  1. Is there any reason why the two deals with Baltimore were separated in the first place? I could see this slot money not being used and the trades end up being Magnifico for Drake (no PTBN or cash exchanged).
  2. The specific shortcoming with the Dodgers offense is hitting LH pitching. With Bellinger being a lefty himself, I doubt he improves that issue. Skaikin's article seems like one planted on behalf of the Dodgers who want to drive down the perceived need for Braun. On the other hand, as has been mentioned before, the articles on the continued trade talk could have been planted/started by the Brewers or Braun's people. It almost as bad as politics.
  3. From LAD: Walker Buehler, Mitchell White, & Jacob Rhame From SF: Tyler Beede, Matt Krook, Reyes Moronta 1 Top 100 Starting Pitcher (but not in top 50), 1 SP drafted last year & 1 Hard Throwing RP prospect. Realistic? For comparisons sake that would be like the Brewers trading: L.Ortiz, Corbin Burnes and Josh Pennington (Brewers don't have a true Bullpen prospect in the 20-30 range, but Pennington may end up there anyway). If the Brewers were at the stage of competing and had a need, I wouldn't think twice about dealing those three for guy like Braun even with the contract. Makes me think we maybe could get more.
  4. Realistic?
  5. Just seeing the Link Report logo atop the page put a big smile on my face this morning [smile] I think someone is really missing out on an opportunity to sell T-Shirts with the Link Report Logo. Would be fun to see how many of us Linkers you would see at Miller Park with the T-Shirt.
  6. Boilerplate article based on the beginning of the contract. Yes it is a terrible contract that everyone would love to go back in time and not do. But to focus on the past at this point is stupid. I can think of a whole lot of contracts out there with a ton of money yet to be paid that I would rather not have. The fact that Garza could (COULD, not likely, COULD) perform decently this year makes the 5th year a possible asset. A first half like Garza's second half last year and he is very movable.
  7. Is it possible that the 2017 Brewers could have a 200HR/200SB season? Would need good health and multiple guys hitting their ceiling but the possibility is there. Last year they came surprisingly close: 194HR's & 181SB. No other year in franchise history did they even sniff 200/200. I have looked at a handful of other teams historical information and haven't found a team yet that accomplished a 200/200 season but I cant say that it hasn't been done before. Clearly it would be a unique season though.
  8. Seems like the choice is to take a lowball offer from the Dodgers or ride it out and hope a better market develops for Braun during the season or next winter. (yes I know about his 10&5 rights) The shorter his contract gets while he still produces (hopefully) the better his market will be. If Braun only had 2 years left on his contract he would be gone by now and with a nice return too. 2 years seems to be the sweet spot. More than 2 yrs for a mid 30's guy, the return diminishes, yet if there is only 1 year vs. 2 the return would also seem to diminish. Keeping Braun for 2017 doesn't bother me. Past that and his presence will likely start to impede playing younger, cheaper and hopefully productive prospects.
  9. Well the basis for a deal similar to August's are still relevant. As JosephC illustrated Braun has surplus value of about $9 million. Taking back Puig and McCarthy balances out the salary for the Dodgers and also McCarthy's negative surplus value wipes out Puig's positive surplus value. The rumored deal involved 2 prospects that could not be agreed to. Given the above it was likely 2 prospects in the 12-30 range (which seems to be Stearns MO anyway i.e. the inefficiency of the market in his eyes is the non-top 10 prospects who are ascending). So either: 1) The Dodgers feel better about Puig after his return to the bigs and now don't feel as compelled to make the move or 2) The Dodgers really don't want to give up the 2 prospects Stearns wants or 3) The Dodgers feel adding Dozier helps them as much or more than Braun (but at a steeper prospect cost) or 4) The Dodgers are slow playing Stearns in hopes that he blinks (maybe they were the source for Cafardo's article)
  10. JosephC Substitute Y.Alvarez instead of Verdugo and I would take that deal.
  11. I would add one more possible plan: 4) Villar is traded (for something really good) and Scooter is the 2B until Dubon or Diaz are ready I would say this is the second most likely scenario behind #3
  12. Rangers looking for DH/1B/OF bat and looking to move Jeffress. What about a Braun for JJ, Yohander Mendez and a third piece. Maybe Anderson Tejada (#27 Ranger prosp. who looks like an Isan Diaz type and someone who could pop this coming year).
  13. RB for Cain, Beede, Shaw and Matt Krook and then since you've added Cain to the SP mix I would definitely flip Guerra to say the Astros for Franklin Perez (a 50 Grade prospect who could explode this year).
  14. 1) depending on the contract seems like a reasonable bounce back candidate that may be able to be flipped at the trade deadline 2) to me his signing (if true) would indicate a trade involving a SP (or two). Yes you need 8 or 9 viable candidates in ST but we have plenty. 1) Davies 2) Nelson 3) Peralta (maybe move to bullpen) 4) Guerra 5) Anderson 6) Garza 7) Jungmann 8) Sutter - bullpen? 9) Milone - if signed 10) Cravy - bullpen? 11) prospects who could break camp or be brought up in 2017: Lopez, Wilkerson, Hader, Ortiz, Wang, Woodruff Plus we could end up taking a McCarthy or Kazmir in a Braun trade. Makes me think Stearns is going to trade a Guerra and or Garza either separately or with Braun.
