  1. I would probably require something like a 20-12 vote to overturn to meet the "clear and obvious" standard, but other than that, I think this would be a major upgrade from the current system. Which is sad. It's still better. What would also be better is on the closest plays, literally draw out of a hat. Dumb luck would be right more often than these doofus officials on the closest plays.
  2. I was one that generally agreed it wouldn't be a bad idea to use Hader early. The idea would be start with your very best and go from there. If after Woodruff's 4 innings, we get good Hader and he can pitch 2+ clean innings and is striking out everybody...heck you can probably save Lyles for game 1 of the NLDS. If you get bad Hader like we saw yesterday, you can have a quicker hook and adapt as there are plenty of options. I personally was so frustrated we didn't have a quicker hook for Hader. He had too many extremely bad pitches. He was basically a 1 pitch pitcher as the entire stadium knew he couldn't get his slider anywhere near the zone. In an August game, sure leave Hader in and if he blows it...he blows it. In a 1 and done...if the guy isn't sharp, next man up. This team's strength is in it's numbers, we have a lot of quality arms that can have really good days. For all we know, CC could have put in Freddy to face Rendon and we get good Freddy...who strikes out 4 in a row for the W. In the playoffs, you need to be much more Joe Maddon/Bruce Bochy than what CC has been. Identify if a guy isn't sharp and quick hooks. Can't be married to any one guy, and being efficient simply doesn't matter in said situation. We had 6 guys left in the pen and 4 outs to get
  3. they did regularly before September. The short term memory here is amazing. I haven't spent a ton of time, but let me guess...everyone is saying that Hader sucks right? He had one critical bad outing which completely negates his 2.62 ERA and 0.806 WHIP.
  4. Nobody should be sleeping on Burnes. He certainly won't be locked into a rotation spot or anything, but the arm is electric. Something was wonky with him this year, but I'd be shocked if him/the brewers didn't figure it out and get him back to being an effective arm again.
  5. It's real easy to be a monday morning QB, but I'll add my thought to the mix on bullpen usage. I was hesitant to send Woodruff out for a 4th, I could have understand for 1 batter as it was a RH hitter and see what happens...but have a lefty ready. Woodruff looked sharp in the 4th so obviously let him finish. I would have pulled Suter for a RH reliever during his inning at some point. After Suter's inning, I would have gone to Lyles for 1-3 innings depending how he looked with the plan to let Pomeranz pitch 1 and Hader pitch 1. As played, considering Pomeranz looked so devastating, I think you have to let him keep pitching. He was a starter and pitched at least 1 stint of 3 innings for us. Could have left him in with Hader needing to only pitch 1. With how Hader has looked lately, I didn't think counting on him for multiple innings was wise. As played, I think Hader needed to be pulled with Rendon coming up. Go to a RH reliever like Jackson/Peralta/Guerra...I would lean towards Peralta. Then have Lyles come out in the 9th. I think his only truly BAD move was leaving Hader out too long. The others I referenced were moreso doing stuff a bit differently than I would have...but not bad by any stretch.
  6. He looks really good... 6 outs is 6 outs. We've got other guys that can pitch, whatever it takes to get through clean innings
  7. I actually think Grandal has been pretty solid throwing this season. It's passed balls that have sort of been an issue. 27% CS...though he has one of the worst pop times and weakest arms behind the plate in the league. His CS success is likely due to more fringey guys taking chances on him...and accuracy. I feel like every BB/single by Turner is basically a triple in due time. Same with Taylor if he gets in the game.
  8. As much as I've harped on the Brewers needing to run today, Grandal behind the plate against this team is a bit nerve-wracking. They could run like crazy on him.
  9. Nats have a lot they can do to get favorable matchups. Can PH Adams for Kendrick or Cabrera as both can play 2b. Taylor can PH for Eaton/Soto if they choose, Parra can PH for Robles. Any of these guys can PH for Suzuki and simply put in Gomes late for defense. Taylor probably acts as their late inning pinch runner...as Dozier/Zimmerman can easily PH for the pitcher spot if we have a lefty in the game(Suter/Hader/Pomeranz).
