Ryan Braun did not lead his team in OBP the year he was drafted. I'm guessing you would find it's not unusual. Teams draft based on tools and potential, not college performance. I get that. Not trying to overstate the importance of obp when projecting a player. But I'll bet Miami didn't have several players with higher obp. Just interesting for a top 5 pick, could very well mean nothing. I mean, it's not like he had awful college stats. Ray lead the ACC in total bases, was third in home runs, lead in stolen bases by a mile, etc. The reason he didn't have a huge OBP was because he didn't hit .380 AVG like his teammates, but I haven't seen any scouting reports questioning his hit tool. He gets 50/60 hit tool grades.
