  1. I honestly cannot think of why you would trade Lohse. We actually have three 'number 2' pitchers, IMO. And that can make you do well in the playoffs. With our offense - and three very good starters and at least one more good one (Estrada - who is a three pitching in the four spot) - we honestly should just play and see what happens. If we are really poor this year that will tend to say we will be poor next year, too. So, if we are dead in the water in July, then I guess everyone is available. As dead in July this year, means dead all of 2014 - and likely 2015. In that case you would try to do an A's and trade all your older expensive, good, guys... Lohse, Gallardo, Rameriz... for AA / AAA prospects. The more I think about it... with good to very good starters and a very, very good offense, if we are no good this year, it will be bleak times for a couple of years, unless you are finding three young number two style starters. It seems sad to me the Segura and Gomez are playing like Hall of Famers and the team is struggling. That is really sad.
  2. I think when Hart is back you move Weeks to number 8 in the lineup. You bring up Gennett and do a platoon-of-sorts. Yuni is on the bench to fill in - in all spots. Alex G is Gone. And I guess Lalli is back to AAA.
  3. I only picked up some info on GameDay. Peralta was 96 mph with 4 seam in the 6th. 94 with two seam. I saw a bundle of changes (I think to a lefty), then he struck him out on a slider. I love how his changeup is 86. A bit like some of our guys fastballs. Does he have a curve? Anyway... there are four pitches 4 seam, 2 seam, slider, change. Honestly, if you are throwing a sinker at 94 mph, you likely can throw that all day. How that translates into a number FOUR potential, I dont agree with.
  4. Scooter on 'range factor', if you can compare MLB to the minors, is a bit better than Weeks. A 4.8ish for Gennett to 4.5ish guy (Weeks is actually around 4.1 now - but was 4.5 - I am not sure if the ankle caused the last two year drop). It does look like Scooter dovetales well... with two options years left (this and next), then I guess Weeks will be gone after next year. So you end up with a league minimum, average, left hand 2nd baseman. It would not be bad. It would be great if Scooter had a really good year - to prove he is growing. You cant have all $10 mill players on the roster.
  5. This week on MythBusters. Dougie and Ronnie put to the test the age old accepted urban myth: if you fill up a major league roster with backup shortstops and backup catchers and the injury prone AND you play them in different and random postions each night, the results will be unspectacular. Tune in to see. Myth... TRUE ....or ... BUSTED
  6. If we are a .500 team, the odds of winning 8 in a row are 2^8 = one in 256. Maybe we are better than a .500 team. I love my reads about the Crew in the media with the word 'red-hot' always the preface to the bullpen... the 'red-hot bullpen' this and the 'red-hot bullpen' that. Cool.
  7. Axford should not see any inning greater than SIX until he throws a few at 98. The guy has no chance to succeed throwing straight as an arrow at 93 /94. Keep putting him out there in the 6th (maybe 7th, mabye mop up) until he is throwing 98. Why does he not actually even TRY another pitch? K-Rod. Well, the guy does have a long, long history of success. The chance of him not being up in 30 days is very, very remote.
  8. I am so interested in the sabre guys who say there is no such thing at clutch. And yet, we seemingly have a plethora of pitchers in MLB who can pitch in the 6yh and 7th inning. But if they need to throw in the 8th... it is 50/50 if they can perform. And in the 9th... no, no, no chance. The occasion is just too big for them. Dare I ask... if there is no such thing as clutch... why cannot a reliever pitch to his ability in 'any' inning he must pitch. Should we blindfold them and tell them it is the 6th inning and we are down by 8 runs... so they can perform. And yet... clutch does not exist. How can all this contradictory information be so?
  9. I am happy that my wine induced statement of 'we have a #1 or #2 guy for $11 mill' is the winner over the 'meh, he is a 4 or 5 guy' I am looking forward to giving up the #1 pick next year at the end of spring training for the next 'hard done by', Boras client. It seems to me the 'qualifying offer', friendless free agent is the new, new, new Moneyball. We can have production for 2 to 4 years at a good price, or we can waste a couple million on a project from Greenland. I trust much more a couple years of a real baseball player vs the next dumb 1st round draft pick the Crew can work out.
