  1. Interesting interview from Foul Territory on an Athletic piece by Evan Drellich. Manfred apparently wants to push for revenue sharing on local TV rights with a salary cap. Union will fight to the death on it. The question is convincing the players it’s a win for them too. For example, could someone like Bregman make more if more teams get in there.

  3. Has there been any connection between Moncada and the Brewers? I’ve seen the Blue Jays and Cubs mentioned. I wonder what kind of contract he will command?
  4. Good podcast and appreciated getting my question answered. Love the baseball talk on a cold December day.
  5. 1. By eschewing prospects as the return, I think the Brewers are far more comfortable with their long range prospects as is, especially with the recent draft classes, a number of top international prospects and six high draft picks slots coming in 2025. The bigger gap was at the MLB level. 2. I would have hoped for more roster control on a SP but clearly they felt they needed to get a quality guy there. 3. Regarding Durbin, they certainly liked his profile. I’m hoping he’s our new utility guy who can move around. I hope his arm is strong enough for third. If we go take a risk on a 3B with pop who may not be a sure bet, Durbin might be a hedge and hopefully be a big upgrade over Monasterio in that role. 4. I hope Tyler Black goes into the Jake Bauers spot. Would like to see him get some consistent ABs. I can’t see him at third or second.
  6. I agree with the premise that we have enough flexibility with Ortiz and Turang that we wouldn’t be locked into only getting a 3B. But Murphy’s comments suggest the preference would be to leave Brice at 2B and you can move Ortiz to SS then with his stronger arm. There are some 3B options. With our history with Stearns, I wonder if we can get a guy like Brett Baty in exchange for a decent bullpen arm. We made the Taylor trade last year so there may be an opportunity there. Baty is a natural 3B. But even if you get Baty, with his weak MLB track record, you may want to upgrade the utility spot from Monasterio in case Baty can’t figure it out and you need another guy to step in. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/12/mets-trade-rumors-brett-baty-starting-pitching.html
  7. Love the idea behind these podcasts. Length doesn’t bother me in the slightest. As for questions, maybe which players from the DSL you expect to see in Carolina and what we might expect in terms of adjustments and progress (eg, signs of ability to face breaking pitches, etc) ?
  8. Yes but I think you meant to say Levonas who we didn’t sign with the 67th pick. So I think we get the 68th pick as a replacement. According to Baseball America, this year’s draft is supposedly shaping to be better on paper (at least at this early projection).
  9. Las Vegas is growing but I wonder if it’s still early for them. I’d think Carolina pitched as like a regional team would be the top of the list and then maybe Nashville.
  10. My votes 1. Henderson. No brainer 2. EMJ yes because he took a big step forward and his circumstance just changed accordingly. I could see a team like Miami or the like jumping on him if not protected. There are tools here and don’t rule out that he ends up more solid than more ballyhooed prospects like Wilken or even Adams. 3. Crow. Probably. They traded a decent asset in Taylor for him. They like his movement and he can potentially get in line to soak up innings. 4. Smith. Iffy and I lean toward no because reliever value not as high and his stuff is unremarkable. 5. Patrick. Doubtful. He’s been a fan favorite but it’s telling the FO literally never moved him up despite having many opportunities to do so. If you look under the hood, the metrics are not as impressive and that’s probably why there’s a disconnect from how the Brewers didn’t move him but the fans have been on his bandwagon. 6. Clarke. Out of the question.
  11. I’ve got this guy ahead of Wilken. Boeve has a chance to be special in terms of OBP. He just gets on base and avoids K’s. The question is position. I am bullish.
  12. Great summary but I think it’s Coleman Crow.
  13. His WAR was legitimately outstanding. Second among all second basemen is incredible. His SB offsets some of his lack of power and isn’t necessarily captured in his hitting metrics. A guy who singles a lot but steals second gets you to the same spot as a double. It’s not equal because stealing has a risk. But stolen bases also function to harass pitchers from their focus on the next batter, the first baseman is covering less ground holding the runner, etc. Brice is still an ascending player who needs to get more consistent and work on his stamina. I feel like he wears down at times. I think you will see that as the next phase of his development. When people are mystified by the Brewers’ success when they look at the team on paper, Turang is the type of guy that gets mis-read. This a high quality player and Murph has been right about believing in him.
