Yeah, I think you're right. Mostly just spitballing. He's done his job well for the most part, especially over the last month or so. -
How do we feel about Rea on the postseason roster? Maybe not in the WC round, but, should they make it to the division series, he's not a bad option if you need to cover 2-3 innings. Maybe if you're trailing 3-0 after 3 and need somebody to keep it there through or 6?

At a certain point, I have to marvel at how good this team is despite being so bad at half the game.

I think the Brewers are going to put up runs tonight. Going to take 5 or 6 to win, I'd say. Feels like an offense kind of night.

CC is the best manager in baseball. Our front office is awesome. But I have no idea why we are playing two players short on the bench. I like Brian Anderson, but he is a mascot at this point. It's weird. Aaaand it looks like the Brewers will have to score runs to win. That's harder than it sounds.

That's cool. I just think it's rare rather than "special." And I think it's rare because wins are about the least important indicator of a pitcher's ability. I am also not big on round-number bias. The difference between 199 wins and 200 is psychological.

Either way, Helsley likely won't be available tomorrow. Pitched yesterday. Four outs today. Thin bullpen, that helps. Far as this series goes, just get 2 wins and move on.

I hate the Cardinals. But the fact is, right now, the Brewers are a better organization. And in better long-term position. I refuse to get worked up about Wainwright achieving a "milestone" that is meaningless in the current context of baseball. It actually says a lot about the Cardinals (or maybe just what a total joke their season has been) that anyone cares about a guy getting 200 career wins. Of course, it sure would be nice if we could look at all respectable offensively.

The way this team is built, long winning streaks are hard. They really only win one kind of game: a close one (it's a long season, always exceptions, etc., but winning 3-1 is a big part of the philosophy). That means you're often relying on guys like Viera to pitch two very high leverage innings to win your fourth game in a row. And Viera was very good! But lack of situational hitting and some bad luck turn it into an L. It happens. The Crew has put itself in an incredible position with two weeks left. Get 4 wins this week, and you're looking at a great chance you can rest people the next.

I agree, though I also think that's fine. He's at 1.6 bWAR, and, while that's not where anyone wants him long-term, it's been enough for the Crew this year. I'm more concerned about Weimer, as I know others are. Frelick looks the guy most likely to succeed from a prospect standpoint, but things change quickly in this game.

Agree completely. I think it's reasonably likely the division is still up-for-grabs going into that last series, but both teams have playoff berths sewn up. In that scenario, I would be more concerned with setting my rotation than winning homefield advantage. For me, the bottom line is the season is going to come down to a three-game series. I mean, it might be a three-game series against the Marlins (half-blue), but it will be a three-game series where the Brewers need to win 2 of 3. Depending on the scenario, I'd almost rather be on the road, especially if we end up playing the Cubs. And I'd rather play Chicago/Cincy/Philly than Arizona in round one. I'm terrified of the D-Backs when they throw out their good pitchers. My optimistic take is this: One of the Cubs/Dbacks are going to take on losses over the next 4 days. If the Brewers can play well in NY, they'll be very close to clinching a playoff spot. At that point, you really just have to take care of business against the Marlins. And making the playoffs has really been my goal all season long. Winning the division would be a nice bonus and a bit of a comfort should we drop that first-round series, but being there matters more than anything, especially with the pitching (starters and bullpen) we can throw out in a short series.

I think the Cubs are better than the Reds. Fangraphs has them almost 5 times more likely to win the division than the Reds, so I'm with the general consensus on this one. The Cubs big weakness to me seems to be depth and bullpen. I don't know what a rib cartilage fracture is, but it doesn't sound like something Stroman is going to recover from very quickly, especially factoring in a need to ramp up. That injury along might give the Brewers the edge. I'd put Burnes-Woodruff-Peralta-Miley-Houser up against Steele-Hendricks-Taillon-Smyly-? and feel like the Crew should win 3 out of those 5. If the Brewers can stick around a 2-3 game lead heading into September, I'll feel pretty good. I think we have the best overall team in the division (despite glaring offensive weaknesses). My one concern about the Reds is that they're going to have some soft landing spots the last couple of weeks of September. Hoping the brutal stretch they're in piles up a bunch of Ls.