  15. Maybe I am misreading Garza's contract details but if not Doug Melvin could be a genius for the structure. The 5th year of the deal (2018) vests at $13 mill if certain thresholds are met. Unless the Brewers go to a 4 man rotation and Garza makes 39 starts, the 2018 will not vest. If the 5th year does not vest at $13 million then the team holds an option for 2018 at $5 million. Now lets assume Garza bounces back to being a 3.80 - 4.00 ERA pitcher (remove his terrible July numbers and his ERA in 2016 was 3.58) and makes most or all of his starts during the first 1/2 of '17. There should be plenty of teams willing to part with good prospects to add a vet SP for the stretch run of 2017 and knowing that they could retain him for 2018 at a pittance of $5. Granted there are some big "ifs" in Garza being a) healthy and b) effective but these are not pie in the sky hopes. Even if Garza has a similar 2017 as 2016 where he only makes 1/2 his starts and the results are uneven. I still see the low clearance price of $5 million for 2018 being coveted by enough teams to be able to trade him.
  16. The Brewers may be able to pull off a trade for Carter. While teams could just wait and sign him in FA, they may find it a better alternative to trade for him and offer arbitration. I could see the Brewers getting a bullpen prospect for Carter.
  17. Don't forget Jungmann and Cravy. That said if a team is willing to part with a prospect in the 40-80 range for Guerra, I think you have to take that deal. Yes he could turn into one of those guys who kinda of comes out of nowhere and becomes really good in his 30's (RA Dickey for instance), but odds are much higher that he regresses and/or gets hurt. Better to take some winnings off the table, lest you walk away at the end of the night empty handed.
  18. Astros traded for McCann and singed Reddick today. Astros wont be trading for Braun. Now an interesting destination would be the Yankees who are looking for a DH but don't want to pay as much as it would take to get the top bats in FA. Yankees prospects, already deeper than the Brewers just got deeper with the McCann trade. Braun + $ for Rutherford & Abreu (who they just got from Houston).
  19. Agree w/ Madtownhawk. That return stinks for Braun. At minimum one of Devers or Kopech has to be included. I believe those two are the most getable of their top 5 prospects.
  20. Regarding Braun approving a trade to Boston. While he clearly wants to play in southern CA, if one of those teams does not step up, Boston might be the best alternative for him. First, he is more valuable and will enjoy his last few years more if he is in the AL and primarily a DH. Second, given the current talent level within the Boston organization, he has to know that there would be a great chance to play in a couple post-seasons. Third, Braun has two young kids now and you would think that he wants stability. i.e. he wants to know where he will be for the rest of his career. If he were traded to SD or LAD does he really think they wont turn around and trade him 2 years from now when he needs to be a DH? Lastly, Boston is a great American city with a lot to offer. It's not like we are asking him to go to Cleveland
  21. The Red Sox have a big hole to fill with Ortiz's retirement. MLB Traderumors listed the top free agents, their guess at their destination and contract. They have Edwin Encarnacion going to the Red Sox for 4yrs 92million. EE is good but would you rather have him over Braun? Braun is also 2 yrs. younger and even if the Red Sox had to pick up the 5th year option without the Brewers kicking in any money it would be 5 yrs. 87 million. Brewers and Red Sox could create a blockbuster trade with Braun, Thornburg and some $$ to make Braun even more valuable for Devers, Koepech and Cosart.
  22. FVBrewerfan is correct in that McCarthy's time with the Packers has run its course. It happens. It is similar to Reid in Philadelphia and Shottenheimer in KC and soon Harbaugh in Baltimore. If you are not careful, a head coach, even though successful and respected, can end up being white noise in the locker room. Year after year of saying the same thing and running the same plays and never overachieving expectations breeds complacency and mediocrity. One of the big reasons why I think Belichick is so successful is his staff. He views his job as coaching the staff who in turn coach the players. He is unafraid of turnover as he looses coordinators and coaches all the time to other teams. But this turnover brings a freshness to the program. McCarthy on the other hand has gone out of his way to not allow his staff to interview for some jobs thus leaving him possibly a less motivated but definitely less fresh staff. Every year in the NFL is brand new with a different wrinkle or emphasis. McCarthy and his staff (like many on this board) are stuck in the past and cant figure out why it isn't working anymore.
  23. McCarthy playoff record without 2010: 4-7 Rodgers playoff record without 2010: 3-6 No season besides 2010 with 2 playoff victories 2010 was an exception to the rule T-Plush and it is now 6 freaking years ago. In the NFL if you are not improving your regressing. Packers have not been an improving team in some time. Most fan bases would be elated with 10-6 seasons and WC playoff games. Me I will be awfully pissed if the Packers end up with 2 Super Bowls victories out of about 30 years of HOF QB play ('92-??). Proceed yourself
  24. McCarthy was once thought of as a dynamic offensive mind and play caller. This is no longer the case. The NFL has evolved and adapted and it doesn't feel like McCarthy has. The combination of Thompson and McCarthy would ensure 10-6 teams for as long as the eye sees. I just don't see the two of them ever overseeing anything close to a championship team again. The franchise needs a shake-up. Thompson needs to be kicked up to some advisory role that allows him to do what he does and likes best (scout college players). Elliott Wolf needs to be named GM and in turn he needs to let McCarthy go (much like Andy Reid he will go on to have success with some other team who hasn't tuned him out). Then Wolf needs to hire Josh McDaniels who will be able to do for Rodgers in his final years what he has done for Brady.
