  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Barnhart is an excellent defender. While I know Realmuto is also a good defender, I think he would be a small step backward from Barnhart. Also with the additions of Kemp/Puig, I don't think it's as important for them to add a RH bat to protect their LH heavy lineup. If anything, those 2 outfielders make them very balanced. I'm not trying to argue that Realmuto wouldn't be an upgrade. Barnhart is a lot better than Pina/Kratz, it isn't as significant of an upgrade compared to the upgrade we made. Primary point being that this move is a bit puzzling. I would think if anything, the Reds would use their chips to bring in one more arm with some team control. Basically meaning they should be looking hard at Kluber.
  2. I know it's super early and your post is just floating an idea, I too had tried to find a way to move Hiura higher in the order and struggled. This could work, but I think in this scenario you'd be swapping Braun and Grandal. Grandal over the last 2 seasons has been over 100 OPS better as a LH hitter than RH hitter. The switch hitting is still a benefit, but he should be placed in lineups as if he were a LH hitter. Putting Shaw and Grandal together basically guarantees a LH reliever enters the game after Braun and gives those 2 guys a disadvantage. I'll add that I really hope our biggest problem in August is trying to determine which 800+ OPS hitter to insult by having them bat 7th in the lineup.
  3. That's what I thought last year, but I didn't foresee them using so much shuttle service. That's probably going to be the plan again, given how many guys with options they have on the 40 man. In fact, they'll probably have 11 pitchers more often than they have 13. HA! I'd bet the maximum amount of money possible that you're wrong on the 11 vs 13 argument.
  4. Update on Jimmy Nelson's health, from the horse's mouth...
  5. Positional flexibility is key, whoever we bring in is likely only keeping the seat warm for a couple months.
  6. Early on in the offseason, I had read that something like 20 teams had touched base with him. I'm kinda expecting him to get Zobrist money, if not more.
  7. He's played some 1b. I think he'll be ok there. No Goldschmidt or Rizzo, but he'll be fine.
  8. Seems we might be closing in on someone...
  9. Not to derail the topic too much, but the Cubs are looking at $210M payroll if they do nothing at this point. And they are a team with at least a couple minor needs. Heck there is still talk of them getting Harper. Also the link below for a reminder of contracts signed this offseason. With some of those contracts, it's seriously hard to argue that teams aren't spending. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/
  10. There have been numerous reports he turned down 4/55-60 from the Mets. I don't know why people keep saying the system is broken. I imagine in time we'll find out what happened there. There are myriad reasons that he may have preferred this deal. Right. Let's say Grandal has a good year and bangs 30+ HR with a solid OPS and ends the season healthy. None of those things are super unlikely on their own. He'll enter the 2019 offseason with no QO attached and in a much better position to get a big contract. All he'd have to do to beat the original 4/55 offer is get 3/36 or better. He of course could do much better than that. He's betting heavy on himself, it's definitely much easier to do that after you've made around $40 million for your career...including his $18 million this year.
  11. The natural inclination is to think that Kratz is the odd man out, but we've seen how much they like him. Pina has some potential trade value. If they really believe in Nottingham, I could see Pina getting dealt before the season, Kratz staying as backup and Nottingham as insurance in AAA. Grandal is going to get the lion's share of starts no matter who is the backup. Frankly, this is why I wonder if they'll turn around and trade Pina. Backup catchers rarely PH anyways. I feel like Pina is wasted in the backup role, would be better to trade him now. Especially considering he will be 32 this year and is entering arbitration. If we were ever going to get value for him in a trade, now would be the time.
  12. I have the Brewers payroll around $104M if you assume they trade Anderson and Thames and you don't count any incentives, buyouts and deferred payments from prior years (Garza). So that seems to me there is room for more pitcher or 2B salary. I would say they potentially wait and see more specifically where to spend the rest of their money at the trading deadline, but with Grandal on a one year deal, I assume there is going to be more move(s) coming before the season starts. You can't assume literally any of those things. I wouldn't call any of those things greater than a 50/50 chance of happening. Payroll simply is what it is, until it changes. Right now, it's $123M. I run my own numbers with estimates and I have us right around $120M personally, but nowhere close to the $104M.
