  1. When Bauers got hot and some joked that may seal his starting spot the rest of the year and into October that may have been prophetic. I am not a Bauers hater, even though I seem to have a lot to say about the guy. He's fine. But, yeah, I'm with you. He gets a lot of playing time for a guy who's basically the definition of replacement level.
  2. Methinks Rhys is going to need more regular ABs over the next few weeks. If I'm Murph, I am going to start Vaughn 3-4 times/wk and Hoskins the rest. Bauers can get an occasional start in the OF and take on the lefty PH/PR role he'll have in the playoffs.
  3. I should probably know better than to wade into this, but we're losing 6-1, so what the heck. 1) I understand keeping half an eye on the Phillies. But is it really worth getting worked up over in any way? The difference between having home field all the way through to the WS and MAYBE having to play on the road slightly more often in the NLCS seems like a pretty big shrug to me. 2) The argument about the division is silly. Not because it's over. Not because it isn't. It's silly because human brains cannot process 1% outcomes with any degree of precision. 1% outcomes happen both all the time (think about, say, COVID hospitalization) and almost never. The odds of being dealt pocket aces are 1 in 221. The Cubs are at about twice that to win. It FEELS more likely than that to some, and others talk about it like it's impossible. It's neither. But until this is truly done and dusted people are going to worry about pocket aces. That's fine as long as they're not folding after every raise. Right now, the fact is we're not playing very well. As for what that means, the answer is PROBABLY nothing. There could be some signal there, but we'll never see it without hindsight, and it might be pointing to something vanishingly small.
  4. The margins are very thin for this team. If we are not hitting with RISP, taking extra bases, and stealing outs defensively, we will not win. We haven't done those things well enough during this mediocre stretch. You'd rather have it now than in two weeks.
  5. No good excuse for that pitch to big brother. Miz didn't execute great, but you gotta be out of the zone there. Contreras maybe needs a better call.
  6. Miz has great stuff. I trust him the least of all our starters, though. He seems like a clear playoff bullpen guy, but do I trust him enough for high leverage? I don't know. If we can't get Hall, Megill, etc. back, I think Miz has a spot for sure. If we get some guys back, though? It might be best to shut the guy down. I can imagine a few scenarios where he's only a mop-up type option, and, at that point, why push his arm?
  7. Not as big of a situation, obviously, but Gorman's actual AB there was probably worse than Jackson's.
  8. This is always the strangest time to be a fan of a good team. The Brewers are very, very good. They absolutely should win the division and earn a bye. It's still a ways until they actually clinch those things, though, so it feels like it's all downside risk. The Phils are smoking hot. They might catch us. I care not at all about that. We've gone up 7.5 on the Dodgers (really 8 with the tiebreaker). The Cubs have won 3 in a row at a time when the Brewers lost 3 of 4. Still, they're like 4-3 in their last 7, so not lighting the world on fire. I'm hoping the Rays and Pirates can each grab at least one from them in the next 5. Good day to start today with Rasmussen on the Hill for Tampa. After the Pirates series, the Cubs have to play 7 against the Mets and Reds, both of whom will be desperate. And Chicago has no off days in that stretch. If they cut this division lead in half, they'll have earned it.
  9. Cubs manage to win a close one this afternoon. They did have to cover a lot of bullpen innings and face two very difficult pitching matchups this weekend. None of which matters if we take care of things this homestand.
  10. Looking for us to get back to playing winning baseball tonight. I hope the off day helped the pitching especially. We need more consistency than showed up in Texas. Of course, bad series happen. Important thing is not to stack them this time of year. Would love us to rip off a 5-1 homestand, but 4-2 is probably good enough. I'll be hoping for some help against our closest competition, but this is all in our hands. New, 15-game season. 0-0. Let's go 10-5.
  11. Yeah, you're getting your magic number down at least two on somebody that series. Tougher schedules for the Dodgers and Phils. Not much to say other than we just need to take care of business at home. There are 15 games left. We will have at least a 5.5 game lead in the division and at least 6.5 on the bye (plus the relevant tiebreaker). Honestly, if the Braves win tonight, this whole series is really no big deal standings-wise. Even if the Cubs get 2 of 3, we're still in a commanding position. Take advantage of the off day, remind ourselves it isn't over, and put together a strong home stand.
  12. Rangers on some kind of heater right now. Been a disappointing series all around. We probably deserved to win one (maybe we still will), but nothing much to do but keep plugging away and try to hit the reset button.
  13. Man, this team is kind of snake-bit this series. That pitch to Osuna just basically hit the plate, and he lines it into center.
  14. Frustrating inning. This feels kind of like a sneaky big game to me. 15 left after today, and it'd be real nice to be in a spot where you only have to go 10-5. Plus, despite the schedule not being THAT tough, I don't like having the Cardinals twice.
  15. Minnesota sources reporting that Kirill Kaprizov turned down an 8-year, $128 million deal from the Wild. Would have been the richest contract in NHL history. Kaprizov has one year left on his current deal then becomes a free agent. I can squint and see the logic here. The cap is rising, contracts have a lot of room to grow, and Kaprizov will probably be one of (if not the) most in-demand FA next offseason. Still. That's a ton of downside risk for a guy with a pretty lengthy injury history. The other explanation I can think of is that maybe he just doesn't like MN or really wants to win a cup and doesn't see it happening there. Either way, the NHL is such a fascinating league. Contracts are so cheap compared to the other leagues, the players incentives don't often seem purely financial, and it seems like there's going to be a lot of cash flowing into the league in the coming years.
  16. Yeah, I thought the offense was much better tonight. Needed to put together one more inning. Pitching had one blow-up inning again, and that's all it takes against the Rangers, I guess. Man, they can get guys out. Every year, there's always one team that seems to get blazing hit to close the season. Texas might be that club. The nice part of having a magic number of 11 with 16 to go is you can afford to drop a road series against a tough opponent. Hopefully, that's all it is. Get a win tomorrow plus the off day, and that'll feel fine, especially if we can roll up a 4-2 home stand (or better) against mediocre competition.
  17. This feels like a tyranny of small differences topic. There is a theoretical difference between being the one seed and the two seed. Just not sure the theory is all that significant. If someone would rather have the one, I get it. I don't care enough to get worked up about it. Finishing with the 3 (or 4), OTOH, would be annoying. To me, it all feels like the NCAAT. Undoubtedly, I'd rather be an 11-seed than a 9. Playing a 6 and 3 (potentially) is better than playing an 8 and a 1.
  18. When you really needed a shutdown inning, that stings. Two games in a row where the pitching was going great for 12 outs or so before the big inning.
  19. I have no rational reason other than I don't want to beat them over 162 and lose to them in October.