  14. Great way to frame it. I’d say one mid tier and two lottos, or possibly the two mid tiers. Either would be better than a comp pick. The organization likes to get back control and it works in terms of roster sustainability in a small market. The Brewers have metrics and analytics they like that will help identify the prospects. They won’t take back guys without those attributes.
  15. Hayes is an interesting option that I hadn’t thought of. I have liked him going back to the draft process as he was a guy I wanted us to draft back then. I am hoping for one of Hayes, McMahon or Moncada. They can make salary room by discarding dollars elsewhere to pay for one of them. Then trade Williams for prospects with good analytics although I would not expect a haul in terms of name value and pedigree. Keep the young OF corps. Hope ascending players like Frelick, Mitchell, Turang and Ortiz keep improving and that Chourio keeps it going. The defense orientation should continue. The bullpen looks strong on paper even without DW and hopefully they can continue to piece together a solid rotation. Still bullish with a steady stream of prospects developing.
  16. Great article, Jake. Good data. Mike Boeve is another guy. He might not be ready out of the gate but all he does is hit. 300 AB at Double A with an .820 OPS and .306 average. If he starts 2025 at AAA and performs similarly, he could be a mid-season factor. He bats left handed. He’s from the same neck of the woods as Wade Boggs and has that type of look and approach (although I’m not comparing his ability to a guy with 3000 hits and in the HOF).
  17. @Joseph Zarr what would you say is the level of play? About equivalent to AA?
  18. I don’t think a division winner should be subjected to a three game playoff. Having said that, IMO our angst is exacerbated by the fact that we haven’t found a year where we overachieved and stole a short series from a better team. Maybe we are due and we will get there soon based on luck of the draw. But so far it hasn’t been our thing.
  19. It’s moot because he’s leaving but not only did he have an .800 OPS and very good run-producing stats for a SS, but he is well known for intangibles that aren’t seen on a stat sheet but are crucial to winning such as leadership, resilience, etc. To me it’s a foregone conclusion that he’s gone and certainly the Brewers have known for at least a year. So I’m sure they are building contingencies for adding an IF with run production capability. Trotting out a weak bat with Ortiz and Turang isn’t going to work. That would be three of four IF dragging down team power.
  20. I like Frelick. There’s a sparkplug factor. There’s a fire and competitiveness. Toughness. He seems well built with thick legs and a nice, efficient swing without wasted movement. But he’s got to drive the ball. He had 2 homers and around 30 rbi and an OPS that’s too low relative to his average. Those numbers are really anemic for as much as he plays. It’s not like he was at the top of the order either. His body tells me he’s capable of getting extra base hits and tapping into some gap power. To me, this is crucial for his development. With his legs, he can develop power to drive the ball and it’s not like his upper body is scrawny. He was an accomplished football player. As a third baseman or corner OF, you need a higher OPS especially with Adames’ .800 OPS coming off the books from a traditionally non-run producing position. We need pop at 3rd to compensate. I’d love to see him do it but it’s a leap of faith right now. Something is off with the approach.
  21. If we hold Devin, wouldn’t we get a high pick back if he leaves via free agency? So that helps the return. Even though his stats are great, I’m skeptical on a great return. If we get someone in an organizational list from about 7-10 and a couple of other guys with peripherals we like (control, spin rate, breaks and movement, etc), that might be what we get. If we can get a pick like we did with the Burke selection, that’s possible too. I will be pleasantly surprised if we get a haul. I’m expecting analytic darlings who aren’t greatly ranked. Maybe one prospect on the lower end of the top 100. But, the alternate draft pick status means teams need to make it worth our while. We have a good pen without him and I expect Yoho to add to it.
  22. A guy like DeJong makes sense. Good pop and only 31. He could be a good bridge until hopefully Pratt and Made get here (hopefully) over the next 2-3 years. Boeve may be MLB ready by mid-year too to split PT. I hope Tyler Black gets more of a chance as a DH or Swiss Army knife. Now that Jackson, Sal, Garrett and Brice have gotten their feet wet, maybe they can all take a step forward as their comfort levels increase. That could offset the delta between Adames and a guy like DeJong. With Yoho coming up, I think we can withstand trading Devin.
