  1. Why exactly do the Cubs fans think Darvish will give them a non-hometown discount? He is not signing for less than 100 and it be closer to $130 over 5 years. That is what my offer would be to him and structure it as 30-28-26-24-22 so the present value is better for Darvish/Boras and he would be less of a drag by the 5th year.
  2. So And That are you saying you would faint at your desk with excitement if we trade for Trevor Bauer
  3. So if the idea of possibly sending both Santana and Phillips in an Archer trade has been contemplated for a while, is that were the rumor about interest in Ellsbury came from? If both Santana and Phillips are gone we are suddenly a little short in the OF given Braun's injury history (IMHO). Ellsbury with NY paying a significant portion of his salary (and throwing in a prospect) makes some sense (although we still wouldn't have a true RF). Clearly we wouldn't want to give NY any payroll flexibility until Darvish signs though as they would become a more serious bidder for him. So as with everything in MLB right now it all comes back to Darvish making a decision first.
  4. Mark A. will never (and should never) use his personal fortune to fund splurges the team makes. The Teams finances need to stand on their own for the health of the organization. Also people need to remember that Mark A. does not own 100% of the team. While he is the controlling owner talk about busting the budget and ponying up more money is not just a matter of Mark cutting a check. Please stop with the comments along the lines of "well he can afford it..."
  5. I think the point is the Brewers could be limiting their future flexibility with the additions. If a Darvish/Arrieta signing occur little improvements can be made to the roster in future years unless they come from our own prospects or they coincide with moving other players (Thames/Chacin in '19, possibly Knebel or Shaw in '20)
  6. I think 50% of Revenue would be the top of the scale for Brewers on a sustained basis. Individual years could be higher but not consistently and not much more than that. So I would peg the Brewers top of the scale at $125 but more comfortably in the 115-120 range. That said all teams are getting an extra $50 this year and maybe Mark A. would let Stearns use an extra 10-15 a year for the next 3-4 years with the hope that when that runs out the franchise revenue will have grown enough to not have to pull back from that level. So maybe we can go to 130's this year and the next few. Put another way we have room for Darvish and Archer/Salazar. Although 2019-2021 will start to get tight and may necessitate trading away guys like Thames and Chacin (and maybe Knebel when he gets really expensive) and hoping guys like Erceg and Huira truly emerge to cheaply replace Shaw and Villar.
  7. If we ship off 4 prospects in an Archer trade and if we sign one of the FA SP, what type of prospect haul could we get for Santana? Use him to replenish the system. Considering Cleveland makes so much sense for Santana and not focusing on Mejia or McKenzie as returns could we get a Nolan Jones or Will Benson plus a pitcher like Civale and a 3rd guy/lottery ticket?
  8. Would Burnes, Woodruff, Ray & Gatewood for Archer work? I would only include both Burnes & Woodruff if I already had acquired another pitcher, either FA signing or in Santana trade.
  9. Not to get too off track but Rosenthal's mention of Yankees looking to shed salary reminded me of something else I had read about their possible interest in Kipnis earlier this offseason. The article mentioned that Kipnis' contract AAV was something like $8 which is what would count towards the luxury tax even though what was actually owed was about $30 over the next 2 years. This got me wondering about Ellsbury. Clearly the Brewers don't need him so I am not advocating that. What I wonder though is if the Yankees did find a taker by picking up say $10 a year of his remaining contract do they have to count that towards the luxury tax calculation or do they get to deduct the whole $21+/yr AAV of his contract? The fact that the luxury tax uses the AAV of the contracts seems like a silly way to do track this.
  10. Trade 1) Santana + Nottingham + Villar for Salazar + Mejia + Kipnis Brewers need to take on risk of Kipnis to balance the trade for Cleveland Trade 2) Mejia + Woodruff + Ray + Gatewood for Chris Archer It will take at least 2 top 100's including a top 25 or so to get Archer. Then I would leave Yelich in LF fulltime, Cain in CF fulltime and have Braun & Phillips in a loose platoon in RF and Braun and Thames in a loose platoon at 1B
  11. Interesting to see on Yelich spray chart that he has more power to the opposite field and he rarely pulls with power (no HR's from mid-RF to the foul pole).
