  1. Nice thing that most people overlook is that he is a guy who has ability to take walks. His OBP is usually .100 higher than his average. His issue is his contact/average. If he can mustard out .220-.240....that is a .320-.340 Obp. I will gladly take 35 HR 80 RBIs with a .320-.340 Obp. His K's will get annoying... He has no real splits difference between lefties and righties. Overall all a good sign and he is cheap and still retainable for 3 years. There is no risk. We really had no one else to really slot into that position anytime soon. Stearns was with the Astros when they brought him over from the A's as the main piece for Jed Lowrie trade. He then watched him play there for all three seasons. Carter is what he is. He can really hit or make contact very much but when he does... he drills it. He is more like Domingo Santana in that he is a power hitter who can go to all fields, can take a good amount of walks, and struggles to make consistent contacted. Difference is that Santana is a more complete hitter who will hit for more average.
  2. Tanking is pretty useless in baseball. I don't think what-so-ever in DS & his staffs minds they even have that thought in their minds they are tanking for draft picks. If so....they are idiots because this is not the NFL or NBA where you can tank, get a top pick and expect All-Pro performances to turn around your franchise in 1-3 years. Many of these top picks won't even be ready to be called up for 2-4 years then there is very little guarantee. Right now they are bringing in players who fit the profile they are looking for, many of whom were once high upside-top 10 type prospects in former systems, creating as much competition as possible and hoping a few of them pan out. As of today, we have yet to sell off any of our biggest trade assets. Lucroy, Davis, Smith, Jeffress, Segura, Peralta, Gennett, maybe Braun & Garza are all on this team. Hard to discuss us tanking for draft picks (outrageously dumb in baseball) when all he have done is trade Lind (was only retained in order to trade), Sardinas (utility player), Rogers (no defense platoon bat), Cy Sneed (middling prospect), some cash (who cares), got two rule 5 picks, and filled roster with some former high end prospects who either haven't gotten a real opportunity yet or have struggled in their smaller sample sizes. Eric Young Jr brings top end speed and position flexibility. Will he make the team....who know, who cares, this is a competition move. Minor League Deals, waiver claims, and selling of guys who really are not important to the team hardly say we are trying to "tank" Lucroy, Braun, Davis, Segura, Gennett, Smith, Jeffress, Blazek, Garza, Peralta, are all still on this team now 6-8 weeks until everyone begins to report to spring training. If this was the fire sale and major tank job so many people are claiming....that list would be half traded off by now.
  3. Another real good draft site http://www.fueledbysports.com/2016-mlb-mock-draft/ I'd put money on Zack Collins being Jack Zs pick at 5 if he was here.
  4. Best thing possible for out future is to clear as many of those high contracts as possible. Garza for sure, even if you have to eat half of it, it is still worth it. If the goals is to develop & retain our own player, we need to begin to stash away as much money as possible. Our attendance will be down this year so that will hurt our financials. Keep Salaries down until Arcia or any other rising piece of future needs to be paid
  5. Timetables don't really matter & you can't put a date on them. You are simply infusing system with best talent you can find....from rookie ball to young MLB players. If we trade Lucroy and a couple other guys like Will Smith & Segura, post 2016 draft our 30-40th top prospects would arguably be top 10-15 in most other systems...... You load up the talent and wait till they start to produce
  6. Yeah I agree with all of that. It's a big year for a lot of these kids. We have such a deep & talented Arizona-Wisconsin group it will be really interesting to see who emerges. A lot of those kids like Franley Mallen are at the age where they are not rated very high yet but could explode up list if they perform. I think Demi O will face a more Monte & Gatewood adjustment due to his lack of patience and proneness to Ks. Trent Clark I fully expect to hit ground running like Tyrone Taylor did. He has such an advanced approach at the plate, he will be successful. Harrison once he went down and finally got settled down, he went one of those Rickie Weeks old tears for 4-6 weeks. The ones were all Weeks tools would click, he'd be hitting over .400, smoking ball everywhere, using speed on bases and overall just look like the best not just best athlete but player on diamond. Then he suffered the awful accident. Monte has that Weeks ability to be the best player on diamond any given day, at same he has like Weeks shown streaks where he can look clueless & awful.....overall I'd take an excellent, young defensive CF Rickie Weeks any day of week & just hope unlike Rickie, can develop some consistency
  7. The more I think about it, everyone always has full names in Star Wars. Outside of Finn because he didn't have a real name. So why is Rey just Rey? Maybe because she is Lukes daughter and didn't want to give it away... Just something I've been thinking lately
  8. Once again though you don't play players just because they are young, it is there job to win the job. You never actually try to lose or make a lineup that will for sure fail (Outside of 76ers). If Reed & Phillips show they are not ready, what is wrong with a stop gap? Best case scenario, Nieuwenhuis takes off and builds some trade value as Scott Po & Clark did once our young guys prove that they are ready for their opportunity. Realistic best, he holds us over with decent offense and plus defense and becomes a decent bench bat and defensive weapon once Phillips gets the call. Worst case.....He doesn't makes team and claimed by another team...which isn't really a lose.