  10. Sorry, I did not read all the comments, just the last couple of pages. Thank God this happened to him. And thank God there was no one hurt. I say thank God, because these sorts of happenings are a wake up call that many people need. Mine came driving to church one evening. Really! I stayed at work with some friends and drank a lot of wine. Went home to the wife on the bus. We had a church meeting. So off we went. But, for some darn reason, I could not find the church. I drove around in circles for like 1 hour. Finally, I got on the right way (it was only our 2nd time to this church and it was in a weird dead end location). So, when I finally got on the right street, and 100 meters from the church, I was pulled over for a random check. I blew. The cop said 'wow, good thing for you, you were not here one hour ago, you are JUST JUST JUST under'. Yo will be fine if he learns from this. It is so dumb to put others at risk. From a human viewpoint, I am happy, thank God this happened to him. I am ashamed that 'maybe' I put others at risk. When I am drunk now, I never drive to church. I never drive at all!
  11. Is there a minimum number of at bats to qualify for Silver Slugger and/or Gold Glove?
  12. Fiers in his first inning was 90 and 91 mph on the 4 seamer. In the next inning he was back to his 88 mph. With his 'deception' and four pitches, if he can throw 91 mph, maybe he indeed is destined to be a good, good 1 or 2 inning guy. We could sure use ONE - even ONE.
  13. My pain is picking a Maine fireballer in 2004 over a Texas fireballer. Only the Brewers could think Maine high school form was better than Texas high school form. I wonder if the Crew will be opening up acadamies in Greenland, Iceland, and Scotland. Would one call it the 'new' Moneyball?
  14. Surely you would trade Gonzalez, wouldnt you. Good for Alex. Good for Jays. And you would get something decent back. Even a reliever. Do we need a reliever? I am happy with StoneFeet as a backup to Segura until Biaca comes back from AA - when did we sign a Biaca? Actually, Prince is a shortstop, too. Why do we have three shortstops on our team with another ready to come back. Does that balance the three catchers - and no first baseman and no third baseman. This is indeed an odd roster.
  15. Morris OPS is .897 right now in his small sample at AAA. And I hear he is a first baseman!
  16. We are a funny mob. When one of our players goes into a funk - or is just playing bad for a long time - we just say 'oh, well, just trade him for someone(s) else who are really good'. We are in a LOT of trouble right now. That is becuase we have can have lineups with 3+ guys expected to have an OPS around .600. And our bullpen is so bad. So we cannot think to score to many runs. And we cannot think to hang onto many leads we may stumble upon. And, I cannot forsee any change in direction. If it were me, I would 1) have a four man rotation then the 'bullpen' game every 5th 2) put Weeks back in the two spot no matter what 3) let Lucroy bat cleanup; he seems to have some ticker and will not fall into a screaming heap batting fourth 4) pray
  17. What worries me, as a fan, is that I am happy we managed to win one game in the series. I will almost be 'satisfied' if we can go 1-2 every series and say 'good one, we did not get swept'. Looking at the four man rotation and the potential offense, that is a silly thing to feel. But the mojo on this team is no hope. Most crap teams have a bunch of young, new guys and you hope they will improve. Our current hope is a bunch of old, never been good, guys. It is depressing.
  18. How many games do we need to watch before we are allowed to have an opinion?
  19. It is kinda funny I read how bad Morris is hitting at AAA. So I post his OPS at AAA. And I am told I should not post that as sample too small So an untruth about his small sample AAA line is justification that he should not be up. But a truthful correction of the untruth is not allowed It does though explain why Doug did not bring him up. Doug 'thinks' (must have heard somewhere) he is doing badly at AAA
  20. I agree it would be nice to give Morris more time. Just like it would have been good to give Maldonado more time. But sometimes injuries force a prospect to come up early. It is a fact of life. I think it is unfair to cherry pick the worst stats you can find from 2+ years ago re Morris. Very Unfair. In 2013 (so far) at AAA Morris has a 1.232 OPS In 2012 at AA Morris had a .920 OPS (and a .995 fielding %) In 2011 between A+ and AA he combined for had .770 OPS I remember a guy who oddly was not thought of as any sort of a prospect. And he just kept improving each level he advanced. So he would go UP a level and his stats would IMPROVE. Corey Hart. I do not trust the organisation that puts a third string shortstop at first base over an AA MVP. To me it seemed the Brewers had a wonderful 'no lose' opportunity. Let Morris play two months. It does not really matter (make or break his career) if he is not a world beater. He gets an amazing amount of experience and in two months you send him down. He will not complain. And likely he will do OK. (based on his 'body of work' to date) I really wish 'the organization' would explain why a 2nd/3rd string shortstop and/or backup catchers are playing first base.... over a AA MVP. It just makes not one iota of sense - except to 'the organization'. Mind you, it all does come down to performance on the field. How is that going for 'the organization'.