  12. What's next: Likely move: Santana (with or without prospects) for Salazar/Archer/Fulmer/Duffy/Strohman Possible moves: Broxton (again with or without others) to SF in a deal for Panik or Will Smith (build a dominate Bulpen) Re-sign N.Walker (not if we acquire Panik) Take on Ellsbury and a portion of his salary & get a good prospect like Abreu for doing so - someone mentioned that Stearns seems to be adopting the Astros philosophy of reducing K's, Ellsbury fits that profile and as we know Stearns likes athletic CF type OF's Maybe move: Sign a one of the FA SP Dream move(as in not going to happen but we can at least dream): Braun to Arizona for Greinike AZ gets RH power bat to replace JD Martinez while shedding significant salary Brewers get a #1 SP at reasonable net $$ cost and open up LF for Yelich which is where he should be playing Braun goes to a team/city that he must somewhat like given it was one of the teams not on his no-trade list when that was in place
  13. Contract issues. The only Brewer with a contract that could cause a problem is Braun and he doesn't seem to be going anywhere anyway so it means a player coming back has contract issues. That could be no-trade clause or vesting/team/player options or working out a salary sharing arrangement. So who from the AL would fit that: Ellsbury - but acquiring him seems more like move B or C not move A Salazar/Fulmer/Strohman - they are all controlled by Arb years not contract years Duffy - straight forward contract but maybe Brewers are looking for Royals to pick up some $$ Archer - he has option years but no authority to demand they be picked up to accept a trade Machado - can't imagine the Brewers both trade for and get him to sign a contract but I suppose that would fit as a "contract issue" Kipnis - maybe. Brewers may be asking for $$, not sure if he has a no-trade where he can demand the option yr be picked up Robinson Cano - this would definitely be out of left field but I can see Seattle trying to get out of the contract and the Brewers needing big $$ from Seattle to do so Verlander - Would Astros trade him so they can continue pursuit of Darvish? Really grasping at straws to find contract issues for players the Brewers would be interested in
  14. Maybe someone noted this already but adding Chacin and Gallardo (neither are finalized though) means 41 players on the roster. Who is getting cut or is there a trade happening?
  15. Santana, Ray, Ortiz, Isan Diaz, and Supak for Archer and Jose Alvardo (hard throwing LH-RP) For those that say why would TB want Santana. Well he is better (offensively) than the OF's currently on the roster. He is ascending. He is cheap. And he can be flipped at any time in the next couple years for more prospects by TB. Out of the 80 OF's who had at least 400 PA last year, Santana's .875 OPS ranked 14th. Only 2 of the 13 players above him had more SB's than him.
  16. Expanded deal with Santana and Villar (or Sogard) going to OAK for Manaea and Lowrie? Solidifies 2B and gives us a young controllable LH SP who is a breakout candidate.
  17. No doubt the Brewers would have offered an extension to Nelson had he not been injured. Jumping in and getting it done with Anderson who saw what can happen close up was a shrewd move. If he's good but the Brewers don't contend over the next couple years, he's prime trade bait. If they do contend, he's still affordable. Davies could be next? If I recall Davies has Boras as his agent. I doubt that Davies signs a deal like this and instead goes year to year until FA.
  18. I wonder how much Jimmy Nelson's injury affected Chase's thinking here. I think he clearly left some (lots?) of money on the table with this deal vs. going year to year, but better to have financial security in place than potentially going down with a career altering injury.
  19. With Chase signing a team friendly, relatively low cost deal, let the conversations of his trade value and the numerous top 100 prospects we could get begin in 3...2....1
  20. As the person who started this thread last November there were certain times during the year where I felt I was right in thinking a 2018 Garza at $5 would bring back a nice piece or two. Now I don't even want to bother picking up the option. Roll that money into bringing back Swarzak or Walker.
  21. So 4 pitchers, 2 of which could be I'll go Bickford, T.Williams, B.Derby & J.Yamamota btw, couple these with the position players and I don't think the Brewers have ever sent such a true prospect laden group to the AZFL.
  22. Uhen was there last year -- Like I said, a prospect who is easy to forget.. LOL Can a player go to the AFL multiple years? Didn't Dubon also go last year for the Red Sox?
  23. Josh Uhen is another sneaky good candidate for the AFL. This is the kind of under the radar pitcher that the Brewers typically send. Easy to forget he was a 5th round pick.
  24. I think M.Dubon is a good candidate to go as a super utility guy. Gatewood is a good choice as the below AA guy although I can see sending C.Ray too. I feel like they send a C many years so I will say D.Houle Maybe they have been limiting Ortiz's innings because they plan on sending him to the AZ Fall league for another 20 IP. I think Taylor Williams does make sense as long as it is 1 inning every 3 days. Bubba Derby would complete my list. (they send 6 right?)
  25. I see Dubon as the eventual replacement for Hernan Perez. A super utility guy. Better Ave/OBP than Perez but significantly less power. Agree with those suggesting resigning Walker but only to a two year or less deal.