  9. Think the biggest thing is our our team and system is in position where we can make a few more trades that could make this team very fun to watch as soon as 2017. Lucroy can get at least 2 high level top prospects if Brewers wanted plus 1 or 2 R to A ball guys tossed in. Will Smith being a lefty making 1 million a season who has been very good out of the pen last two season (until overworked) in this RP market could possible get us a Top 5 prospect from a system plus lower level guy or two. Then you add some of those other guys....we have pieces. How long our rebuild is depends soley on Lucroy's trade IMO. That is the benchmark for us. Does DS go top flight high level or low level prospects. (Purely a made up example to make point) Are we getting Gallo, Jackson, Cordell for now or going with Rays to get Adames, Whitley, Honeywell type 20 and under deal for longer rebuild
  10. Hader a top 5 lefty in all of baseball..... Hard to get much more excited for him and Lopez!
  11. Ratterree & Karkenny are surprising a little bit. Karkenny kind of really opens it for Sharky and Denson in A+ and Denson & Perry in A.... Not sure where Denson will end up, last year I thought he was going to go up to A+ to start year and was wrong then he struggled most of this year. Karkenny pretty much play 1B every day which pushed Denson to OF a lot Kole was a higher pick but with them loading up on young arms, older pitchers who weren't flashing much make themselves very expandable.
  12. Honestly I think 90-100 lose season will be awesome for the pure fact the minor forum will get back to where it was in its glory days 2003-2008! I think it is fun to follow young prospects and see guys get opportunities at MLB level. I miss the days when there were 5 new trends rocking a day with heated debates going for pages on prospects in the minor league forum. So just remember everyone, when the crew is struggling move over to the minor league side to focus on our future!
  13. Amazing how we make some no risk waiver claims so now Brewers are going to lose 100 games for a few seasons. They have plenty a pretty good amount of talent in upper levels and could still add to it if they feel like it with Lucroy, Davis, W. Smith, Braun, Peralta, Segura, Gennett trades. We brought in a bunch of guy who were once high end talents who either had a bad year or two or have never really never got the at bats to prove themselves. If you are waiting until 2019-2020, you are really going to close your window with Arcia & Phillips if they come up this season. That gives you only around 3 years before they walk
  14. I think the original trilogy established that people can use the force without little or no training. Luke had just started training with Obi Wan and he was blocking shots with the blast shield down. Leia could feel that Luke got off the Death Star before it exploded. Also, one of Rey's visions when she touches the light saber appears to be of Kylo and the Knights of Ren killing Luke's students. If that vision was a repressed memory, Rey likely would have had some force training before she was left on Jakku. I had more issue with how Finn was apparently the only Stormtrooper in the galaxy that could shoot straight and how he held his own for a while against Kylo. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that Rey is a survivor of the Ren Slaughter and was a young pupil of Luke. Her immediate rapport with Han Solo has me thinking that she is the younger sister of Ben Solo, but she escaped the slaughter (or was spared by a brother who was not yet willing to kill his own sister). Knowing that Ben Solo could read minds and extract information this way, Luke wipes the memory of "Rey" from her own mind, and the minds of those around her including her parents. She's then left on Jakku with a protector (the "old ally" from the beginning of the film - and her prices at the pawn shop for her scavenged parts are suddenly worth less after he dies) in a Luke/Obi-Wan type scenario. She's able to wield the lightsaber and use other Force skills because those dormant skills have been re-activated. You could almost say.. the Force has been Awakened... I lean towards this or that she is Luke's daughter who he sent away after the Ren Slaughter. I don't think Anikan & Luke's light-saber would call out to someone who wasn't related. She is naturally too powerful and gifted at everything the way Anikan & Luke were. Overall I'll take JJ over George any day. I think he just did a really good job as he does with all most everything he does. There are holes for sure. Was hoping Finn was jedi who also was awakening to help explain him developing his own mind all of a sudden
  15. Baseball America's Top 100 HS prospects http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/groome-pint-debate-headlines-class-16/ Nice piece on Rizzo & Cantu, both 3B's who could be there for us in 2nd round http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/ulysses-cantu-joe-rizzo-catching/ Good chat on many of the top 100 near misses http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/high-school-top-100-chat/
  16. i think it is clear that Stearns wants to create as much competition as he possibly can. Bring in a bunch and see who works out the best. I don't think any of these guys are locks to this team at all or mean that us adding them is a sign that everyone will be gone. For Pinto, he is insurance for a Lucroy trade and if Lucroy stays, he is here to push for Maldondo's job as C #2. If he comes out and sucks, well he will be finding himself claimed again by another team.
