  1. He was coaching on Thursday against the Giants.
  2. Excellent article by Tom Verducci: https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/03/01/bryce-harper-philadelphia-phillies-contract-scott-boras
  3. How about we gather all the facts before jumping to the punishment phase?
  4. It's pretty obvious to me why Machado and Harper took the most guaranteed money over the potential for more money. They can have a career ending injury tomorrow and they are getting PAID. A bird in the hand...
  5. Both Machado and Harper took the max guaranteed money. As I would expect. And I think both the Padres and Phillies are going to regret these deals. And I will laugh when their fans are complaining years from now.
  6. I don't understand the opt outs that teams are granting. If I'm guaranteeing a guy 7-10 years of guaranteed income no matter how he performs (or if), no way am I giving him the opportunity to leave early if he thinks the contract is undervalued.
  7. You can say what you want, but this is not a good omen.
  8. What have they lost? They haven't had anything taken away. Many have lost the guaranteed high dollar contracts in their 30s that players of the Suppan/Garza/Lohse era enjoyed. So they've lost the stupid contracts? Which nearly everyone here at the time knew was stupid? We need to require teams to sign more stupid contracts!
  9. Ok, this is just weird now. I was in favor of this signing but Lawrie's inability to do any baseball activities does not bode well for the future.
  10. If the players strike for any length of time I'm done with baseball. I did not watch a baseball game between 1995 and 1999 due to the strike. They do it again and I'm through.
  11. What have they lost? They haven't had anything taken away.
  12. This guy will be fat and lazy by year 5, a la Miguel Cabrera. Padres just got fleeced.
  13. I absolutely would take the Marwin Gonzalez deal over the Moose deal.
  14. To me that is exactly the problem with handing out ultra long contracts. It's hard enough to project 3-4 years into the future let alone 10.
  15. "A turd is a turd whether it sinks or floats." - Ron Wolf
  16. Human nature > stats. Machado is a turd. I'm sure plenty of turds have signed long term deals and done just fine. If you would want your team to invest $300 million to see how it turns out--have at it. No way would I want my team to risk that money.
  17. Who does this guy represent? Does he have Wisconsin roots? How did he land here?
  18. Human nature > stats. Machado is a turd.
  19. What are people basing this on? He's been really really good the last 4 years except 1 (.265 BABIP, power was down though, not sure about why). He's 26. He plays a semi-premium position extremely well. He plays every day. He didn't make sense for Milwaukee, but damn, if I were a Padres fan I'd be thrilled. I base this on the fact that a player who already had character concerns just guaranteed himself $300 million no matter how poorly he plays.
  20. I think the White Sox are going to be glad they lost this bidding war. Not today, but 5 years from today.
  21. He played like that to get a fat contract. He just got it. I see an Albert Haynesworth-like future. We already know that Machado is a low character guy. Like Haynesworth.
  22. Is agent39 Joshua Kusnick?
  23. The Padres will regret this deal. I don't see Machado being motivated enough for this to pay off now that he can count on $300 million in the bank no matter how he plays.
  24. I hope Shaw spent the winter taking ground balls at second and working on his pivot. I'm not a big fan of Moose (don't hate him either) but I'm OK with this move only because it puts Shaw at 2B instead of Flotsam and Jetsam. I would have preferred a real 2B (Murphy, Dozier, Cabrera, or Walker) with Shaw at 3B though.
  25. I hate PC culture but I'm fine with this change because it actually makes sense. No one says "Ryan Braun is disabled so he's going to miss a couple of weeks." You'd say he's injured. In fact you'd say it a lot.