Don't look now, but the Cubs are playing really good baseball. Still 6 out in the division, but only 4.5 out of that last WC spot. They have the best run differential in the division. Ultimately, I don't that bullpen is good enough to lock down a playoff spot. But it certainly doesn't look like full-on "sell" mode on the north side. Fangraphs has the Brewers at 77% to make the playoffs and about 70% to win the division. Should be favorites, but the Cubs do have the weakest remaining schedule.

Turang has also put together some really good ABs lately. Scorched an out in the 8th last night. Had a bad K early. He's not an MLB hitters yet. But there's progress. When the rest of his game is as good as it is, that's enough.

Revisiting the Hader Trade

To me, this was a trade a team like the Brewers just has to make to be long-term competitive. Hader was on of the most valuable pitchers in the game, and he wasn't going to be around much longer. They took a shot to replace his contributions I. The short-term with Rogers. That failed. Every other part of the trade has worked out very well, though, and that longer term outlook was always the point. -
Alright, the Reds are good. They will go through a bad stretch eventually (starting pitching is thin, and that ballpark is really going to test it), but I think this is going to be a tight race all the way to the end. I have a hard time seeing the Brewers creating a ton of separation. That said, how good are the Giants? How good are the Marlins? I thought the NL Central was bad, but I will not be at all surprised if the division has two playoff teams.

This is definitely the most talented group of players I've seen (following since 1994). Their skill in midfield and out wide is impressive. Back line and striker are pretty thin. And the back is very important at the international level. Not getting out of the group would be VERY disappointing. But, yes, 2026 is the more realistic deep run target.

Despite Qatar and the sheer absurdity and corruption (not to mention violence), I am looking forward to the World Cup. Will be interesting to see US engagement levels when the event is competing with every major domestic sport (including CBB and CFB), baseball excepted. A few quick thoughts: Most disappointing team: England. Could be sneaky tough for them to get out of a group much more difficult than the gut feelings would suggest. HM: Spain (because I think they have the toughest group) and France (because they are so talented, but also potentially very toxic). Most surprising team: But for some health concerns about Mane and Davies, I'd go with Sengal or Canada. I'll say Denmark. Very cohesive team. Uruguay and Japan are up there too. How far will the US go? Round of 16. I think they'd be underdogs against any Group A team in that game. I could see deeper if Mousah and Reyna have the breakout they're capable of. Champion: Brazil. So deep. Feels like their turn. I'll be rooting for Argentina, though.

I've honestly always wondered why leagues like the MLS and NWSL don't try to put pro teams in smaller cities. I can't imagine a pro women's or men's soccer team doing poorly, even in a place that doesn't scream soccer culture. Tons of small, pro-sports-less cities (Omaha, Des Moines, Louisville, etc.) seem like great opportunities for the newer domestic leagues. I suppose the NWSL tried this once with that team from Western New York (and they did pretty well in attendance drawing from an even smaller town before moving to NC). I just think, if I were I pioneering millionaire with enough money to buy a pro sports franchise, I might move an NWSL team to the Quad Cities or something on the idea that, in a really fractured market, lower levels of intense, local support are what's going to carry a team.

Two matches in to the EPL and my question is whether anyone can challenge City. I have a good feeling about Arsenal for some reason. Leeds has been a fun story. Looking forward to watching the US in the World Cup with what will have to be its most talented roster ever.

I love this matchup for the finals. Two hot goaltenders. Canadian drought vs. potential repeat. Fun stuff. I'd love for the Canadian drought to end, but I'd really prefer it be a Western team...still, the Habs have been fun all playoffs.