  17. Scott Podsednik was 27-28 with the Brewers Brady Clark was 30-33 with Brewers Casey McGehee was 26/27 I believe Some guys take awhile to get there opportunity to establish themselves. If Reed is so good anyway, he will beat these guys out for the job. If he can't, why should the Brewers just give him the job without earning it or proving it? DS is creating competition. If Nieuwenhuis comes out and proves that he is the best option you go with him. If not, you lose nothing by bringing him in.
  18. It is funny that all 3 waiver claims are .270 career hitters with OBP 's around .340-.350 and OPS around .800 I think this is a good claim. He had a great 21 game stretch with Twins in 2013. 2014 was rough in MLB then this season he missed most of the season it appears. Either DS doesn't like Martin Maldondo or Lucroy will be on his way out.
  19. Another AAAA guy who you never know what can do without a chance. He has a loud bat that many teams are very interested in. He is in a weird and crappy position that all these teams like like but just don't like him enough. Could be a guy who tanks and plays AAA ball until he retires or be a guy who hits the floor running. He has been a .270 hitter with a .340 OPS and .820 OPS in his minor league career.....very similar to that of Nieuwenhuis actually
  20. Good. The worse the better. That's not how you treat paying customers greeg35. Didn't see too many Brewer Fans crying when we hit on useless waiver claims in CF like Brady Clark & Scotty Po.....I honestly am a Brewer fan through and through and don't care much if we win or not....I am not going anywhere. As long as we have a plan & hope for the future (which we do) the rebuild doesn't effect me. It could be the teacher and coach in me but I actually much more prefer the process and watching younger (or sometimes older) guys get and chance and see what they do with it. That is exciting for me to watch. Winning is great and fun but I love baseball & Brewers and will deal with losing to get better. Same situation as the Bucks. Its not like Stearns is the 76ers who have zero plans and just lose so they can pick only centers to fill their team and trade off anyone who shows any promise. Honestly, who cares and give these guys a chance to show if they have it or not. Kirk was a top 10 prospect for the Mets for 2-3 years but never really got consistent playing time or at bats in his 4 year career. He is a big guy with pop who has shown ability to get on base most of his MiLB career. He plays good defense and was twice rated top defensive OF in Mets system by BA. He does K a lot but overall he was a .830 OPS minor league hitter who hits .275 and got on base at a .350 clip. One thing that makes losing easier to watch is when you have a whole team who plays hard and very good defense. These guys they are bringing in will play hard with the opportunity they are give. Most are at least consider average to good defenders....that is a plus
  21. The first pick in the draft also comes with the biggest pool money. Its a huge advantage. That is true now, how many years as that been in place now through? 3-4 years?
  22. Astros get too much hype over there high picks..... 2008 C Jason Castro (10th) 2009 SS Jiovanni Mier (21st) 2010 OF Delino DeShields Jr (8th) 2010 SP Mike Foltynewicz (18th) 2011 OF George Springer (11th) 2012 SS Carlos Correa (1st) 2013 SP Mark Appel (1st) 2014 SP Brady Aiken (1st) Springer was 11th so you can't say tanking helped get him and Correa is the only other one on list to have any impact what so ever for the Astros.... Stock piling top picks hasn't been the way they have built system. They built there system by stealing guys like Santana and Hader in rookie to low A ball and then having them develop into studs as well as hitting on 6th round picks like Brett Phillips.
  23. Honestly, come draft time & start of rookie ball.....it is going to be really cut throat. Our teams will not have holes on them. They are building a powerful wave between AZ to Wisconsin. System depth is key so I love it. Some of these high ceiling guys will hopefully hit
  24. My guess is Missaki will repeat Wisconsin since he only got 2 months in last season. Then seeing how this management appears to favor young talented arms and as a fan I am hoping Diaz, Supak, and maybe a Nash Walters or another young arm to go with Diplan.... Love Wisconsin offense but pitching right now is pretty sleepy & boring. We will find out about Stearns & Flannigans approach to young talent & how aggressive they will be.
