    One of my all time favorites so I am really happy. But you have to feel cautious about the capsule injury in his shoulder. As far as I know there isn’t a great track record for pitchers with that and he will be 32 in 2025.

    Frelick has the athleticism and arm to play third or second but does he have the accuracy to first on his throws? That’s a totally different skill set than from the outfield. I think it’s great that it’s come this far because our decision makers think he can do it.

    Did mine…wish we could do 30 (would match the MLB top 30 lists) or at least 25.

    I have always agreed with Hader on this point. There are also times where it’s not the the ninth that’s as big of a deal as an earlier inning. Suppose the ninth is the bottom part of the order but in the eighth, the middle of the order is up and maybe a runner or two gets on. The hold doesn’t really capture that value and it’s arguably a more important event than retiring the bottom three in the ninth for a technical save.

    I like Rogers but that would make a heavily lefty-laden rotation with Miley, Gasser, Ashby, and Hall already in the mix. I wonder if the Brewers would prefer Max Meyer or possibly Cabrera back from Miami. A framework around one of those pitchers makes sense though. The other two guys aren’t attractive for the Brewers IMO. Something would have to be changed to make it make sense to deal Wiemer. Even lotto tickets.

    That’s entirely fair. But I made that point with more recent drafting in mind under the current regime, with guys like Tyler Black, who went around 34, and Jacob M who went even a bit later. In terms of the draft, I have liked our process much more in recent years. In prior regimes, the FO members would come out in the media and talk about how they liked tall, protectable starting pitchers like Jungmann, Bradley, Fredrickson, and Eric Arnett. They had a type and it failed spectacularly. The current regime has been drafting with much more sophistication. Some of these young guys are bubbling up now and time will tell how they all do. But right now I am far more bullish on our process than what we were doing 10 or more years ago.

    DL Hall is someone I followed since his draft year. He was someone I had on my short list for the Brewers back then. I want to say that was the Hiura year but I’d have to double check. He’s got very good arm talent and was always a top 100 prospect. I have to wonder why he was never able to get stretched out so I can’t comment on whether he can be a starter. But he can be very strong reliever at a minimum. That 34th pick can be huge. If you convert that into a top 100 prospect, then you’ve received three top 100’s.

    Why don’t the sports leagues just develop their own streaming business and sell it DTC, cutting out the middleman? Isn’t that more profitable? There may be an initial capital expense, but ultimately it would be all gravy. One way or another, they will have a product that consumers will pay for. My interest is getting the Brewers the most favorable cut. The more this can be a shared enterprise, the better.

    Good article. If he can get to that middle level at a consistent rate then I think he can be a regular. Hopefully he’s getting stronger in the offseason. He definitely needs more pop. Player development can be an arduous process. But if you can get to that middle average and OBP plus add some more pop, he can be a plus player. He’s very athletic so there is hope for development. I am also intrigued by Oliver Dunn. I think there is some pop there although he may be far less versatile.

    I didn’t realize he had such a solid year. He’d be a good get but what to give up is a dilemma. PS enjoy your work, Tim. I like your interviews with Sparky and your written content.

    Gut feel. Brewers and Yankees make a deal for Burnes within the week. Yanks are motivated and far more decisive than their rival Orioles. I think there’s a good match here to be had.

    Agree completely that the Yankees seem to be the best fit both ways for a trade that makes sense. Hampton, Arias, and another pitcher who has the peripherals they like in terms of movement and spin rate would make sense.

    Very good stuff, Spencer (and Joseph). Love the insights and info. I am confident that the data you provided is the reason the Brewers wanted this precise pitcher. No, he’s not ranked highly, but the Brewers obviously liked his particular metrics. I think if we are lucky we get a Mike Fiers caliber pitcher. He was very solid for a period.

    Gross. Doesn’t seem realistic. The trade out would be Burnes and the Burnes comp pick which is a high pick. Scherzer at age 39 and the middle of a season landed the Mets their top prospect in Acuna’s little brother. Burnes is worth considerably more than that. Brewers aren’t taking spare parts for Burnsie. When fans write articles, they love to trade their spare parts and redundancies for elite players, lol. The acquiring team needs to feel pain or else it’s not realistic.

    Last year might have been my favorite draft as far as I can remember. Knock on wood. Famous last words, right? Now watch it crash and burn! Love Tod Johnson. I say that as someone who relentlessly hated our draft process for many years and I took a beating on this site over it.

    Outstanding article, Cheesehead. Please write more!! I am expecting us to have a heavy pitching draft between college and juco pitchers. I was surprised like you were with how many high school guys we took last year, but it makes more sense when you consider they took advantage of one of their inefficiencies, drafting later and paying them far above slot as an opportunity to upgrade as many picks above grade as possible.

    Texas might be my favorite trade partner if we can get Porter and others. I definitely want pitching back with upside. Then I have no problem dealing Williams to Baltimore for a package involving Mayo. I’m comfortable with the back of the bullpen headlined by Uribe, Megill, and Milner. You’d still have Payamps in a setup role. Upcoming infield involving Mayo, Black, Dunn, Turang and Wilken in the next couple of years. Personally I would extend Adames since Burnes and Williams would be gone and there would be money. Adames has leadership qualities that can be overlooked when looking at stats. Young starting pitching with Gasser, Porter, Rodriguez, hopefully Mis. Good young OF. That young core would be exciting to build from. Hopefully we hit college pitching hard in the ‘24 draft and international market.

    One of my favorite prospects. Love his profile. Would like to see how he develops on breaking pitches going away from him. Can he be patient and go the other way? May determine a lot. That’s a tough skill.
