We all know from watching him that he is not even close to an average defender. I'd still love to have him as a utility guy and bench bat, if he cost nothing, but he's not going to be worth the cost to play that role for us.
  5. [sarcasm]The PTBNL is... Zack Brown![/sarcasm]
  6. Bit of an aside, but is anyone else sick of the way baseball websites have stopped taking opinions on absolutely anything over the last few years? They realized that they get more clicks by not alienating any team's fan base (with the rare exception for a team like the Marlins that has no fan base), so they will no longer say anything bad about any front office. Any article about any trade they will pretend like both teams won. The Padres made two objectively horrible moves yesterday from a numbers/sabermetrics stand point. The Brewers hoodwinked them with one of the most imbalanced trades in projected-value history, and they gave a preposterous contract to Pomeranz. I've yet to see a single writer take them to town for those moves. BORING!
  7. What happened to Welington Castillo? Is he completely cooked? Only 32, which is not ancient.
  8. Have to agree that leaving Brown unprotected makes no sense. He's absolutely going to get taken, the only question is if he sticks with his new team.
  9. There's a bit of a bullpen crunch with guys who have no options left, including J Guerra, so I'm not entirely surprised they are non-tendering him to save some money and gives other guys a spot. Would you rather have Taylor Williams, for example? (I would.) Plus, Stearns needs to save all this payroll space for his Stephen Strasburg signing.
  10. Just in time for the new three-batter bullpen rule (and with a little selective sampling): 1. CF Lorenzo Cain (.422 wOBA in 2018 against LHP) 2. RF Christian Yelich (.473 wOBA in 2019 against RHP) 3. SS Luis Urias (.404 wOBA in career against LHP) 4. 2B Keston Hiura (.418 wOBA in career against RHP) 5. LF Ryan Braun (.384 wOBA in 2019 against LHP) 6. 3B Travis Shaw (.374 wOBA in 2018 against RHP) 7. C Manny Pina (.316 wOBA in career against LHP) 8. 1B empty (handicap to opposing teams)
  11. I don't really want to watch more current Aguilar at-bats in a year we should be competing. Let a rebuilding team give him a chance for a rebound.
  12. My goodness! On paper this is the most lopsided trade in the Brewers favor that I can remember going through. Not going to read the comments because I'm sure they're 50% people complaining about trading future Cy Young Zach Davies Welcome, Luis Urias!!!
  13. In the sense that all catchers in baseball are platoon guys, sure! Alternatively we can pair him with someone who can catch 40+ games and will not cost $16 million. Pina is valuable insofar as he hits both RHP and LHP equally well. I would target a guy with splits that strongly favor LHP, like Nick Hundley.
  14. He hasn't caught more than 100 games because the Brewers signed Grandal in 2019, Erik Kratz lit on fire down the stretch in 2018, and Stephen Vogt was brought in to be the primary catcher in 2017. In 2016 we still had Lucroy. I don't know if there is any reason to think Pina has durability issues. Of course, a normal (non star) primary catcher is only going to catch 100-120 games anyway.
  15. Why would anyone want a catcher who is terrible defensively and whose own team is actively trying to shop him with three years of control left? I normally don't mind trading defense for offense, but not at catcher on a team with a young, questionable pitching staff.
  16. Why exactly can't Pina be the primary starter? He's not the kind of stud All Star you push to catch 150+ games, but I don't see why he can't catch 120. The backup catcher spot is a bigger concern depending on how they are evaluating Nottingham, but fixing that problem does not require us using our free agency resources when SS, 3B, and possibly 1B are bigger needs (1B depend on whether they plan on moving Braun). I'm perfectly fine with upgrading SS, and having Pina be the boring guy on the team who hits 8th and puts up an average to slightly-below-average 1.0-2.0 WAR season.
  17. Optimistically assuming they have roughly $40 million to spend after making the playoffs, and omitting trades since those are too speculative. Sign Zach Wheeler (4/$72M; +$18M in 2020), sign Didi Gregorious (3/$45M; +$15M in 2020), sign Todd Frazier (1/$7M; +$7M in 2020) C - Pina 1B - Braun/Shaw 2B - Hiura 3B - Frazier/Shaw SS - Gregorious LF - Yelich CF - Cain RF - Grisham SP - Wheeler SP - Woodruff SP - Burnes SP - Nelson SP - Houser/Davies SU - Knebel CL - Hader Alternatively I would sign a couple mid-tier guys like Kyle Gibson and Michael Pineda, but I like going all in for Wheeler because I still believe that Burnes and even Nelson could have bounce back seasons in the rotation (Burnes specially). Frazier and Braun both favor LHP, but can also play against RHP, so having a couple older injury-prone guys lets Shaw split time across the diamond against every RHP. Gregorious is the only clear upgrade to Arcia, who desperately needs to be upgraded, and also a very fun player. FYI those contract figures are based on the Fangraphs community poll, which has already way underestimated Grandal's deal but at least is something more concrete than my own speculation.
