  1. Sort of feels like this team hasn't caught many breaks the last week or so. Hard cobtact on our side for outs, soft contact on theirs for RBI hits. Hope JJ can hold 'em at one. Indians bullpen should have to cover at least three...
  2. I can see it, but with a lead and a fresh pen and 10 outs to get, I think Hader is the right call. Hope he can get 7 of them, though anything above 4 is great.
  3. Doesn't Aguilar have about three more years of control than Thames? Thames' contract ends after next year, right?
  4. has to be a disabled list move, because choi has not met the minimum 10-day stay in the minors yet. In that case, only Davies makes sense, especially since they'd want to give him extra rest anyway, but then Choi just goes back down next week, which doesn't do much for the whole he wants to play more or be traded angle. EDIT: And Thames will likely be back soon too. Maybe they want to showcase Ji-Man for a marginal positional trade?
  5. Call me skeptical on this. I don't see the Brewers simply getting a trade request and then calling him up, and I don't see where Choi fits on this roster even if someone is hurt. If true, I would think it is an AL parks move, with a MI heading back down.
  6. Nice to get out of that. Junior looks to be throwing hard today, even considering his velo has been back up.
  7. I thought this too, but it could also be the injury just set back his annual goood-by date. He seems like a guy that needs to warm up and find his stuff, at least that was the case last year. If that's the case, a DL stint might do more harm than good.
  8. This is going to be a looming issue as we get closer to the next CBA. No one seems to want to sign guys in their 30s to long-term deals. The "big money" window is shrinking, and I would be surprised if we don't get some kind of reform of either arbitration, FA, raising the league mininum substantially, or all three. Yelich's deal may end being what a lot of very good players try to get into. Early, multi-year extensions worth 50 or so million. Happy to pay it to him.
  9. Wonder if Reyes will be on a pitch count? Figured we would see Kratz and Sogard today. Both have looked alright at the plate in very few PAs. I like the lineup overall. The Cardinals are a team against whom I think you need to see a lot of pitches. That is pretty standard these days, of course, but given their BP troubles and especially given this is Reyes' first start, I would like to see him go no more than 5. Hopefully Junior can put up another quality start. I am expecting a tight game, but would love for the offense to keep hitting line drives.
  10. As a starter he would be doing this all the time, no matter what I get it, but I wouldn't have wanted him in there yesterday, and extra rest is a good thing. Maybe he goes 2-plus, even 3 tomorrow. Maybe he goes Rays style and gets the first nine outs. I would absolutely consider it, though I know it won't happen. He is going to pitch anyway, might as well hope he throws up zeroes early...
  11. I want to beat these teams more than I want to beat anyone, but we don't have to win every series against them to win the division. If the score holds, we will be 11-14 against divisional opponents. Not good. But not horrible. Just playing aroind .500 is fine. We aren't going to sweep the Reds every time, and the Cubs aren't going to continue to play .800 ball against us. This is going to be a tight division all summer. We are right where you want to be at the end of May. There are 4 months of baseball left. Have winning months. That is all that needs to happen.
  12. Not looking good. Even with a loss tomorrow, that is a 7-3 homestand to cap an 18-9 May. Still, I think this team rallies for a few tonight and wins a close one tomorrow.
  13. More and more I think the Brewers overall philosophy is that they have 13 guys who can play and hit in the big leagues. Except at positions where there is a clearly superior option (CF, Yelich, 3B), this means we're getting a constant shuffle. This looks weird to me a lot, but I am getting to the point where I see the logic. If the org believes Perez is about as good as Villar, you split starts and hope both players stay fresh longer, which leads to max production long-term. Depth is the innovative thing this roster is doing. It really seems to be our Moneyball. Maybe it isn't the best approach, but I am starting to enjoy the attempt...
  14. I will say again that I don't understand how so many are so down on Villar still. His year has been fine. He is a guy who can carry a high BABIP, and it doean't really matter if he doesn't slug. If he plays good defense and gets on base in the bottom part of the order, that is fantastic. He has done about everything asked of him for the last month at least.
  15. Last night Sogard saw 11 pitches in 2 ABs, singled, and scored the winning run. I don't think he's good or a long-term answer. I get the frustration. But we shouldn't pretend he is useless or without skill. In the lefty PH, 25th man role, he is fine for NOW. Until Arcia shows he can hit more consistently.
  16. TH twitter is talkong like Kratz is the MLB choice, but that is certainly not foolproof....
  17. I could live with sending Arcia down to work on things if we had a viable alternative like Dubon up to try instead. Not really convinced that Saladino is a viable alternative. Sogard obviously isn't. I guess it's fine if he (Saladino) puts up his 2016 numbers, but I remain unconvinced like others that Sogard will be "rarely used" and any AB he gets is a wasted one. I find this annoying too, and Sogard is about as "meh" as a player gets, but I think "any AB is a wasted one" is hyperbolic. Sogard can at least walk. He sees pitches. He has a decent approach. As long as he is getting one start a week MAX, this is fine, especially if Villar and Saladino keep hitting. It is a move teams just jave to make every so often. The Cubs did it with Schwarber last year. Let Orlando get it figured, and hopefully it is a few weeks and he is back.
  18. All great points. Fangraphs seems to do a good job of recognizing error bars in the posts, chats, and affiliated podcasts they produce, so it is simplistic to take that "projections" page as a "predictions" page. Additionally, I would rather have the FG model than Fivethirtyeight's, which has shown the Brewers' playoff odds DOUBLE over the last week and a half. As nice as that is to see, it feels like pretty serious recency bias to me. This conversation gets to the heart of something I think is really important about analytics and projections. IMO, they still do a much better job of describing a change than predicting future performance. They are getting better at the latter, but the "error bars" SoCal referred to, the confidence intervals, they still tend to be pretty wide. Identifying a 95 percent range is much easier than noting where something will fall within that range.
  19. I would guess Yelich sits too. Also thinking Saldino starts at 2nd for Villar. Hope so anyway since Salad Man is hot and Villar is much better as a lefty.
  20. Perhaps it's because he is coming in and immediately throwing different stuff than what hitters are used to from the team's other pitchers? I have been skeptical of Suter as a starter (while always believing he can be a useful MLB pitcher), but he has proven me wrong consistently. How about I remain skeptical and hope he keeps making me look like a fool?
  21. Aguilar looked so out of it and then just delivers. That guy can hit.