  13. Is there any chance pina could be on the move with this signing?
  14. These guys aren't even remotely close to similar value. Would be like having the best secondary piece being from a list including Josh Hader, Corey Ray, Jacob Gatewood, Oliver Drake, and Jeff Suppan
  15. That's about where I'm at. I imagine we'd have to pay a premium for MB's name/pedigree/postseason experience...but that premium isn't vaulting up toward Peralta/Woodruff.
  16. I hope you are right... If things break right, we could see a rotation of Peralta, Woodruff, Burnes and Brown in just a couple of years. I'm not as confident about this as I am regarding Realmuto not landing an elite prospect. That's a hill I'm willing to die on. MB is a bit tricky because of his postseason pedigree and name value. I noticed that JosephC had Ray as more valuable than both Woodruff and Peralta, I completely disagree with those valuations...both pitchers should probably be multiple steps ahead of Ray. If other teams hold those 3 values similar...we should trade Ray immediately.
  17. I really wouldn't mind this. Having Shaw/Perez in a bit of a 2b platoon with Shaw getting some work at 1b as well. Eventually Hiura/Dubon will come up and Perez will most likely be left out. We have a lot of options this way. I would hope the offer is very team friendly though. In September and the postseason, I felt really good about our team against RHP with Yelich/Shaw/Moose. It was against LHP that we didn't match up well...and that was primarily Schoop and Aguilar's fault as they were expected to mash lefties. I think Hiura will be better than Schoop was for us last year starting with his very first game in the big leagues.
  18. I frankly can't see Stearns giving one of them up. We'll see if I'm wrong, I don't think MB warrants that caliber of return.
  19. Davies would probably be a better fit than Anderson I'll agree. A guy like Anderson is more exclusively a flip candidate immediately, or for a team that could contend in 2021 or possibly 2020. The Marlins somewhat fit this with all the talent they have in the upper minors, but the Giants really don't. The Giants are in for a longer rebuild most likely, depending how much $ they use to speed the process.
  20. Putting myself in their shoes and there is no way I am taking that deal. An astute GM knows they are not competing in the next 2 seasons and I want players that will be making their debut and contributing when that window opens again. Anderson/Davies and Perez do nothing for that window and Supak is too much of an unknown for me to accept that for Bumgarner. I understand Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta is likely not realistic and if I am dead set on a SP, I require Brown and want Erceg and Supak to round out the deal. There are arguments for not wanting Davies/Anderson...but those guys not fitting your window is not a good one. Too many think in terms of these dream scenarios where 17 minor leaguers are all hitting the majors at once. It doesn't work that way. You want to incrementally build yourself into a contender. With these guys, if you truly don't think you'll be good until these pitchers are long gone...they can still be flipped for prospects if they pitch well. Heck with 3 years of team control, you could get peak value if they have a good first half in either of their first 2 season by trading at the deadline. An astute GM doesn't look through such a narrow lense when it comes to team building.
  21. Starting high is all well and good, but it has to be a reasonable starting point or it's just dumb. I doubt the Brewers put Keon on the market asking for Vlad+ or similar value. This starting point isn't AS dumb as that starting point would have been, but I think you see my point. Asking Peralta for MB is not realistic even as a starting point.
  22. We really shouldn't be optioning guys to the minors that are making over 2 million bucks. If the Brewers don't think Davies is making the team, we should find a trade partner and ditch the salary or cut him before opening day and save 3/4 of his salary. I'll add that bringing in both Miley and MB would mean Davies and 1 other arm in the minors/out of the org. I would expect that we have at most 1 more pitching addition and that would likely result in Peralta being the 1st man out if everyone made it through ST healthy.
  23. Someone should tell these guys that drugs are bad for you...
  24. I feel pretty good about the Packers next year as well. It seems like we have good young talent at most positions, but I do have concerns on the o-line. Bulaga is the obvious concern, but we also don't have much depth behind the top 5. I felt like the defense took a big step forward, I think the offensive struggles made the defense work harder than they shoudl have. If we could sustain drives better this year, our defense could have been very good. Also all the injuries didn't help anything. I'm actually expecting those young receivers to take a step forward next year, especially MVS. Hopefully he spends the offseason working out with Davante and/or Rodgers. We could certainly use a veteran guy, but if not I think we'll do just fine at WR. I'm sure the new coach will help here as well.
  25. I really wanted mcdaniels, and im a bit concerned about his struggles in Tennessee. Besides those 2 factors, I'm good with the hiring. I'll defer to you guys as i don't follow football as close as baseball