  21. When JJ came up, it took him a month to hit a ball out of the infield. Escobar was a terrible hitter when he first came up. Maldonado was FORCED onto the roster by Lucroy's injury - and Martin had no level of batting success in the minors. Each one of these guys showed you should indeed bring guys up and allow them to grow. re Morris - I think his minor's performance shows that potentially he can be quite good. And he did win a gold glove. So, to crucify Doug for bringing up Morris based on his body of work - in the situation we find ourselves in - would be silly... no matter what Morris does. So, I think it is not good logic to say 'well, Doug knows Morris is no good, so Doug is correct to have third string shortstops playing first base'. Heck, anyone is versatile. I mean you can take the guy from row 2 and give him a glove. Does that make him versatile because he can stand near first base with a glove. I do not know the A's example referred to. But I heard the words versatile and athletic. Does that apply to the guys we are putting on the field?
  22. I am so happy that in the year 2019 Morris will be a $million dollars cheaper, because in 2013 he was kept down. I am thinking Doug is really beginning to lean toward the long term aspects of roster management. And our best defensive catcher will not play catcher anymore.
  23. I understand all the interesting discussion on our roster except where (re first base) the defenders? of the roster say 'Morris makes/made sense but for WHATEVER REASON he was not used'. Did you all hear Ueck on Maldonado's back hand error at first in the 9th. Ueck said 'that shows you just cannot put anybody there at first'. He pretty much said it would be good if the Brewers had a first baseman at first. Ueck said anybody, of course, can catch a ball thrown to them, but...' Now, thinking about Morris - why would you not even try. He did win the gold glove at AA last year. But maybe minors gold gloves are like the majors... another batting award. But, 'for whatever reason...'
  24. I guess then the Brewers' drafters just are on a different page to the other talent evaluators. I keep hearing, from non Brewer people, that guy has a 'high floor, low ceiling'. If the Crew thinks drafting Big 10 4 year college arms are 'high ceiling' picks, then I stand corrected - re the attitude. I guess I would then worry about the talent evaluation. I recall the Rogers over Bailey pick. That was some of the weirdest talent evaluation. And most evaluators at the time said the same thing. I am not big in knowing the abilities of the draft candidates. So when I take the Brewer goggles off, and look at what others say, it makes me scratch my head. (ha ha, mind you, Prince was head scratcher if you believed all but the Crew - but overall, the Brewers do seem to be on a different page to the rest, and, so far, that page aint working out very well)
  25. I guess I am completely SAD at the mental approach. When you lead off and are two runs down you would never swing at 3-0. When the fastest runner on the team is on 3rd, one out, one run down, you would never look at fastballs near the plate. Physical failures I can handle as a fan. Blatant brain freezes are a bit hard to accept. And I speak from experience. There have been times I have been completely overmatched in games - at bat - but new the guy on third was really fast. And with less than two out I have managed a slow roller to score the run. I KNEW watching fastballs near the plate was not an option. How in the world does any amatuer player know that - but a professional getting paid 10 mill a year does not know that. (I dont recall a scenario of being up in the count 3-0, leading off an inning, two runs down, and having to TAKE the next pitch. But I am sure anyone knows that. Just not the Brewers) I am sad today. Losing is not sad. Failing is not sad. DUMBNESS is sad. (I am sad also about having no first baseman on the team - that is organizational dumbness. So I guess I am organizationally sad)