  10. Nats lineup Trea Turner – SS Adam Eaton – RF Anthony Rendon – 3B Juan Soto – LF Howie Kendrick – 1B Asdrubal Cabrera – 2B Kurt Suzuki – C Victor Robles – CF Max Scherzer – RHP
  11. https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-com-experts-make-2019-postseason-predictions Somebody go post this in the clubhouse. Get the "Nobody believes in us" mojo going...
  12. Yes, but will he be able to play tonight? They certainly wouldn't put him on the wildcard roster if they didn't think there was a strong chance he could play. They can submit a new roster for NLDS if they win today.
  13. Also reminder that Suzuki is catching and he's not a very good thrower from behind the plate. Hiura/Grisham should for sure be looking to steal. Cain if he's up for it. Braun/Thames/Arcia maybe if they can get the right jump or Suzuki is struggling with his throwing at all.
  14. I don't hate it, I doubt it happens but I wouldn't hate that. Every out is critical and you want your best pitching while the game matters...I'm sure that's your thought. I think you still want a nail driver to close it out, I guess in your scenario that's probably Pomeranz. That curve would probably be really tough on guys trying to hit a HR if down by 1 in the 9th...tough to wait back on.
  15. What? If he looks awful he will most definitely get pulled. It's not like they need him to 6. They are trying to win one game just like us. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like it would be very difficult for a manager to pull someone like Max Scherzer in the 3rd inning if he's in a 2 on 2 out situation and already allowed a couple runs. It of course is probably smart, but I'm just not sure they'd make that move. I could of course be wrong, but I feel like that would be a reeeeeeeeally tough move to explain later. Especially if whatever reliever he picked allowed the next guy to hit a HR or something(I assume Strasburg wouldn't come in in the middle of an inning...probably use a matchup reliever to get the out and let Stras start the 4th).
  16. How are the Nationals any more built for this game than we are? We have been bullpenning to great success both this September & last September & last postseason, it is nothing new to our team, just another game. The Nats bullpen is so horrendous they are probably going to throw two starters in unfamiliar roles to try & compensate, pretty out of the ordinary for them. Not to mention their "ace", hasn't been very ace-y of late. One way I choose to optimistically look at the Nats pitching situation...they are pretty much going to live and die by how Scherzer looks tonight. If Woodruff isn't sharp, quick hook and in comes someone else...probably before big run totals get posted. If Scherzer allows 2 or 3 runs in the first couple innings, there's just no way they pull him. While Scherzer is certainly capable of flipping the switch at any moment and being a superstar, I like that he's been struggling lately. Provides a bit more hope. So if Scherzer isn't sharp tonight, it will probably be 4-5 runs before that Nats do anything. By then it would probably be too late.
  17. It's definitely adventageous that Suter/Lyles have plenty of relief experience. Sometimes you don't know what to expect when throwing a starter in the game in relief, but both guys have a ton of experience doing that. It should be seamless. I know our odds aren't ideal but I'm still very hopeful.
  18. Every so often, Shaw connects and really mashes one. He also still has a good eye at the plate and can take a walk off a pitcher that can't throw strikes. Better than Perez who goes up there, swings at the first 3 pitches no matter what, and goes and sits on the bench.
  19. Woodruff will probably bat once considering we hit first and his PA would likely be 2nd or 3rd inning...I guess if it's the 3rd maybe he doesn't bat. I wouldn't be overly surprised if he hit 8th today. I'm imagining something like Woodruff for 3ish, Suter for 2, Lyles for 2-3, then Pomeranz/Hader to finish it. That's the dream anyway. I would think Jackson/Claudio will pitch to 1-2 hitters if any of the 3 main guys struggles completing an inning.
  20. He factors in that way as well, but I'm thinking his primary use will be as a pinch runner. We might see him come in for defense late if we are ahead as well, or if Braun/Cain get hurt. I would think an early injury would put Gamel in the game ahead of Taylor.
