  1. I did a quick whip around MLB to look for teams that might be interested in Gonzalez as a starting SS. This is what I came up with: Pirates Diamondbacks Twins A's Red Sox It sounds like Stephen Drew will sign with the A's so they would be out. The Red Sox might stick with the slick fielding, no hitting Jose Iglesias (after trading Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays for manager John Farrell). The Cardinals are said to be interested but they have Rafael Furcal coming back.
  2. $150 million for Greinke is crazy money. I realize that timing is everything but there's no way Greinke should be the pitcher with the 2nd largest contract in MLB history. But I will say that given how things are playing out, I'm ecstatic that the Brewers got Jean Segura and two pitching prospects for him.
  3. Tom H. reports the Brewers have a standing offer to Alex Gonzalez. http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/brewers-melvin-decides-moves-not-worth-risks-rm7uasq-182476251.html I would love to have Gonzalez back as insurance against Jean Segura not panning out for 2013.
  4. The Marlins should be contracted. Or forcibly removed from Loria.
  5. Looks like the Brewers are kicking the tires on Josh Hamilton: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/20686156/brewers-seriously-thinking-about-making-a-play-for-josh-hamilton I'd be interested if the price was a bargain--but I don't see it happening.
  6. The writer rips the Pirates for "not changing a thing." And then rips them for running a minor league boot camp--which seems like quite the change to me.
  7. It certainly may be the end, but because he throws with his left hand and doesn't rely on velocity to get people out I wouldn't rule out a return to a MLB roster.
  8. Baseballreference.com has Trout at 8.6 at oWAR and Cabrera at 7.5 oWAR. Trout is 2.2 dWAR and Cabrera is -0.2 dWAR. So even just measuring offensive WAR Trout comes out on top.
  9. So you don't care about defense when it comes to the MVP award?
  10. So if Josh Hamilton hits 2 HR's on the last day of the season Cabrera's season would be less valuable to the Tigers? The triple crown is a great accomplishment and worthy of praise--but the triple crown itself does not = an MVP award.
  11. It's a nice accomplishment but since the MVP includes such things as playing defense and running bases, I would give the award to Mike Trout. What makes Trout's 49 SB's even more impressive is that he was caught stealing only 5 times! Trout also had a higher OPS+. And to those who say that Miggy lead his team to the playoffs--the Angels actually won more games than the Tigers. It's not Trout's fault that the Angels played in a stronger division.
  12. Gamel doesn't get a sniff of the 2013 starting lineup unless there's an injury to Corey Hart or Aoki.
  13. So you like watching baseball games with some jackwagons screaming "WOO" every 30 seconds? Interesting. no, I just have the ability to ignore it. I know, mindblowing... The fact that you have a high tolerance for annoying behavior doesn't mean that other people have a problem. You probably have no problems with the knuckleheads who yell "Get in the hole" when a golfer tees off on a par 4.
  14. So you like watching baseball games with some jackwagons screaming "WOO" every 30 seconds? Interesting.
  15. I really don't care who's doing it or why. But I want it to stop. Now. I watched much of the Pittsburgh series with the mute on.
  16. Casey Stengel and Earl Weaver, among others, would strongly agree with you. Myself included.
  17. Can anyone answer for me, or refer me to articles explaining this: What prompted Aoki to come to the MLB in the first place? When he signed with the Brewers he wasn't guaranteed a starting position. It seems odd to me that a star starting Japanese player would come to the U.S. when they don't even know if they would be starting and also sign for a relatively modest salary ($1.5 million per year). Did he just have a burning desire to see how he would fare in the highest level baseball league there is?
  18. Could someone smarter than me explain why Segura was at 2B in the first place? Was he blocked by a better shortstop prospect? Because usually teams want their middle infield prospects with the arm for it to play SS until they prove they can't.
  19. Let's try to keep this thread about Jean Segura and not about the difference between AA and AAA talent. As to Segura, last 14 games (which doesn't even include tonight's 2-4 with a double and a triple) is .455/.556/.500/1.056. Nice. It certainly seems like he's turned the corner at the plate. At this point I'd be fine with handing the 2013 starting SS job to him. In the field I think he's been decent (I'm not as high on his defense as others here). But given the fact that he hasn't played SS for that long, he has some major upside in the field. The future looks bright for Jean Segura.
  20. Not with Travis Ishikawa and Taylor Green already on the roster.
  21. That's why you sign Marcum to one year deal (if possible). It gives you veteran presence without a long-term contract.
  22. Well the Brewers have a judgment to make for 2013, small sample size or not. And the thread is called "Impressions of Jean Segura" not "Do you think Jean Segura is going to be a great player in the future or will he be a sucky disappointment?"
  23. I have no problem with bringing up Segura this year. I think there's a lot of value in getting his feet wet and learning what MLB pitching is all about. It was a lost season when they brought him up so no harm there. But what we've found is that Segura is not MLB ready right now. Let him learn from it and start 2013 in AAA and be better for it. I'd rather have Gonzalez than Bianchi though. I'm not ready to write off 2013.
  24. So Jean Segura has been up nearly a month. What are your impressions? As of this writing he has an OPS+ of 32, OBP of .250 and SLG of .239. Not good. That said, he's really young and MLB history is chock full of good to great players who really stunk it up in their first few months of play. How comfortable are you going into 2013 with Segura starting at SS? Personally, I'd like to see Alex Gonzalez back on a 1 year deal and have Segura start 2013 in AAA to get more experience and, hopefully, confidence.
