  1. I wanted Hader for Votto and Schebler. Not sure why Jennings after his workload lately...
  2. Arcia: order restored. Bummer too because Chacin just looks like he loves to hit. I mean, he is fun to watch swing at least.
  3. Cain's approach is so much better than everyone else's. Even when he makes outs he looks like a pro. Shaw has really struggled with men on the laat couple games. Need him to come through.
  4. Today turns on the first inning. Chatwood gets a DP after being totally unable to find it. Bryant holds Braun to a single. Yelich's liner is an out. Then bad approaches and weak grounders the rest of the way.
  5. Shaw's swing on that 3-1 pitch is exactly the issue. I love Shaw, but dude. Your run is meaningless. You cannot swing at a 3-1 pitch at your shoes. That is just bad baseball in any situation but especially that one. Let's hope someone other than Thames swings it in Cincy. As I remember it, we didn't exactly tattoo Reds' pitching last go-round.
  6. Santana will be fine. He shouldn't be swinging at that pitch. It has been a strike today and that sucks, but what can you do?
  7. True. And there are worse things than being 16-13 in late April.
  8. Well, let's see if Arcia and Bandy can get on for Santana's first dinger. Then Hader to shut it down. This is the optimism thread, right?
  9. At a certain point, the offensive ineptitude is comical, right?
  10. I think this team has enough good hitters, but they're unevenly distributed. Too many at OF and 1B and none at 2B and SS. Ideally, you could fix that via trade, but Santana and Aguilar are more valuable to us as regular bench options than whatever the market's priced them at. Short term, I think two things will really help. 1) Pina needs to start hitting a little. He can still regress, but the power numbers come up just a touch and suddenly it is a big lift. 2) Villar plays most days and increases his walk rate. He is fine as a singles hitter if that is what he is going to be. How possible is that? I don't know. But right 6, 7, 8 in the order have to produce more than they are now.
  11. I think some of this is the wind and good D from the Cubs. Honestly think we hit the ball harder today, but that is baseball. When you don't hit well situationally, you lose. It has been an ugly start against the Cubs, but we plated well against the Cards in St. Louis and against a good Mets team. I think we will be fine against good teams. It is April, and we are +4. Win tomorrow or Monday, and things are fine.
  12. No Shaw against the lefty. Hoping the bottom of the order collects some hits today. Looks like another pitching day but you never know. Good to see Santana hit yesterday. Hope for more this afternoon. I like Arcia to have a big day. Go Crew!
  13. Can't play SS, big downgrade from Thames or even Choi at 1B, not an appropriate platoon partner for Shaw because he's not good as an RHB, OPS = .413, significantly worse defender at 2B than Sogard... what's not to love? Maybe the Brewers can trade for him again this year. The way I see it, the only "problem" with the middle infield is that the Brewers are just a few years into a tear-it-down rebuild and you can't expect them not to still have a few bad players at the bottom of the roster, like nearly every single other team in baseball - rebuilding or not, big market or not, contending or not. And Sogard's .167 BABIP will improve quite a bit. Maybe I'm behind the curve, but I just don't see Walker's lack of versatility as an issue given Perez's presence on the roster. He's an offense-first 2B with a good enough arm to play in the shift. That's fine with me given Arcia's range at the other MI spot. He gives you the same quality ABs as Sogard with a much more dependable slash line. I mean, it's baseball and random, but Walker seems to me just a clearer bet to put up significantly better WAR this year. I get it. He might not, and he's more expensive. But that is a bet I would have made. Small market teams have to target marginal improvements. I hope I am wrong and Sogard starts to walk and get his doubles. A dependable MI bat would be awesome.
  14. All that is fair. I think last year's OBP is due for regression, but I understand why Sogard got a shot on the roster and a contract. He does usually give a decent AB, and it isn't like he has no business in the majors. Ultimately, this comes down to preference and the question of how long you keep trying him on the assumption that .380 OBP or even .330 is a legit expectation. That is all fine and good, and we will differ on that point. What I really struggle to grasp is why Sogard is getting so many starts at SS in the early going. If Arcia is hurt, fine, but I think he just needs to be your starter when healthy. Seeing both Sogard and Perez in the same lineup is tough for me to grasp when Villar has looked better than both offensively and Arcia is healthy.
  15. I wanted to be 18-12 at the end of April. 16-11 puts that well within reach. This team is one win away from a guaranteed winning April after a 3-0 March. With the schedule featuring 14 games against the Cubs and Cards, that is pretty good. Guerra-Quintana today and Chatwood-Davies tomorrow sounds like two Ws to me. Go Crew!
  16. Sogard does tend to give good ABs and see pitches, but Villar's approach looks much better to me this year. I woild rather have Sogard at SS, of course, but he seems like exactly a replacement level player ro me. I think the issue is partly that we have three gius on the roster who all do the same thing. Since Perez is more versatile and Villar has more upside, I just see Sogard as a redundancy. Nothing against him, and the 2B/SS spilts are interesting, but I don't see why he is getting so many ABs. I think Stearns had a great offseason, but not acquiring a decent 2B option is a bit of.a black mark. Imagine this lineup with Neil Walker written in most days.
  17. Perez is so frustrating. He has to show he can lay off that pitch. It is automatic in an 0-2 or 1-2 count, ans he loves flailing at it. Going to have to get to the Cub BP. At least make them use their good relievers again.
  18. I am not a Perez or Sogard hater. I am more skeptical of Sogard's value. However, to have to watch both of them hit on the same day is not super fun.
  19. I agree. It's been bad. It isn't bad. The fact that it has been bad against everyone but us is frustrating. Also, 7 runs in 5 games is really bad no matter who is pitching. And 5 of those in one game. I get SSS and c., but I want something good to happen on offense against the Cubs.
  20. I hate playing the Cubs. It doesn't help that their bad pitching staff has been Kershaw x 4 against us this year. Get some runs, please.
  21. Those first two "balls" were just bad. Seriously. It happens, but you shouldn't miss perfect strikes twice in a row. My goodness.
