  1. I'll say this. Every year, I'm glad when we no longer play the Cubs (and the Cardinals when they're good, sometimes both). Winning is never as fun as losing sucks, no matter the standings.
  2. Be interesting to see how the Cubs handle the bullpen for these last nine outs. Do they try to sneak Taillon through another one or two? I am guessing it's Kittredge and Rogers for sure. We'll see who else factors in with Palencia and Keller having already pitched today.
  3. Yeah, I think they also know Mis is going 4 innings max tomorrow, and that's if he's more efficient than usual.
  4. The Cubs have been a little more consistent AB-wise, and Taillon started really pounding the strike zone. Such a small difference between Ws and Ls in this sport. I think every out you get from Woo is helpful with Mis on short leash tomorrow too. This stretch is brutal.
  5. Cubs have gotten the breaks we've been getting for a month or so. That's the way it goes in baseball. More disappointed in the poor ABs in the 3rd and 4th.
  6. Woo seemed to really nibble those first couple innings. I know he's struggling with velo early on, but he has been so pitch to contact early on that it's odd on a night like tonight there wasn't more attacking hitters. Probably was trying to just couldn't locate. Between that and Caissie's lucky hit and a bad bounce/poor reaction from Collins, it's frustrating. On the bright side, it's still very early, and the Cubs have a lot of outs to get. Plus, realistically, we need one of the next couple. Getting it tonight just makes Wednesday and Thursday a chance to really extend.
  7. It does seem like we haven't scored in the first inning in a while? We're also near the bottom of the league in first-inning runs. Today is a good day to reverse that trend, though with the wind blowing straight in, scoring at all might be tricky.
  8. One weird (but nice) thing about where the Brewers are: It's kind of all good no matter what? Like, either we win the division again, probably with a bye, or we blow a huge lead and get to feel all resurrected for October's fresh reset, plus avoid having to face the Cubs in a division series as the division champ. If we play them, I'd rather be the challengers. Honestly, losing a playoff series to the Cubs after we win the division is the ONE outcome I don't want from this season. That's so far the worst thing on my list, it's not even funny. I'd sacrifice a lot to not even play the Cubs in October. Hopefully the Cubs just collapse and miss the playoffs altogether, but my heart is so scarred over from playoff baseball there's nothing that can hurt me except that one single outcome.
  9. Those walks really felt like trouble. Definitely pick between those and the Vaughn play as the reason for the two-run difference. I didn't think we played bad baseball today. A couple bad pitches, one defensive miscue and some tough ABs in key spots. We'll win a lot of games with today's effort. Just keep stacking that and all is good.
  10. Hopefully we give this a go here, but throwing Patrick was always going to be trying to steal a win and really turn up the pressure. He struggled to settle down, we made one bad defensive play, and had some tough batted ball luck. On the bright side, the Cubs had to really stretch their pitching yesterday and today. Hopefully, Woody is the horse we all know he is tonight and the bullpen situation pays even more dividends tomorrow and Thurs.
  11. Agreed, though I think it's always on in mid-August. Even if they sweep these two, a seven-game lead with 36 to go is right where the Brewers want to be. Given the Cubs schedule, I've always been of the belief that we're going to have to play really well down the stretch to win this division and secure the bye. Obviously, I'd love to leave Chicago nine up (or better), but I can't shake the feeling that this is going to come down to the final week no matter what.
  12. That pitch has been a strike at times today. Tough one on a 3-2 fastball against a guy who doesn't walk too many
  13. And tomorrow. I'd like to see us really take of Taillon. Just coming off a bunch of rehab starts. I guess he built up to around 80 pitches, so he'll have some length, but just forcing a lot of reliever usage should help a lot the next couple days.
  14. Inclined to agree, but you do want to make the Cubs use their good relievers for the last six outs. Pomeranz looks like he'll get the eighth? CC must love that dude. I would imagine Thielbar gets Turang, though.
  15. Low-key highlight of the game for me: The fans at Wrigley have no idea what's going on. Cheering for foul balls like four times today. And then gasping on Sal's near-miss. Hilarious.
  16. From the other side, the Cubs are on their 8th game in eight days, a lot of them close. Palencia and Keller are reasonably fresh for them, but a lot of the guys have been worked pretty hard IIRC. And they still have 9 outs to get in this one, having already let Keller toss up a bunch of pitches.
  17. The advantage of being the road team (and one with a pretty deep bullpen) is we can throw Anderson or Mears or even Tobias for the 7th/8th and save Megill/Uribe/Koenig for the winning innings if needed. Not a huge loss if you lose with those guys. Ashby hasn't pitched in two days and only threw 10 pitches last time. Hopefully Woody's efficient, but you've got options for game two.
  18. Was pondering the optimal approach here. I like the idea of trying to steal a win with Patrick, especially if it looks like a wind blowing in day. Megill has had two days off, so he will throw tomorrow pretty much no matter what. Miller too, I'd bet. And another day for Ashby helps. We should be in decent shape. I would sign up for a split right now, obviously, but hopefully we can get the first and put the pressure on then in game 2.
  19. You're right. My bad. Maybe not using him back-to-back is a big consideration.
  20. Yeah, and Miller's blowup appearance was the second day of usage in a row. I think they put him in in low-leverage there (we were up 6-0 against Pittsburgh) to see how he a responded to two days in a row. I imagine the results there may be less Murph to think twice about putting in while up a run in the ninth.
  21. Weather looks dicey, but I'm betting the league and the Cubs really want this one in tonight. We'll see if they can push through. Radar seems to clear up around 9-10 (meaning only rain and not thunderstorms), so I suppose they could start then if the Wrigleyville rules allow. Honestly, a PPD is not the worst thing in the world from a Brewers perspective, especially with G1 in the bank, although a later in the week DH does not sound that fun either.
  22. Going to guess they'll try quite hard to get both games in today. Most likely outcome is probably a lightish but consistent rain starting mid-afternoon. With night games Tuesday/Wednesday, I would think they'd be okay playing into the night tonight. Not sure if folks saw Counsell claiming to have never seen a George Webb restaurant (https://www.si.com/mlb/brewers-fans-reporters-catch-craig-counsell-lying-about-teams-burger-promotion), but I think there's a great marketing opportunity to deliver a whole platter of burgers to the home clubhouse on Wednesday.
  23. As someone mentioned last night, today feels as gravy as any gravy game can get. But I am sure the Brewers will be going all out to win with the guys they have available. Would be shocked to see Koenig, Uribe, or Megill today. Throw Mears and Ashby in there too. It's Quintana's show. Grant Anderson will pitch. Maybe Tobias. Miller to close?
