  1. Yelich is actually 9 months younger than Realmuto, and I'm sure he was referring to at the time of the trade...which means Yelich was 1 year and 9 months younger at his time of trade than Realmuto will be at his likely time of trade. I guess you can call him wrong over 3 months if you want, but he was mostly right on the 2 year comment. Also catchers get hurt far more and don't play as many games as outfielders, hence why you see so outfielders getting a ton of big contracts while catchers are signed to smaller deals. Outside of Posey, the biggest catcher contract I can think of is Russell Martin's 5/82. There are a ton of outfielders signed to over $100 million deals. I don't think the catcher position being a premium position is going to get the value you are anticipating.
  2. I wouldn't underestimate the impact DJ could have on their staff. Look what he did with our staff. They have some high profile arms that have greatly underperformed on that MLB roster...guys that when coming through their system looked like TOR arms. Honestly, I'm a bit puzzled that they would look to do anything at all on offense. Assuming Senzel can play a legit CF, they'll be basically set. Grab a RH depth OF for cheap like Austin Jackson or Rajai Davis, maybe add a utility guy that can play SS in FA...then use the rest of their resources on pitching. Realmuto certainly moves the needle a bit and is a clear upgrade, but Barnhart overall is a fringe top 10 catcher in baseball on a dirt cheap contract. I'm not sure losing Trammell is worth the modest upgrade.
  3. I agree it's a good fit for the Rays and a good contract for both sides. I'm ok with not going for that contract for the Brewers. That would probably be the end of us making payroll adding moves this winter, we have other holes to fill.
  4. If the Reds are trading Trammell for Realmuto, I highly highly doubt it'd be much more than 1 for 1. Even that seems unlikely to me unless they don't have a lot of confidence in his bat. I would guess then that Barnhart would be on the move in a package for an Indians starter. That set of moves would make a lot of sense for all 3 teams, aside from Trammell generally being an overpay for Realmuto.
  5. Trading for Realmuto likely means moving on from Barnhart, and I don't really know why they'd want to do that. Barnhart is super solid and signed for a very team friendly contract for the next 3 years with a 2022 option. If the Reds did get Realmuto, heck I'd be interested in Barnhart for the Brewers. All that said, the Reds would be wise to make some moves and look to win now...even with how good the division is. DJ should help their young pitching, they have one of the best offenses in baseball already(not to mention Senzel will hit the majors in 2019), and they have some payroll to work with along with Homer Bailey falling off the books next year. If the Reds land Kluber or Bauer and another solid bullpen arm, I would probably be more concerned about them than the Cubs or Cards.
  6. If Tampa Bay moved to Portland, that would make AL travel schedules much easier. Cleveland would probably shift to the east and the rangers to the central. Of course, that would all have a wrench thrown in if there's an expansion to 32 teams.
  7. I don't expect them to bump it too significantly. I just said I think they can. It's still a business, they aren't trying to break even. I wouldn't doubt if they had $50-60 million at the bottom of their income statement in 2016...their low payroll year. I'm anticipating something like $110-120 opening day payroll with flexibility to go to maybe $125 or $130...those are the numbers I expect Stearns is working with.
  8. Do you all really think that banks wouldn't be lining up for the chance to borrow money to the Brewers? Every bank knows the Brewers have tripled in value, and would see the minimal risk in borrow us money if needed. Cash flow is certainly not an issue for this team. The Brewers franchise has probably made a ton of money the last 3-4 years as we've had generally lower payrolls, or in 2018 we had higher payrolls but made the playoffs and had sky-high attendance. All while tv revenues are increasing and we have a new tv deal on the horizon(after this season). I imagine the Brewers are in fantastic financial shape and could easily push payroll higher.
  9. Looks like this got retracted. Deal is apparently close but not yet agreed to.
  10. Another arm off the board, things could get interesting in the SP market.
  11. With Ramos, don't forget he's one of the worst defenders at his position in the league.
  12. I'm a bit surprised more hasn't happened for the Brewers, or really any teams to this point. Already about halfway through the winter meetings. Many GM's leave on Thursday, so it's really a 3 day thing.
  13. I love trolling fan forums of other teams. Some guy on one of these 3 teams boards offered this 3 team deal NYY - Thor NYM - Realmuto + NYY pitching prospect + rojas MIA - Andujar + Rosario Anyone venture to guess which board this came from? The best part, it's taken generally seriously by most on the board...as if it's a good offer.
  14. Not that we would be interested, but do you think David Price has surplus value? Do you think a team like the Phillies would trade for him, if it was minimal player value and they took his entire contract?
  15. Their defense is superb at every position except 1b and 3b. Escobar and Merrifield are easy plus defenders, and their OF defense might be the best in baseball aside from maybe the Red Sox. Also Perez is good behind the plate. They are certainly giving their pitchers every chance to put up low run totals. They have a ton of speed to work with as well, if they ever get on base.
  16. The value of this investment has more than tripled for MA. He can go to 150M overnight if he chooses to. I can absolutely see them spending plenty of money over the next 2-3yrs as they have a legitimate chance of winning the WS I don't want to derail this thread, and I don't mean this to come across as me singling you out because it's not just you, but I figuratively slam my head against the wall whenever I see the assumption that because the franchise has increased in value, that MA must have a ton of liquid cash available to inject into player payroll. It doesn't work that way. He would have to realize that asset appreciation by selling off ownership shares (which is what the Steinbrenners have to keep doing - all of their personal wealth is basically the Yankees franchise). Payroll is always going to be limited by the revenues generated, not the value of the net assets. Revenues were able to support payrolls near $110 million in 2014/15. With revenues increasing as they have, $150M is not unrealistic. Especially considering how low 2016 and 2017 payrolls were. I'm not advocating for kimbrel, he is likely not the best use of our assets. Just saying this whole $110M max payroll thing is a bit silly in my opinion. I think we can easily blow past that.
  17. I don't think anybody should get their hopes up on Kimbrel. I can't imagine we'd use our resources on him above other options.
  18. Agreed with Bill Hall. And again, I can't stress enough how much their division situation is begging them to buy and try to contend.
  19. With how bad that division is, it completely makes sense for the White Sox to try ramping up. The Royals and Tigers won't be good anytime soon, adding Harper or MM to go with some of their young prospects and Abreu. They could contend in that division with 2 or 3 win-now moves.
  20. I'm starting to think too many teams are in on Kluber/Bauer...the return is going to price them out of Milwaukee. I feel like I've seen at least 8-10 teams have inquired on those guys.
  21. The "Chris Archer to Brewers" talk never really dies, it just fades into the background LOL LOL, I wasn't referring to Archer. I doubt we'd do a deal within the division anyways, moreso that they might sell off other pieces to other teams. If I was going to target anyone on the Pirates, it would be Adam Frazier.
  22. I think that's been pretty significantly refuted by multiple posters.
  23. This tells me 2 things. The White Sox are likely to ramp up and try to contend quickly. This makes sense given Jimenez is about to break through to the majors. Also, the Pirates probably see their situation in the NL Central and may try selling off some additional pieces.
