  1. Great draft, in my opinion. And for those who haven't been following the Draft forum as closely, we basically picked up an additional second round pick by managing the bonus pool wisely and convincing a highly-regarded high school player to sign from the later rounds (>$1M bonus).
  2. FWIW, I believe Stewart was the SP for the game that Stearns was reportedly in Oklahoma for. His combined line in the minors this season: 92.0 IP, 1.96 ERA, 0.837 WHIP, 10.3 K/9, 1.5 BB/9
  3. I think the point of contention is that while this is technically allowable, it is not at all a common practice and is a very gray area from an ethical standpoint. It was absolutely not deserved from a performance perspective and I really, really hope they made assurances to Davies to make him whole financially. I have no problem with Stearns exploiting things like this, but not if it leads to a bad perception by the players. The fact that Boras is sounding off makes me think that this there weren't any assurances made to Davies, which would be disappointing. Davies deserves better based on his performance. I think it's ethical, it just seems from a practical perspective like it's worth more than $24,000 to the organization not to potentially alienate Davies.
  4. Seriously? Given the sacrifices that military personnel and their families make for this country, I have no problem with restricting civilian fans from this game. Sure, and one member of the military was compensated for his/her sacrifices by getting paid $1000 from this dude for a ticket. It's not like he impersonated a service member - blame the person who sold one of their exclusive tickets if anyone. Maybe I just prefer my baseball with less rabid jingoism though. Generally make sure I'm off buying a hot dog during the post-9/11 mandatory God Bless America.
  5. "Illegal"?? Please I have no problem with this guy.
  6. It's weird how different baseball and basketball are, that Bucks fans are so up set by an upside pick.
  7. I don't want to wade into this trainwreck of a discussion, but the semantics of whether it is "racist" or just "xenophobic" is kind of irrelevant, don't you think?
  8. Castillo isn't so bad really, just not what Boston was hoping for when they gave him that much money. He's got a .680 OPS for his career (337 PA) but elite defense in CF/OF, so he's a starting caliber player. By comparison, Gerardo Parra had a 4.5 fWAR season in 2013 with a .726 OPS and elite defense in RF/CF. I would gladly take on Castillo if we were paying the league minimum.
  9. Flores is basically Yuni B but with good defense. Which is actually a passable major league asset, but not exactly someone we need to trade for (especially in a Lucroy trade, and especially given that we already have Villar and Arcia). ------- Continued here: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=34203
  10. Defense translates......I gave zero doubt about Arcia's defense at the next level. His bat is what is unknown but he will get every chance to succeed. As mentioned a few posts above, Villar was considered an excellent defender in the minors, and I think most would agree he is subpar in the majors (at shortstop).
  11. Arcia has 0 days of MLB experience. There is a distinct chance he totally flops and/or his defense does not translate well to the majors. Since Villar looks like a credible starting SS at this point, it makes sense to give Arcia some versatility so he could, if necessary, get playing time elsewhere or platoon with Scooter or whatever.
  12. How? It's not prohibited by the contract as far as I know, and in any event the team could just make up some excuse (kind of like Houston did a couple years ago). Corey Ray is an elite talent though, I don't see any reason to think anyone we picked at #6 next year would be better.
  13. Fangraphs suggested that De Leon has a higher ceiling than even Urias, and so far he has 21 K in 11.0 IP this season. I wouldn't be upset about him headlining a return!
  14. I disagree, I think evaluators knew there was a significant chance Gomez turned back into a pumpkin (which he did). Trade chatter and rumors suggest that when healthy Lucroy is highly regarded by front offices thoughout the majors. Nice work, A Swing. I disagree about most of the guys you list as "untouchables" but I suppose it doesn't hurt for fans to be conservative in getting out expectations up.
  15. A trade headlined by (three years of) a #3 starter returning from Tommy John surgery, and a 1B/DH prospect with a career .737 OPS in the minors? No thanks...
  16. #1 target should obviously be Blake Beers. Then we can draft Seth Beer two years (?) from now and fulfill our destiny.
  17. I don't think a team like the Mets is going to trade a key major league piece like Matz or Harvey for Lucroy. Their intention is to win a World Series, so giving away a current contributor is a big ask. The reason they want to unload Wheeler so badly is that he's not currently contributing.
  18. Alternative question: is there a better SP than Daniel Norris that the Brewers could realistically expect to acquire for Lucroy? Debatable who is better between Norris and De Leon from the Dodgers. If frontline pitching is one of our priorities, Norris is the potential ace we've been waiting for.
  19. Didn't realize Demi was only nine months older than Lara. Nice!
  20. I think a deal centered around Norris would be fair. Don't see why we need McCann or Salty though, and Moya is sort of an odd throw-in. I would prefer, say: LHP Daniel Norris 3B/OF JaCoby Jones (having a great season at AA/AAA) RHP Joe Jimenez (lights-out RP prospect)
  21. aaaaaaaaaaand we're done here Settle down, Beavis.
  22. Whether you want to admit it or not, I have a better chance of banging Margot Robbie than we do of acquiring Lucas Giolito or Yoan Moncada for Lucroy. But keep up the good work. Giolito probably not, because the Nationals do not need a catcher that badly and because they need Giolito in their rotation going forward. But not because of the ridiculous notion (popular on the internet) that top prospects are untradeable, even for star-caliber major league contributors. Prospects are simply not that valuable. As for Moncada, here is [sarcasm]notorious pro-Brewers shill[/sarcasm] MLB Trade Rumors just the other day:
  23. [sarcasm]New York media: Mets must trade for Jonathan Lucroy — even if it means giving up Bartolo Colon[/sarcasm]
  24. I'm not sure teams value draft picks highly enough that they would do this. Maybe if every player you drafted was a top-15 talent, but those aren't the guys that slip through to later rounds due to signability concerns. You would be getting ten players that teams were valuing as (maybe) lower-first-round, second-round talents. Would a team really want to spend the equivalent of $60M just to sign a bunch of second-round guys?
