  1. I'm overall fine with this. Good for him definitely, and we were never meeting that price.
  2. I would also have no problem with him on a minor league deal with a major league invite. I could say the same about probably 100 other players though, minor league deals are virtually zero risk aside from the opportunity cost...as you can only have so many guys at ST so you want to take the best gambles with those guys. I think there's some upside in the bat though, work a flier.
  3. Oh interesting, another poster that doesn't realize the Brewers are on a budget and can't spend infinite money... Why would you waste time with Wheeler when Cole and Strasburg are available?
  4. Giving a 4 year deal to Wheeler(which he'll probably command) is probably like giving a 3 year deal to Brandon Morrow. We all saw how that turned out, and Morrow was a reliever. It's even that much more risky for Wheeler.
  5. Maybe his stuff simply regressed. Hard to say. Maybe they have big plans for those other 40 man spots. There's still time to protect one or two more players.
  6. Game plan here should probably be virtually identical to the Panthers game. Stack the box, make the WR beat you. The WR have speed but not overly talented. Name of the game is stopping the run game and Kittle. Offensively, probably try to run the ball and use misdirection. Screens, reverses, quick passes to wr, etc. Don't take 7 step drops all day and let Bosa wreck the game.
  7. Rivers throws too many wobblers at this point in his career. He does still make a lot of good throws, but I'm not sure he can throw a good deep ball more than 50% of the time. And the other 50% are wobblers that fall 10 yards short of his target and get intercepted most of the time. He's basically a less effective and slower version of Chad Pennington at this point in his career.
  8. That's surprising that Fox would be the network to go for this type of show. Unless the point is to mock the kids that say "Ok boomer".
  9. Has anything changed from the Royals public stance that Merrifield is virtually unattainable? Last I heard, they wanted to be completely blown away...otherwise they wanted to keep him.
  10. Yeah we're not going to agree, and that's fine. Maybe they aren't giving up 30 a game, but probably at least 20 to most of the teams we faced(which is roughly what the packers did as well)...and they'd probably be worse than 8-2 unless they got the same extremely generous calls that we got.
  11. The 49ers have had a couple key injuries that have made their defense look increasingly beatable. 25, 27, and 26 points allowed the last 3 games. I guess it's possible the Cardinals for whatever reason have their number. I think we need to make a point to establish the run. We probably want to play with 2 TE a lot this week.
  12. I actually disagree heavily with this. Look at the teams they've faced. Name one besides the Ravens that has a remotely scary offense? 6 of their opponents(7 games, jets twice) are in the bottom 10 teams in yards/game...the 2 others besides Baltimore are 11th and 13th from the bottom. Looking at their schedule, I literally couldn't have devised an easier schedule up until the last 2 weeks. It was cupcake after cupcake. To their credit, they still did destroy those cupcake teams for the most part...but nothing about their team is elite, not even the defense. I was telling a buddy before the Baltimore game...every one of their next 5 opponents are basically tossups. Could go either way, and the Patriots are not definitively better than any of them.
  13. I agree it's probably unlikely, but you can't exactly rule out a guy with that much arm talent...that had an awful year for unexplainable reasons. For years, guys with his stuff have gotten away with being effectively wild in the zone. Yet all of a sudden Burnes is getting hammered left and right. My guess is he goes into the offseason planning to add some movement to his heater, deception to his delivery, improve his curve or change...he'll do at least one thing to improve.
  14. Arcia becoming an all-star hitter on your watch is the type of thing that helps you become the hitting coach for the Dodgers/Red Sox/Yankees for quadruple the pay. It's also the type of thing that leads to a Brewers world series. If Arcia as your number 8 hitter is posting a 775-800 OPS, man Stearns would have to really bungle the offseason for that team to not win it all.
  15. I think this was fairly close too, but I fully expected Bellinger to get MVP. They were close offensively(Yelich slightly better), but Bellinger is so much better a defender than Yelich. Missing time hurt Yelich as well. I think the race becomes a push if Yelich doesn't miss time and rakes those last 18 games. There's enough there that it makes sense to me for Bellinger to get it. That said, baseball writers are quite idiots. I have no idea how Verlander got the Cy Young over Cole. It's frankly laughable. I feel like they backed into the right answer picking Bellinger over Yelich.
  16. You can add in that Smith was going to take the QO if he didn't get a better offer, so 3 of 10 would have taken. Cole, Donaldson, Rendon, and Strasburg will shatter the QO mark on at least 4 year deals each. MadBum and Wheeler probably get $50-70 million deals. I'm wondering to myself about Ozuna, he probably should have taken the QO. I feel like he's the guy that might not get great offers and end up signing after the draft...or generally get a crappy offers and take less than the QO.
  17. Agreed completely. Abreu especially would never do better than the QO. Odorizzi maybe, but he's also one more solid year away from probably a 3 year deal next year with no QO attached...and he'd definitely never get a multi-year deal with a higher AAV of $17.8m.
  18. Correcting my note above, the Braves I don't think will actually lose a pick. They'll get a comp pick from Donaldson for rejecting the QO. I think that whole thing ends up being a wash, but I certainly could be wrong and if so feel free to correct me.
  19. I think Pomeranz falls into the $8m per vs the $10+m per, though I think 3/24 is possible for him. Overall that's a good deal for Smith, good for him. I wonder also if the Braves will be inclined to sign another QO player now that they've signed one. The next pick they give up is a 4th rounder...that much less valuable than a 3rd.
  20. I was going to say. $68 for a bobble seems steep, but if you get 1 or 2 high demand games...you can probably get a good chunk of your money back. One Saturday Cubs game or Sunday game with a good giveaway probably gets you halfway to breakeven.
  21. https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/02/20/mlb-to-crack-down-on-sign-stealing/ Here's a link to more information on the measures in place to prevent sign stealing for the 2019 season. The league official referred to has access to everything clubhouse/dugout and would report major violations in real time. Something as simple as being on a personal cell phone was a violation and would get reported, which went for everyone in the dugout/clubhouse area including players, managers, and video personnel. I highly highly doubt any sign stealing happened in 2019 using electronic means...nothing like the 2017 allegations. I find it interesting this is coming out now regarding 2017...considering at this point cheating via electronics is very difficult if not impossible.
  22. I wouldn't mind Pence as 4th/5th OF. He really only makes sense if Braun moves to 1b though and if he's inexpensive. I get the sense plenty of other teams could use him in a similar role though...and I would think he'd be inclined to pick a different spot, possibly one with a DH option available.
  23. I find this to be a fun offseason, in that there are so many things we can do...with quite a bit of payroll/roster flexibility to get them done. There are obvious areas to address and potential rule changes that will factor into roster building...having the flexibility is nice. We are in a much better position than quite a few teams this offseason in our ability to make moves.
  24. Last year was feast or famine on the FA market. Harper/MM got $30+ per, Corbin got $22 I think, a few guys got in the $14-17 range and everyone else was $12 or less. I think we see quite a few more guys fall into the 20s this year(as many as 10 could get there) with only Cole going over 30. I know there's big talk about Rendon, but I simply don't believe he's in the 30+ tier.
